Hey tressteleg1 what state are you from? I live in Sydney NSW and I am only commenting on my observations of the video that you posted. I still think that the Victorian government could look at this line and futureproof it. They could duplicate the line where possible by that I mean not removing any trees. The butterflies rely on a species of eucalyptus trees according to Wikipedia. Why don't they just grow more of these trees in a nursery and them plant them out. Thd only other thing that I noticed is the amount of trees that are close to the line bushfire hazard.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 23 часа назад
@@frankbanner8572 I grew up in Sydney when the real trams were running, was a Melbourne tram driver 1988 - 94 and now live on the Gold Coast. A train driver provides the video material. As for this line, I suspect that especially the outer areas of this line has sparse population (not many houses in what we see) so spending more money on the line is not going to win many votes. Any attempt to move or otherwise disturb the butterfly colony will be harshly resisted. Sure, start up a protected butterfly habitat, but don’t touch this colony. Knowing what NIMBYs are like, they would probably protest any attempts to move away any trees - and then complain when a bushfire destroys the railway.

@@kerrijohnstone7588 Unfortunately monorails are built and designed by particular companies and consequently are patented so nobody else can copy. The design might be adopted by a couple of cities here and there, and that’s about all. So with no new sales likely, the company loses interest in the project, stops making spare parts, and the operator is stuck with a line with no spare parts and no permission for anyone else to help out. That’s why they shut. That applied to both Sydney and the Gold Coast.

@tressteleg1 День назад
@@pgchase4578043026 it’s nice to hear that you enjoy your visits to Melbourne and elsewhere thanks to my videos. As for train speeds, Melbourne has always been a fairly leisurely jog along railway. Sydney where I grew up the trains used to be driven essentially as fast as they could go. Since then, a lot of running time has been added and I believe this is to help ensure getting good “on time” figures. Having so much time, it’s almost impossible to run late, but they still manage to do that sometimes.. Good for the politicians, not so good for the worn out public just wanting to get home from work.

@@frankbanner8572 I did read Wikipedia about these butterflies and it makes interesting reading. While captive breeding would be desirable, I don’t think anyone involved in the field under any circumstances would condone altering that colony from where and how it is now. If the present track layout out near the end limits a needed increase in train frequency, the double track could resume a short distance further out from the butterflies. Maybe the government just saw a good way to save some money. The old single track rail bridge is also protected against change. The Metro Rail Tunnel is a joke, and it's a complete travisty that trains on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines won't be going through South Yarra and Richmond, passengers that want to get off at South Yarra and Richmond will have to exchange trains at Caulfeild into an already crowded train from Frankston, that is not good for passengers that are elderly and or disabled. The Minister Of Transport and the PTV have to rethink and change their minds, and also what is going to happen with the Regional train service from Traralgon, I think that has been overlooked. Travelers on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines have put up so much with buses replacing trains due to the level crossing removal project, and put up with not being able to get off at South Yarra and Richmond because the pathetic tunnel route is just a total slap in the face.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 11 дней назад
@@sandrafowler6717 Agreed, especially with regard to the need to change trains at Caulfield, one of the most awkward stations to change platforms which requires touching off, leaving the station and then touching on again for the new platform. Unfortunately it’s much too late for a rethink on South Yarra. I’m not sure the tunnel even goes under that station so it’s not gonna be moved now. As for the regional train service, it will continue to be as it is - crawling along behind an all stations train as far as Pakenham. That’s the reason for the signals on that line turning themselves on and off according to which train is coming next. Those country trains need the signals showing, and they do, while the Metro Trains require no signal showing.

Why have a tram line alongside an operational train line?
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 13 дней назад
@@markaylott1780 For several reasons. If the tram ended where it reached the tram line, a new station would have to be built for people to transfer. Apparently it was little extra cost (above a new station) to run the trams parallel. The trains only run every 30 minutes which would not match a tram every 7.5 minutes which would leave people stranded as the major shopping centre and a number of bus routes are also passenger generators. Having a second station only a few km from another would delay the trains with no advantage.

They're exactly the same as the old fleet? Only difference must be the new smell inside

I did explain the differences internally on the video.

Thank you! Curious.about the announcement about Go Cards that ends with "and always travel with a valid ticket". Do you get/need a paper ticket even if you tap on with a card?
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 13 дней назад
@@peterelvery No. As paper tickets are also sold from the ticket vending machines, I think they’re using the word ticket to also include cards. You certainly don’t need both.

In order for the train to go the driver needs to unisolate the controls in one cab, with the cab active the train can now go, if switching ends the controls need to be isolated and then unisolated on the other end for the train to go the other direction, the trip leaver stops the train running a red signal by automatically engaging the brake, the dead man’s handle stops the train if the driver lets go or passes out?
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 13 дней назад
In essence, yes. The driver has to set the reverser to Off, and lock the controller and take his unlocking key to the other end. Things like head and tail lights must also be changed as well as the destinations.

I really liked how you showed how to do checks on brakes and you also answered my question of how to put up the pantographs. I know I am a bit late to ask this, but what is your opinion on the new Comeng Horn?

I think that it is most unfortunate that the last remaining examples of what had essentially been unique Melbourne whistles have been removed and replaced by rather mundane ordinary sounding whistles.
