#AUSTRALIA #SAVANNAHLANDER
I will be posting another version of this trip in the next day or two using footage from a camera fixed to the outside of the train offering plenty of train noises with none of the onboard banter. Having spent a delightful night at the Cobbold Gorge Village our small group travelled by bus to Forsayth where the Savanahhlander train was waiting to take us to Mount Surprise our destination for the day. Our drivers/tour guides Will and Hamish loaded our luggage, gave us a safety talk and we were ready to set off to our morning coffee stop at Cafe Bloodwood.
In the commentary provided for our enjoyment, all references to the Gulflander are made with typical good humoured tongue in cheek Australian banter, if they didn't love the Gulflander guys, they wouldn't even mention them. Don't tell Will and Hamish but I'll let you in on a secret, the guys on the Gulflander do an excellent coffee/tea break. Please sit back and see how many kangaroos and wallabies you can spot in this video. There is no commentary in the middle part of this video because the train made so much noise climbing the first range it would have been inaudible and the inside camera also overheated and turned itself off.
I had travelled by train between Cairns and Kuranda on a previous visit to Queensland and was unaware that the railway line beyond Kuranda still operated or that it was possible to travel by train all the way to Forsayth. I had the pleasure of meeting Ian Welch whilst visiting Mainline Steam at Plimmerton, New Zealand where he showed me the progress being made on recently acquired ex KiwiRail Tranz Scenic railway carriages purchased to work with his impressive collection of stream and electric locomotives most of which once worked along the adjacent North Island Main Trunk Railway between Wellington and Auckland. Ian also mentioned that he had an interest in a company called “Cairns Kuranda Steam Railway”. After our meeting I looked up the company and this led me onto the Savannahlander. I'd have booked a trip there and then, but unfortunately the Covid pandemic made it all but impossible for me to visit either New Zealand or Australia for a couple of years, but the desire to ride the Savannahlander remained. With restrictions to New Zealand and Australia lifted I was free to start planning my Queensland rail adventure including the Ipswich Rail Museum, the Mary Valley Rattler, the Tilt Train, the Spirit of Queensland, the Gulflander and the Savannlander, before flying onto Wellington to continue my rail adventure in New Zealand.
Trans North Bus & Coach deposited myself along with the small group of people who were also doing the Gulflander and Savannahlander tour at Mount Surprise where the Savannalander train was waiting. Here we met the two guys who were to make this tour tour way more than just a train ride, with their Australian sense of humour, commentary and determination to make this a tour one we'd all remember for all the right reasons. William and Hamish, weren't just a couple of train driver's, they were baggage handlers, coffee makers, train cleaners, tour guides, to be honest they looked after our every need, nothing was too much trouble.
Having loaded a mountain of baggage we were given a short talk about train etiquette and the guys were requested to sit like girls on the toilet because the ride could get a bit lively at times and no ones aim was that good. With the diesel engines now purring gently under the carriage floor we were ready to set off on the next leg of our North Queensland adventure.
Here is a little information about the train, mostly courtesy of Wikipedia -
The service was introduced on 3 April 1995 by Queensland Rail to replace the Forsayth Mixed (marketed as the 'Last Great Train Ride'). The line was closed from Mareeba to Mount Surprise at the same time. It was initially run with a 2000 class railmotor set that was refurbished at Townsville Workshops. Initially this service only ran on the Mount Surprise to Forsayth section of the Etheridge line. However, after an upgrade of the line for sugar syrup trains from Cairns to Arriga, and a limited restoration of the rest of the line, the railmotor started travelling from Cairns to Forsayth in September 1998. In 2004 it was decided to put the running of the train out to tender and the winning bid was submitted by “Cairns Kuranda Steam Pty Ltd”.

Amazing, looking at the landscape you'd be forgiven for thinking that this is a disused railway line! It's easy to forget the men that laid out the track in the first place!

With just one small train a week in each direction 39 weeks a year, the rail surface is rusty and the tracks look disused. You are right to mention the men who built the railway, there were no roads back then, just rough dirt tracks, the railway was the first means of proper transportation for goods into and out of places it served. It must have been much easier to get lost in the outback than it was to survey the terrain and build a railway through it.

Wow Tim spent 6 weeks living in outback Queensland. Went from Toowoomba to Charleville and Thargomindah. Took in the Carnarvon Gorge all around central Queensland Blackall, Quilpie. Took a special 4WD track just after a huge rain event there was amazing. Will never forget the way the country just took off. Skippy's everywhere outback melons all over the place. Birds deafening me everytime I stopped. The lovely Major Mitchell's parrots are a beautiful sight. Hope to get back to Kiwi to see me Sis. Still remember seeing her house on one of your videos. All the best for this year take care Tim.

Hi, you've seen more of the area than I have, it is an amazing place with wonderful wildlife, it's not like anywhere else I've visited. I watched the Parrots strip a fruit tree, they really are vandals and so noisy, great to watch, not so good if you are the owner of the fruit tree. I hope you get to see your sister and all the best for 2024.

Hello Hans, overcrowding is definitely not a problem in the outback, it can be a days ride just to get a beer and by the time you get home, you've drunk the beer so you need to set off to but another one, never at home, always going to the nearest shop to buy a beer. Grave stone reads "died of thirst going to the shop to buy a beer”. Time for a few 🍺🍺🍺Cheers. Tim.

Hi, that sounds like the best way to enjoy train rides on RU-vid. I enjoyed the banter with regard to the Gulflander coffee breaks. I can assure that both mugs are awesome, although the Gulflander one was delivered with the kind of understatement you'd expect for a product that doesn't need to be oversold; they are both in front of me as I type this reply, reminding me of my wonderful Queensland adventure. Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, maybe I should run a Skippy counting competition. The Forsayth/Einasleigh road was one of the better roads, I travelled from Cairns to Normanton on the Great North bus and parts of the route were unpaved, not only that the road was shared with road trains and being kings of the road they don't stop for other traffic.

Hello Robert, I didn't get a notification for this comment, better late than never. North Queensland has so much to offer ranging from the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, the Tablelands and the ranges that have to be crossed to reach the interior. The Gulflander route was influenced by the discovery of gold, although it does seem strange that it was and has never been connected to the rest of the network. When it comes to gauges there are always the sugar cane railways to give our Neil something to think about, not to mention the fake tin hare on the Gulflander 😉.

Hello Anna, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've made some initial enquires to film one of South Africa’s trains, the response so far has been positive, if all goes to plan I'm hoping to visit South Africa this year. Australia is a big country, it would take a long time travel the whole continent by train, maybe better to do it in bite size chunks, I’d happily recommend Queensland as a good place to start, wonderful rail journeys at affordable prices. It was pretty hot at over 40C most days. I did find an answer to stop the camera used inside the train from overheating; I removed the battery from the camera and powered it from external power source instead. I wish I'd found the answer at the beginning of the trip rather than halfway through it.

I travelled on one of those rail motors to school in the 1970s in Brisbane, maybe even the same unit. They usually ran with three carriages then, but sometimes two. I still remember the sound of the diesels and the gear changes. What was the redline on those, 1500 rpm? ;) Thanks for the virtual tour. 👍🇦🇺
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 7 месяцев назад
I'm glad this video bought back fond memories from your child hood days in Brisbane. There is a third carriage available to be added to this train during busy periods with a flat end at both ends. These rail motors have been fitted with several different engines, I believe the one used in this video was powered by a modern Cummings engine, went built they were powered by either AEC or Rolls Royce engines. @@Timsvideochannel1 I didn't say they were fond memories haha. I think you had more fun than I ever did. I've never seen a tram in Brisbane, I didn't know there was once a tram network, my curiosity got the better of me - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trams_in_Brisbane Now I'm intrigued, I'll have to visit the tram museum on my next trip to Brisbane. I find it criminal how neglected our outer communities really are.....
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 7 месяцев назад
I spoke to people in those communities and didn't hear many complaints, they mostly pointed out that transporting goods to shops was expensive and ranges were limited as a result. There were shops specializing in telling the stories of the indigenous peoples as well as selling their products. They all loved the train and the Great North bus because they bought tourists to the towns. The railway runs at a loss, but the value to the communities served more than compensates for that loss. The outback is what it is and the tourist dollar can make a real difference, the best way to support the communities is to make sure that have access to medial care, help with setting up businesses, better transport links and tourists to stay in the hotels and spend their dollars in the shops and cafes.
