Travel with the train driver as we journey from Southern Cross to Horsham on the interstate standard gauge track from Melbourne to Adelaide in locomotive C501. Oct 2023. #driverseyeview #driversview #train #traindriversview #heritage
Hey mate nothing will match those locos when it comes to design elegance and majestic workmanship from Sir Nigel but for a diesel locomotive they are superb in their own way.
When I was living by the line @ Lynton in the early 80s. C class were the big & brash bad boys. There were no BLs,Gs or Ns yet & C were the only through running loco. Almost everything else was 930s, few 900s or 830s (@ that stage) & all 700 were on SG by then. BOY! Could you here the Cs coming up the hill. Even from Mitchem or Hawthorn on a quiet night.
@@driver667 I can honestly say I enjoyed every day; except 28 Feb-1982. When it took two ambulances to get me from Singleton signalbox, with a back injury haha.
@@driver667 That's true. The irony is, some time after, I applied for Driver Trainee AND a higher Signalling post and I got both. I chose to stay Signalling. My back became worse, and I had to retire on 'Ill Health' Had I chose the other I may well have been Driver until about last year. We never know what's around the next bend.
Hey mate just finished tonight and I loved every second of those 5 and a bit hours. I travelled that route with the family (not quite as it went via Ballarat) to Adelaide years back on the Overland when they used 2 N classes with a much longer train as they do now, so it was nice to see. Thanks for the effort of recording. Cheers.
Man I am just mesmerised by you just doing your job. Still watching and will be over a few nights and most people don't realise how much of a climb to Hoppers Crossing station is (heading west and me living there) as i noticed you had to notch up to get you over the top. Great work and thanks.
Never disappoints! 5 hours of bliss here for me. Will watch progressively over the next 3 days. Lots of people filming the departure at SC. Is that normal, or was this a special trip of some sort? Thanks as always! You have the best job in the world 🙂🙂
I recognised every metre of the first 20 min (western suburbs of melbourne, metro line). It was great to see the rest of the line to Horsham from your perspective, thanks mate!
Fantastic as always and is there only one standard gauge track in and out through the Melbourne yards to Southern Cross if so I find that unusual but it must work okay. Thanks
That was interesting. So many questions: 1. What camera are you using? 2. I would have thought you'd go via Melton, Ballarat... 3. How many carriages did you have?
I use a gopro. The line to Horsham and beyond is the standard gauge interstate line. The line through Melton and Ballarat is broad gauge and finishes at Ararat. From memory we had around 8 or 9 or so carriages on the train. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍 😀
The very first thing I noticed, in every siding this train passed you see freight cars, compared to a rail journey video in Europe it's the exact opposite, it's all passenger carriages and very few freight cars.
@@driver667 In Europe it doesn't matter where you go there are always more passenger cars than there are freight cars. This one is a perfect example. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aHpChnRzZXo.html
Lately I've been getting into cab-view videos from all over the world. I've noticed on many different locomotives, German, Swiss and French there's this "time bomb" ticking in the cab and here's the ticking in this locomotive as well. I've left comments asking what that ticking sound is and never had a reply. So, may I ask you what that ticking sound is ? I love the old VR livery and this machine is so shiny and clean, just another throwback to my growing up in Broadmeadows right next to the railway line. There's a signal about 100 meters away from where we used to live and often the trains would stop and wait a while. Then when they got clearance the sounds of the locomotives winding up and the wagons, clunking as the locomotives took up the slack was awesome, even in the middle of the night.
That ticking sound is the older style hasler speed recorder which records all the details of the trip on a paper roll. Listening to the train power up and take up the slack in the wagons is always good to listen to. Glad you enjoyed the ride 👍 😀
what amazes me the most is all the switches that you have to go thru. someone, somewhere has to make sure that ALL the switches are set right for your entire journey and YOU have to trust that someone did their job right. that would be a headache for me and probably give me a lot of anxiety.
And I have a responsibility to ensure I am going the right way also as the signalling often indicates where the points are set to take me. A joint effort between signaller and driver 👌👍😀
@@driver667 Yep I'm a ex-pat Vic in Tas. My dad was a Loco driver for Vicrail at Toolamba. My Fav is the B class, L class Loco's, T class High Cab, X class and finally C class. Strewth I am 62 and I remember dad taking me to work at 3am in Toolamba on a T class loco and he allowed me to operate the train and horn on shunting duties. LMAO I thought I was King blowing the horn and reversing the engine hooking up the rolling stock the old GY wagons. Man I miss also watching the old Southern Aurora with the Neon name on the last carriage and The Overlander passing through Sunshine. Also the Steam Locos chugging through dropping their coal for us to collect for the fire. Not to mention the old Tate and Harris trains. I wish I could go back to the 60's and early 70's and live in a loop of 2 decades. When VFL was the pinnacle of Aussie rules, When Mario Milano and Cheif Billy White Wolf and Killer Carl Cox were wrestling kings. When Essendon airport was Victoria's International Airport. When you could spend 10 shillings and come home with a huge bag of fireworks that would last you for 3 months. When horse drawn carts delivered your milk at 4am and butchers and grocers delivered your meat, bread and veggies to your door. Man the were beautiful times. Thanks for the lovely memories though of the beaut sounds of Vicrail diesel and horns. Nice one
@@clinteastwood8485 there are a lot of memories there and fondness of those times. The world is ever changing. Who knows what it will look like in another 40 years. 🤔 Glad you enjoyed the ride and it brings back memories for you. 👍😀
correct me if Im mistaken. but doesnt the Horsham line go towards Wendouree? Because, when I was on my way to Ararat for a family gathering, I saw on the map that it goes past Horsham and Nhil. Just wondering because from my trip from Adelaide, we went past Bordertown, Nhil, and Horsham, then took a whole different route that went towards Geelong via past the depot, not the actual station Nevermind, I saw it, I just had no time to watch the full video, hahahaha
@@driver667 Oh and also, a video recommendation, maybe make a V/Line train compilation? Like, you add like maybe 20 minute videos of you driving around Victoria. For example, you can do 20 minutes on the Geelong line, 20 minutes on the Warnambool line, just a recommendation for your hard work in entertaining us, and showing us spectacular views of Australia
@@driver667 Like American USA, Australian immigrants named many new towns after their originals in Britain. Horsham just one example. Here are many more. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_locations_in_Australia_with_an_English_name. I enjoy being the driver, though distances in Oz are enormous, and the scenery can be very similar for hundreds of miles. I skip sections or put it on 2x playback.
@@josephinebennington7247 we have quite a few places named after places and people in Britain. I am very happy to hear you enjoy the videos. Australia certainly is a big country. 👍😀
You can tell this is in America simply because the driver's on the wrong tracks! I was amazed that there wasn't a major incident - but then, the more I watched and thought about it, all the other drivers are on the wrong tracks as well, so, strangely, this seemed to negate the possibility of absolute carnage. It's actually quite clever - if everybody drives on the wrong tracks, there won't be any accidents. Bravo!
An interesting theory 😀 It's here in Australia and the signalling allows the trains to run on either track in either direction safely 👍 But I like what you wrote. Glad you enjoyed it. 🤣👍😀
@@driver667 Thank you for correcting me, and I apologise for not realising that this is in Australia. Great channel that was recommended to me by the RU-vid algorithm - and I've subscribed : )
@@MarcGordonChandler no problem. Welcome to the channel 😀 I did enjoy reading your comment. I would like to visit the states again sometime and video some of the lines over there. There are quite a lot....🤔 Very happy you enjoyed the ride. 👍 😀
