In this video, we'll repair a hole in a Driveway. Part Two is here: Driveway Repair, Putting a Bag of Blacktop Asphalt on a Damaged Surface UPDATE • Driveway Repair, Putti...
NOTE TO ALL THE VIEWERS. Remember, the nasty comments may be from driveway companies who want to charge you a fortune TO REPAIR YOUR DRIVEWAY. The driveway companies don't want you to fix your driveway. I've heard that driveways start at about $5000 and up to do a small driveway! A few years ago, I made a bunch of calls about driveways, AND NONE 100% never even returned my phone call, PROBABLY because I live in the bad part of town AND THEY FIGURED THEY WOULD MAKE NO MONEY OFF ME. $5000 American Dollars!
Hey Jim, thanks for the video. You really motivated me to repair the front of my house. Few companies quoted me, ranging between 8K to $13 K. One them said, "this is New York." It took me a weekend to get the job done, but thanks to your video, I got it done. Thanks man
I just put a topcoat of cement over my whole driveway, it took less than two hours. If your driveway is asphalt, you could coat it with a blacktop sealer in 30 minutes or less. I think a 5 gallon cost about $35.00.
Thanks for the video. I need to do the same thing. I need to put down about 4" of QP also. I have a hand tamper since it is a 4" by 24' area. Hopefully it sets up and doesn't dip.
You're welcome. Four years later and that part of the driveway is still in perfect shape. Does the job for me. I just put down six bags of concrete on the driveway today, and gonna do more tomorrow! Makes for a fun day! LOL!
1.) You need to clean the area of loose debris first, so the asphalt can grip/adhere to something that won't move. 2.) Once in place, you want to tamper the asphalt down so it compacts itself and you get a good bond with the ground beneath it. Also, good compaction will help in keeping it together from changes in weather (heat and cold). 3.) Wait 60 to 90 days before applying driveway sealant to ensure the asphalt hardens. Do not apply sealant to soft asphalt.
Thanks for the heads up, I'm about to patch and seal my driveway and I guess I'll be better off sealing first, patch, and then resealing the patches in a couple months
ONE YEAR AND LOOKS GREAT! WITHSTOOD THE WEIGHT OF AN 8000 POUND f250, AND A LONG COLD WET WINTER THAT MELTED AND FROZE MANY MANY TIMES TOO! WELL WORTH $11.00 DOLLARS!
I would've put in a piece of that slate you have there and place on top of new blacktop and run it over with car a few times to pack it. I have done this in the past. Worked great.
Pulling in off the road my driveway has about a 3 inch drop on the left and goes down to about an inch and a half on the right and it’s a down sloped driveway so when anyone pulls in the bottom scrapes a bit, I was thinking 2-3 bags of this stuff spread out like a ramp would fix that, how did it hold up for you? I know it’s not permanent but once it’s in place it should be easy to patch again right?
Should work great! You can add a little small gravel too to make it go farther. Now that I look at the 3", I'd use concrete (not mortar, concrete has gravel in it.), use the high strength stuff, $4.98 a bag. or maybe the real strong stuff $20/#30 bag, I think it's in a blue or yellow bag at Lowes. Concrete is great but it might break up that thin (I have that problem in my driveway). The stronger stuff is strengthened with glue and fibers. Maybe a layer of the strong concrete, then put the asphalt on top. I'm think if the 3" asphalt does not hardener, you'll have a squishy mess under your tires. Whatever you do, you'll probably have to patch it up ever year or so, especially the thinner side.
Compaction is the key here! This homeowner should apply a little more force I would think! The cement application might help harden it but not be best used if a second layer of black top is to be added soon!
Agree....I was given some not used asphalt. I broke it up, spread it around, tamper only....gas one not like jackhammer. It broke up even then. Redoing it a layer tamp...layer tamp. Until 5 inch thick. O wish I knew someone to roll it
I'm trying to even up my driveway that is rough on my car as it has a drop down from the curb. Will this help me level? How is the product looking now?
Hi MH! It's great, and I even drive way 8000 pound truck on it. I had a few comments say it won't work, I'll do an update video tomorrow and post it. Thanks for watching! Jim
@@JimVincitore thx a lot. I just bought a home with a brand new 3 car concert driveway but the city owns the curb and it's all busted so my challenger takes a hit due to it not having a smooth transition to the street...How much is this stuff and where can I get it? I have a 3 car concert driveway thats probably 20 ft in length.
@@MHSenju3000 It's $11.00 a bag, not cheap. A fella across the street from me put in a big shed, I think he got permission from the city to cut out the curb, so he could create a driveway up to the shed. He cut it out himself.
Having never yet done this I can tell you before hand you prep the area first get rid of rocks and smooth the area actually get rid of all the rocks use flat sand or limestone or something similar so that it lasts much longer open bag and pour it on top clearly what you never want to do but aye.. not my driveway not my problem

@@JimVincitore lol Jim, your replies to comment over these years are killing me 😂 I am gonna to try your exact video later this week. Thank you for posting.
If you have an entire driveway to do, hire yourself a concrete mixer and youtube how to lay a concrete driveway, It is unbelievably simple to get professional results and far cheaper than Cold Lay Asphalt, Just use Cold Lay for pre-existing holes to your Asphalt but use Bitumen paint to seal edges first.
Right. If I was 20 years younger, I'd have a new driveway put in by a pro. The house is 120+ years old, and I'm 62...at this point, who cares about the driveway.
@@JimVincitore agreed, at your age just keep patching the driveway as needed. It’s not worth the $5-$10,000 to replace it unless your a wealthy man. My mom is 64 with an eroding asphalt driveway, I spend $100 a year patching it up and that’s gonna have to work until she passes on because she doesn’t have $6,000 for a new driveway
I'm not sure. Pick a sunny day, might work. Cement will work, and it's cheaper. I've thrown a bag of dry cement on the driveway in a snow storm, and squirted water on it with a hose, and it's still solid 10 years later.
The reason they tell you to get rid of all the big Stones is because just like the asphalt when it's laid down at first it will compact as you drive on it and any big stuff in there will come up through it and puncture your tire it's better not have any big stones in there at all!
Hi MP! An older fella, a salesman at a hardware store, told me it's the tamping down that makes it hard, the pressure. I guess that why they steam roller it on the highways. It's been a few months since I put it down, yes it's hard. Thanks for watching! Jim
Hi Wayne! LOL! Perfect job. Not a crack or no damage! Looks perfect, and that with an 8000 pound F250 driving and parking on it! And scraping over it with an 800 pound steel blade snow plow! Thanks for watching! Jim
TRY TO GO 4 INCHES TO MAKE IT LAST, BUT ON A DRIVEWAY WITH LITTLE TRAFFIC, 2 INCHES IS GOOD FOR A TEMPORARY FIX. GROUND UP STONE WORKS GOOD TOO FOR A FAST EASY FIX. JUST SHOVEL IT IN THE HOLES. MOST BIGGER LANDSCAPING COMPANIES SELL IT.
Hi MR! It worked great! Did not break up a bit! Thanks for watching! Jim Here is the update video. Driveway Repair, Putting a Bag of Blacktop Asphalt on a Damaged Surface UPDATE ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FD-6nwCJhr4.html
Just a week or two ago, I surfaced half the driveway with bags of cement from Lowes. I'm working on the video for that too. Cost about $100 or so, but it was hard work mixing the cement.
@@JimVincitore i am fixing to do a 5 by 7 and a 4 by 3 that the concrete has caved in and broken, i went to Lowe's and saw QPR and they were in 50 lbs bag for about 12 dollars, so do you think i should put mortar or cement on top of it too or just the qpr will work. I appreciate your input
It won't work that is cold patch made for a temporary fix in potholes this will just push out on the sides unless you stayed off for about 3 months until it set up
Hi HW! It's a low traffic area, I just drive up and park. But I have parked my 8000 pound F250 with snow plow there all year, and it's holding up better than the rest of the driveway! I'm surprised it held up that good myself! LOL! Check out the update video I did on the patch last fall. Thanks for watching! Jim
@@JimVincitore you get rid of the loose material so that you get good adhesion all those fines and loose material are going to allow your patch to bread up after one season or less.
Why wouldn't you do it in sections that covered the width.. the way your doing that makes virtually no sense, That is not tamping you need weight and muscle, sorry for the critic, but this is not correct
Hi Tony! Thank you! Still working great! 120 year old house, not worth spending $2000 on a driveway. My grandfather landed here from Italy in 1917 and I'm still here. My father always said, "Don't leave, it's paid for." Thanks for watching! Jim
Im doing the same job with my driveway, bought a tamper for 30 dollars and after 20 stamps with the tamp the wooden pole broke off, bought an all steel tamper. Still barely works
What an insignificant person (avoiding nasty words). You gotta compact it if you want it to set correctly. The more you compact it, the longer is the lifespan.
The mortar dust helps it harden up. Gotta compact it hard. Put a board over it then run it over with a car a few times. Bag asphalt staying soft is a common complaint for some brands.
Omg get to the point we only watch this type of thing on RU-vid so that we don’t have to read the instructions especially every word on the front of the bag.
@@JimVincitore I'm about to rebuild a berm where my driveway meets the street. Rainwater floods in my driveway ever since I knocked out the old one with the plow. Thanks for the video, very helpful.
