In this series of videos we experience one of the iconic GM designed, NOHAB-built 6 axle diesel locomotives delivered in the 1960's. Tall and majestic, locomotive No. M61.019 with its distinctive round nose pulls our private charter train consisting of luxurious Swiss Schlierren coaches and dining cars out of Budapest's Keleti station towards Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake. The first part of our journey is along busy main lines shared with a multitude of freight and passenger trains, both national and international to Székesfehérvár after which the lines fan out serving different routes and destinations until our route is down to a single track with passing loops. The countryside beyond Székesfehérvár is relatively flat, prime agricultural land, dotted with attractive small towns and villages. Part 1 finishes at Csajág, Part 2 will take our train around Lake Balaton, passing numerous holiday resort towns established in the Soviet era.

I love Hungarian railways, there is so much variety with old trains sharing the tracks with the very latest trains, some on international services to faraway destinations and there is no better place to see the action than from the drivers cab. We owe the driver a big “thank you” for allowing us to share his view. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊.

Not have the money to go to Hungary again soon, but this takes me back to the trips with the English PTG organisation who did trips in and around Hungary from 2017 to 2019, using a lot of Nohabs. Nice to watch, thanks!

09:55 good bridge to watch trains at the biggest yard of Budapest 10:54 in the future a new station to interchange with tram and HEV downstairs, also 4 tracks than. Notice the long trams on the right! 18:04 on the right: THE spot to watch lot's of action. 18:32 line to the right to Györ and Vienna.

Hi, PTG put on some good trips. In today's economic climate it's getting harder to justify overseas rail tours and the participants are getting older. I'm making the most of travelling before I retire from work and such luxuries will be beyond my reach. I guess you noticed a few changes as a result of modernisation since you made your trips to the area. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Hello Hans, locomotives licenced and built to the same GM design can be found in the USA, Sweden and Australia today, the design and build quality must have been very good. 🍻🍺. Tim.

I'm biased .. I used to work for EMD. I love the sound of two-stroke medium speed diesel engines (567, 645, 710 series). Watching this video, listening to a smooth running diesel, while watching high voltage catenary pass by is bit ironic isn't it? Great video sir.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 Месяц назад
Hi, there is nothing wrong with being biased when it comes to the sound of a GM diesel locomotive. They must have been good locomotives because some of the streamliners still survive in every day service in Australia, they can also be found on heritage railways and special trains at a number of locations around the world. As this trip progresses we lose the catenary, I'll be posting Part 2 next weekend. It's nice to know you enjoyed the video.

There is a slight mistake in the video. The plate at 0:28 is from a remotorized Csörgő (Rattler), not from a NOHAB. Originally our M41 Rattlers were built with SEMT Pielstick engines, but some of them are remotorized with Cat engines. Actually, quite a few classic Csörgő have survived.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 Месяц назад
Gosh, you know your locomotives - commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hungarian-locomotive-m41-csorgo.jpg , I slipped up there. As we continued our journey around Lake Balanton the overhead catenary finished at Balatonfüred after which trains were diesel, mostly hauled by older locomotives such as 418 319. I must have used the soundtrack from one of our station stops where we passed other locomotive hauled trains.
@MrTazman
@MrTazman Месяц назад
@@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks! Yes, the 418.3xx series has Cat engines, but the 418.2xx and 418.1xx series has the original SEMT Pielstick V12. Sadly the 3xx series lost their characteristic rattling sound. I hope You had a wonderfull journey.

@@MrTazmanHi, thanks for the extra information, it will make editing the rest of the video more interesting as I will be listening out to see if I can recognise the engines fitted to the locomotives.

Hello Bod, rain seems to be the order of day, it's wet over here too. Hungary is a very underrated country, it's clean, scenic and full of beautiful old buildings. The people are friendly, the beer is nice and it isn't expensive. The railways are in good condition and new trains are being introduced, although it's the old ones I like 😊☔.

@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 Месяц назад
Most of the engine sound is original although I have replaced the sound in some places to avoid personal conversations between members of the locomotive crew being broadcast to the world. I hope you can appreciate and understand why it is necessary to respect the crew's privacy, they don’t always realise that the camera records sound as well as video.
