In episode 2 of our gundog puppy training series on Shooting & Country TV, trainer Andy Brown of Cotswold Gundogs is showing us how to train a dog to hunt, and demonstrating the different methods used to teach the hunting pattern to both spaniels and Labradors.
Training a gundog to hunt is essential in aiding them to find and pick-up shot game on shoot days, and for seeking out and flushing game when beating or rough shooting. Andy explains how to break the exercise down into three stages, starting with turning the dog on the whistle, before building on that skill to widen the hunting pattern and cover more ground, all the while maintaining that essential element of control.
If you have a young gundog that you wish to train up to work actively as a picker-up or in the beating line on game days, or rough shoots, then you are in the right place - Andy has a strong focus on building a great working relationship between dog and handler, and making training fun.

Interesting video, some similarities to how teach a spaniel to hunt, but some very different excersise. The dummy technique seemed to have the head up following its eyes rather than getting it's nose on the floor. I appreciate it's a puppy but I'd still be looking for that nose down hunting. I'm looking to shoot over and do a few completions with mine so maybe I'm looking for something different, I only do limited beating. I rarely combine hunting and retrieving in the earlier stages after being advised by S Dixon not to. Be interesting to hear your comments to the trainee, she seemed very aggressive (loud stern not physically aggressive) in her handling, loud on the stop, tones very sharp, limited praise, and barking at the dog on a failed recall. Quiet calm handling is not something everyone finds easy but it's what people should be aiming for. This seems quite a critical comment, which isn't really my aim, all gundog content is appreciated, this is more conversational suggestion of a different view and works better with a beer and a chat. Everyone trains to suit their needs and circumstances and take bits from everywhere, look forward to watching the next video.

Thanks for your comment Peter, we always welcome open discussions :) Like you say, the sort you'd have over a beer! The next video shows how the pups have developed in their training with a "triangle" exercise, incorporating heel work, sit and stay, retrieving, and the back retrieve... it also shows the exercises demonstrated by some more established dogs so the viewers can see the end result we are aiming for. Hope you enjoy it, it's coming in the next week or so. Thanks for watching!
