Drivers eye view, Ararat to Maroona, Aug 2024 

ARARAT, the town where I lived,went to high school and was born in. Maroona I went to primary school. In its day Maroona railway station had up to twelve staff.

In BG days, there was a trivial question, where can two up or down trains cross? Langi Logan. I had a work colleague who used to work at Ararat Station, every now and then he’d be sent to Langi Logan to clean the station building, then a stop for the Portland rail motor. I dimly recall it was a staff station. Block post?

Once I was with a group which had arranged for The Overland to stop at Maroona, we were hustled into the guard’s van. I remember the pub near the station had nice meals, forget how long ago. I’ll have to look up the list of tours ran by the Rail Tourist Association.

Does it make any difference driving in the wet? Do you have to brake earlier to eventually stop because of maybe slippage or grip issues (longer braking allowances)!

When are they ever going to reinstate the western leg of the Y to Maryborough at Ararat? I went past the other morning at 3am and there was an ARTC ute and he looked to be changing the batteries on the warning lights on the baulked track. They go to a lot of effort to keep it out of service, perhaps they could put it back into service and avoid going to Maroona and reversing ends when heading to, or going west. I'm sure the reason has to do with money or lack of it. So much inefficiency. Also I have another question. Why do long trains take the loop on the Ararat - Maryborough line near Elmhurst when there's a cross with a shorter train? They hold short trains on the main line when crossing. It seems ridiculous having a long train in the loop with the back half hanging out on the main line when the short train could easily fit in the loop and the long train could hold short at either end of the loop on the main line and wait for the short train to enter the loop. Perhaps it's for training or something, but on the face of it there seems no operational sense to it.

Should have taken a left turn at Ararat and come to sunny Adelaide for a visit.😁 Well, cold and windy Adelaide lately.😆
