Drivetrain with Washing Machine Motors

You have two motors so stearing is practically done. Just go for one swivel wheel on front of the vehicle and stear by different drivewheel speeds. Nice project!

Just add a car seat and you'll have an electric car... :D

Hi, I just stumbled onto your videos and I have to say they are great, and thank you for making them. I'm a sculptor in the US and I have a Miller Bobcat welder/generator that I built a rolling cart for. It works great for moving it around the shop, but the Bobcat weighs so much that its nearly impossible to load onto my trailer by myself. Nearly 600 pounds with fuel, or 275 Kilos. I too love to engineer/construct kinetic devices, but I honestly don't have the depth of understanding that you do when it comes to choosing the right combination of components. I love this video, and your use of washing machine motors. Do you think a setup like yours in this video would provide enough torque to move my generator up a 10-20 degree grade? And my other concerns would be speed control and direction control (forward/backward). I will continue following your videos to learn more, but was hoping you could tell me if this sounds like a viable option. Thank you! Nice work!...oh, another key bit of information: I would like to power the motor/motors with the generator itself, so that I don't need batteries or anything. So the motors could be AC or DC via the generator.

Its very cool how you reuse washing machine motors. I live in Canada and it is a little more difficult. The motors here are induction motors with motor capacitor on the start winding

I very much look forward to to seeing this project move forward. For months I've been trying to wrap my head around how to do something similar with smaller universal motors taken out of vacuum cleaners.

I build a rc mower before, and actually haven't push a mower over 4 years , but I used different motors. The washer motors you're using are exposed so dirt and water will get in it which will destroy it in few months. The tires will not get any traction on grass or dirt road, the homemade plastic belt guide will goes off track . After all said and done this thing will weight a ton with all those metals. Check my old rc mower videos to see how many frame versions I have . This topic has beaten to death and there's no was to set it autonomous

Use caster wheels on the front and steer with differential power on the motors.

Where is part 2? When you take a (hypothetically) phone app for radio control w/ phone port radio antenna/receiver and connect it to this: but it has a 'mount' (allegedly) for a 'paintball' 'marker'...and also allegedly thermal/daylight cameras/sensors?

It is not a big diffirence in diameter betwwen the wheel and the washing machine poulley, why not using the lighter poulleys as wheel where the belts can act as tracks? Also, the steering is most simple on tracks vehicle.

Kids got 4 different battery cars or scooters, all lead batteries. Always having battery problems with these. Here in US , big box stores and and Amazon have Black Friday deals that usually have new lithium packs . Last year , kobalt had 20volt for 10 bucks. Better tech and chargers might be way to go. The batteries have to be deep cycle and you are on border of just using golf cart battery setup. Just"my" dumbass thoughts as watching, whatever u do, I am sure to enjoy as always. Thx for vid

ANY of the sleeves on a wall anchor that's the diameter of the shaft used here are excellent as bearing spacers for these wheels as they do not come with such a thing. It's worth investing in the 10 15 euros in four such bolts for a project as the bearings are horrid on their own. ALSO, such four bolts can be transformed in to axles themselves if welded to a T profile length of iron. Myself i've done this and it works beautifully. My wheels can take 178kg per wheel (goes much wider if you put a spacer in between the two split rims and widen the wheel) and i've moved after my bicycle a load that was 342 kgs at 14 km/h. VERY good as such, and it's a worthy way to make an axle if buying the stock is too expensive in one's area, or, as i've noted with a few of my friends, next to impossible. I'm blessed to live in a capital, others, are not.

I gut the motors wheels and lower frame. from a mobility scooter for $10.00, very good motors with gear reduction. I'm wanting to put them on a E Bike project. don't know if that's what I'm going to use them for yet. I have other stand on scooter motors. 250&350 watt. but I want more like 48v 1000watt motors. or larger. I'd love about 2000-3000 watts. I'm no little guy. I need power to get me down the road. I don't lime going slow. great video can't wait to see how it ends up. how much voltage are you going to use. on the motors? I have a 90vDC motor also. from a conveyor system. it will run on as low as I have tested 12 v. but I was hoping to use it as a DC generator. on a water wheel project

I could not believe how thin the steel sheet metal that these hand truck wheel rims are pressed from. It could not be any thinner without being mistaken for tin foil :-) I have purchased some and compared to the existing rims on the rather inexpensive hand wheel cart. Built to a price no? Certainly we will not be welding anything to them without careful amperage adjustment. I don't know what might be done with TIG

Well you sure are a bit of a whizz. Envious of your electronics 'know how'. Just make that as simple as you can for we lesser knowledgeables. Also when you do it would like to know as much as possible about the power you get out when run on DC at various voltages.= Nice!

You could run chains from the rear wheels to the front wheels, use the independent motors to steer.

In North America, at least, we generally say "nyloc" for those nuts with the plastic in them, a pseudo portmanteau of "nylon" and "lock". Thanks for the vid, looks like a fun project and I await your next installment!

Hello . I have a one phase motor with some thing like 33200 rpm. The motor has a condenser. Can I control its crazy amount of rpm ? People say no but am sure there is some way to do that .

Great. But still movement transfer from the motor shaft to the wheels is not that efficient, especially after some load is added. I suggest steel chains and gears instead, like a motorcycle.

Standing off the drive pulley on bolts like that is not going to work. You will never get the belt tension right , and the whole thing would twist up under load even if you did.

Excellent work! I'm guessing the motors will have a lot of torque. Probably spin the belts you have on it now, so perhaps a chain or serpentine belt? Very interesting!

Fixing the pulley with those bolts is a bad construction. It creates leverages on the rim, especially with the load changes that are to be expected in this place

You may be interested in constructing your own metal melting foundry as well. You could cast your own aluminum & copper parts for this project. A stainless trash can and "plaster of paris " work well; firebrick or kaowool are best. I will also donate a box of li-Ion 18650 cells to you for this robot. They have better energy density and more importantly, will be free! Message me and I'll send them.

Nah just use the pulleys and give it donks. That one in the picture already looks like one!

but the torque is very bad with this configuration. you should insert step down transmission in between the motor and the wheels.

Man that's cool get some batteries and steering and put a chair on it you can drive it anywhere.

Great idea, I don't think that these WM motors have enough torque with the smaller pulley at the wheels. But I am sure you will invent a way around it.

A power tool would be much more interesting than a robot.

Not bad TIG work. The test worked BECAUSE there was no tension. Better try again under load. Don’t use rod. Use round tubing. You are going to find out what happens with anything but very deep filets on rod that big. Especially in soft stuff like stainless. Talk to someone who welds on race cars or airframes.

this project could of been combined with a tricycle project, so you could do welding only once :) I admire your work man, I feel sorry I cant support since I am from country with 200e monthly income...if I was a neighbor I would hang all noon in your workshop helping if needed, learning electronics:)

Try bicycle sprockets and bicycle chain instead of pulleys and rubber belts, I think you will find that you can achieve better torque or power transmission to the drive wheels when adding more weight to future renditions of this robot you are wanting to build.

The original motor mounts had bushings. Shame they couldn't be made to work. Also, Those are actually called "sealed lead acid" batteries or SLA btteies

Go to your local auto scrap yard- serpentine belts, pulleys, and tensioners are usually cheap. The grooved belt will help with alignment.

Cut the plastic axle flange down some so the belt drive sits against the rim. It will be stronger against the rim flange. and your bolts won't flex or bend. looks like it will fit good against the wheel rim.

i was ready to say the same that Machinery Repairman said, steer by differential velocity in the motors and use caster wheels on the non-powered wheels. also, you can go even further, you can make a six wheeler, with 4 wheels on caster, and the fixed powered wheels on the center (second 'axle'). or you can go even beyond that, with some bearing and springs you can make an modified rocker boogie suspension, like the mars rovers.

Hi ! The torque will twist the M8 bolts compared to the rubber wheels for sure - you have to support them much more ! The belt will self-center because there is a little "crowning" on the caster wheel.

Nice. I'd put the white pulley wheels on a lathe and cut a v-grove in the surface to make the pulley belt self centre into it when tight. Was there any room to put the motors under instead of over the frame?

hi. spring loaded electrical motor mounts are readily available, or you can make them to keep belt tension. for my experience i suggest you plan for some cover for the belts as they are easily derailed by debris or small rocks that the wheels could pick up. a skid steer type vehicle should be something to consider providing you have two transmissions
