Both Part 1 & 2 Rails Through Heaven are very beautiful videos. Riding on the side of the hills and through the gorges absolutely stunning. The golden birch trees looked so lovely and bright however with the other birch trees all at their most profound in colour was beautiful to see.
Got to be one of the most beautiful rail lines in the world. Absolutely stunning! Too bad they are retiring this line, but I can see why. The roadbed and infrastructure looks as if it isn't heavy enough to support modern, high-speed freight. What are those little grassy areas by the side of the line? You see one at 9:57, on the right-hand side. These look to be perfect places to sit and enjoy some world-class train watching!
Chris Ackerley, thanks for your kind comments and notes about the beauty of this route. The small area with the seating benches (Trachina - old train stop) is situated on top of 319 steps connecting a church below with the railway line. In fact, in my latest video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_74waTGdLs4.html) you can see footage mostly taken of this area as well as the front overview of the spectacular Trachina Rail Pass!
There was some very beautiful scenery in this video. One thing I did notice was how they used bricks or hand cut stone to make the side along the tracks in various. From what I could see the tunnels had what looked like cut stone on the walls and over heads. I would say the people who built this rail way was some master stone cutters and workers. I would love to see a rail road built by those people today with the equipment we have now. I don’t think we have people who could build it today as they done it back them with the same equipment. (We don’t have the craftsmen to do it You say they are closing the rail way down. Why are they closing it? Just the view from the ride would be enough to keep it open for the tourists that might ride the train. Thank again for two very outstanding videos on this rail system.
Thanks John Moore!!!! Yes, the stone cuttings and bridges are astonishing. As one my friends said once, it looks like that the mountains built the stone bridges! All are in harmony with the environment. The new double railway line, including the part from Tithorea to Domokos, will cut the trip time from Athens to Thessaloniki by 1 1/2 hours. In this video I have uploaded: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2xBRjjl3c88.html you may see the works of the new line at Tithorea (Nov. 2016) at the start of the video and then, in a minute, the 'sad' part from there to Bralos.... Papadia.... Asopos.... Trachina.... However, we do hope this part to become an international railfans attraction for excursion trips.
I find it really hard to understand how such a railway was ever built. it must have cost an amazing amount of money and taken many human lives. fantastic journey . thank you
