Great clip, I noticed a tiny, weeny bit of remains left of Clyburn platform and it was sad to see some of the heavy rail line has been lifted near Clyde which serviced the old Carlingford branch.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
As for Clyburn, it was only ever and employees platform and I think the various work places adjacent to it eventually were removed so the need for the station disappeared. As for the disconnection of the Carlingford line, that was to remove the need for the diamond crossing there. I think the point work remains but it will go sooner or later. The last I heard track still existed and connected as far as Parramatta Road and was being used for the storage of track maintenance machines.

@@tressteleg1 I was fully aware that it was strictly a railway employees station / platform only but I can certainly remember passing by it on the train (back when it was there and in use) many years ago.

I did in fact get off there, semi-legally as I was visiting the late Arthur Perry who was working in a railways automatic telephone exchange there. I guess a certain number of Trains regularly stopped there anyway.

Great video thanks Mate. The first half till Lidcombe particularly interesting as it is not a well trod path for us commuters.

Yes, I knew nothing about that underpass all those various tracks around the back of Flemington. Certainly a great revelation.
@richardsmith8654

It certainly was. I do hope that one day somebody organises a freight line tour again.. Never managed to go one. That would be educational.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
The problem for HET is that some freight lines have been de-electrified, such as those which parallel the Bankstown line for a while. Silly decision to scrap the electric locos but I suspect that the privatised freight operators could not be bothered changing between electric and diesel at the end of the wires Newcastle and Lithgow.
@richardsmith8654
@richardsmith8654 Год назад
@@tressteleg1 Just do a rail motor tour of the freight lines then. That would be great. I agree with you on the electric loco saga for Sydney. Still think that this was a major mistake. Particularly at Newcastle. However I am the first to admit I don't have sufficien tinformation to model the numbers effectively to prove my hunch. Was never quite clear why some freight lines in NSW are not electrified if only to provide redundancy for the total network..
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
Don’t think I hadn’t considered a rail motor tour of the freight lines. I have some photographs I took on such a tour many years ago. The only problem in this case is that HET is an electric train society so doesn’t own any rail motors. That society is at Patterson. It certainly is a stupid idea to run diesel locomotives for many km under electric wires, but QR is no better. They had some general-purpose electric locomotives, the 3900 type but these were pinched by the coal lines many years ago and never given back when they got more electric logos for those lines. And we’re talking many hundreds of kilometres of diesel under wires.

most interesting on the dive tunnel from North Strathfield and seems lots of back tracks up to Lidcombe, didn't know there is another pair of tracks like that. Is it used for other regular purpose? I got that there are some tracks to Olympic park from main pairs from Central. Is that part of the goods line? Also Flemington/Clyde seems to be a big yard for train maintenance.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
I don’t expect that any passenger services normally go this way, but maybe empty car movements to Flemington sheds or more likely freight heading from the north to the west or maybe even in that opposite direction.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
I should have mentioned that there may be specials from the northern lines to Olympic Park but not living in Sydney I’m not terribly familiar with it. Also in my Ropes Creek video you will see that the curve used to be double track from North Strathfield towards Homebush.

@@tressteleg1 i thought it was double track around that curve years ago when i was a kid and i remember catching a train to olympic park from hornsby years ago to go to the easter show the train went to strathfield then reversed direction to head out to olympic park
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
This is the link which will show you what that curve was like in 1986. From memory you will see it in the first few minutes. As for your Easter show train reversing at Strathfield, this may have been to pick up extra people from there, also it’s possible that at that time for any reason the tracks may have been considered unfit for passenger trains, a situation which sometimes exists on freight - only lines. Another great clip. Especially around the Homebush curve, which if my memory serves me right was used some years ago by a Gosford - Parramatta 2 car V set in the morning, and an afternoon return🤔 And interesting too is comparing this video to your Ropes Creek line one from 7 years ago around Homebush and the track rationalisation now. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HQC2A-faLpA.html 👍🏻👍🏻
@tressteleg1

Yes I checked it yesterday and refreshed my memory that the curve used to be double track. Possibly there once was a Gosford to Parramatta service but not living in Sydney I would not know.

The NS dive always felt like you were in Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars X-Wing trying to bomb the death star.... Another great vid, shows how much Syd has changed, used to work freight trains as a guard out of Clyde to Lithgow & Goulburn. Not sure if you mentioned it but the signals that are staggered top to bottom are automatic signals and can be passed at stop in certain circumstances, and the straight up & down signals are signaller / system operated and cannot be passed at stop without the authority of the signaller, at least that was the way it was in the 80's.

A very great video just waiting for part 2. Now I know what the dive and tunnel are like at North Straithfield. I go past the dive every time I get a train from West Ryde to Straithfield. How do I get to go on a trip like this?
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
Part 2 and more have not even been looked at yet, let alone processed. I should have said that the tour was run by HET (Historic Electric Traction.) Most on board were society members. Check out their website. Membership is not that expensive and you will hear of every tour, many for members only.

@@tressteleg1 There were other places mentioned in the video like Schofields and Hornsby. These were the destinations that I was referring to as being in Part 2. That for elaborating on which organisation was running the tour.

I have not even looked at the rest of the video, but the tour did occupy much of the day so there could be 4 more parts before we finish. From memory Schofields and into Hornsby car sheds (outside) were reached before going back to Strathfield.

@tressteleg1 Год назад
Well there was a small number of girls/ladies on this tour. I don’t know your situation, but if you ever would like to be part of the ‘boy’s club’ and be accepted as such, if you are in Sydney and have time to spare on occasional Wednesdays or Sundays, you could join HET and help out at Redfern. There are plenty of jobs to do restoring vintage electric trains, some jobs messy, others somewhat cleaner. In due course I will be presenting a video of a typical day at Redfern and there was at least one lady active there.

All the nattering was a distraction. Are they even taking in the trip? Felt more like the local pub than a special tour.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
Unfortunately it’s hard to shut them up. In fact, there was not a large number of people on the tour, just spread around and talking loudly. In a few places where the talking was very noisy, I did substitute better sounds from elsewhere on that part of the journey.
@jamesfrench7299
@jamesfrench7299 Год назад
@@tressteleg1 I only want to hear the traction sounds as the air con in the Ks drowns it out in the passenger compartment. This time we have endless talk. Occasional musings or remarks are fine to me, but many people can't go through life with any length of silence with others around for fear of being 'boring'. Good video though.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 Год назад
I also wish that they weren’t there yabbering, but you can’t tell people to piss off and shut up unfortunately. Hopefully other legs of the journey will have less vocal interference.
