Driving a Porsche 356A Speedster is a Sense of Occasion

Starting any classic car is special. There is the sensation that something distinct and superior is taking place because of the rituals observed and details you notice. On this 1956 Porsche 356A T1 Speedster for example the windscreen is removable, the seats have a thin fiberglass shell and the steering wheel is elegant and spartan. There is little concession to comfort and virtually none to safety.
When new, this was the least expensive Porsche available and had a 'less is more' philosophy behind it. Indeed, the car was intended to be taken to the track and be a legitimate club-racing contender. It seems that that's precisely how this 356 spent a large portion of its early life. Raced around Connecticut, the car racked up trophies and actually won the E-Production Championship in 1963. The majority of this car's first 50,000 miles were racked up on the track.
It wasn't designed to coddle. Although it only makes about 60hp, it causes an adrenaline rush as you're close to the road, the instruments, and there isn't a lot surrounding you. There's immediacy about the car. And according to the owner, Mr. Jon Warshawsky, "It feels like a racing machine." When driving on B-roads, "you feel like you should be on the track." There is an intimate mechanical interaction because the power-band is narrow; both you and the car have to agree that the next shift is appropriate otherwise there might be bogging or might over-rev the engine. The feeling that something great is happening is due to this constant dialogue between you and the car.

I don't understand why the Boxsters have taken such a beating with people putting them down..."its a poor mans Porsche" and all. They for the most part what the Speedsters were of their time. An affordable fun to drive car! I have a 2000 Boxster that I got 4 years ago and I drive it daily with no complaints at all.

every car ahead of its time lives the same fate. Then one Day the trumpets sound and you can not find one to call your own with out shoveling out two or three times the original price. It has to mature on the sports car vine ,into full maturity. Then it becomes into its own and captures the newly awakened hearts. I think ,the thing with the bixter is the show car had a lot of unique elements that were left off the production car. Which was a big let down to enthusiasts waiting for its production version. when it came more watered down without the more exciting show car features the crowd turned on the car . This all changes with time.

Yes, for all of us that love the two seat rear or mid engined sports cars today is the day of the cheap Boxter...this too shall pass. They will appreciate in value and we will say "Damn I wish I would have bought that Boxter when they were cheap!" Just look at the 914 they are skyrocketing in price and fifteen years ago you couldn't give them away, lol. I have a 951 right now and am trying to decide on which I want next, a 914 or a 928. I don't know though maybe the Boxter should be the one....decisions decisions, lol.

I agree, except I had a Boxster when they first came out and it was a horrible car lol, I ended up dumping the Boxster and getting an S2000 that I still have 17 years later (or whatever it was).

A 356 stepping out, lmao. Don't get me wrong, nice cars, but the only way u will get a stock 356 to step out is when u go too fast into a turn. -1963 356 S T6 driver

This 356A Speedster was involved in a fatal crash caused by a driver high on weed in San Diego, CA, on March 27, 2016. Hyun Choi was driving a gray Toyota Corolla sedan while high on weed when she hopped a median and hit the white classic sports car head-on. The crash killed the Porsche’s passenger, 43-year-old Amanda Walzer, and critically injuring its driver, Jon Warshawsky. Walzer could have survived, but since the vehicle was a 1956 model, airbags and three-point seatbelts were not required at the time, so thus the car only had lap belts and no airbags. Choi was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.

This looks around Ojai & Oak View, Santa Ana Road, and hwy 33 inland of Ventura, California. I grew up there, drove my 240z on these roads, and these videos make a soul terrible homesick. Man I remember when there were hundreds of 356 kit cars that were pretty hot.

I think this car is equivalent to a retired greyhound that used to race all weekends but now just sits around your house and goes for the occasional walk :-) Porsche 356s are one of my favorite cars, I think they are elegant in their simplicity, but even so they are worlds apart from their benign Beetle basics. Want to buy one when I get older. They look like fun.

Beautiful car. A good friend has a restored '56 356A, also with the beehive taillights. Done semi-outlaw style, with a 110HP Super 90. Great fun to drive. The most amazing thing about a 356 is how Bug-like it looks underneath, contrasted with the fact that it drives, sounds, and handles absolutely nothing like a Bug.

Magnificent piece of art! This car looks very elegant and sophisticated in all its simplicity. Such a shame that the owner passionately tells us how much 'race-car' DNA it has, yet is not passionate enough to share with the world what such a machine sounds like when you put your foot in it. As much as this car is art, it is a gentleman's racer; yes it is valuable, but it will or should not break if you drive it like you stole it!

lamonstra I think they're blaming it on weed but it sounds like she was just a negligent driver. Also the 356 is a tiny car and may not have been seen. And driving high and driving drunk aren't the same thing.
@lamonstra1464
@lamonstra1464 7 лет назад
No, the pipe at the scene says different. I (we) don't have any tox screen results so its all just waste of time speculation. needless to say, impared driving is always bad, and in a large vehicle its way bad!
@KenFerris
@KenFerris 7 лет назад
Not seen? The high driver crossed a center divide to cause the wreck. Does it matter that she may not have seen the Porsche? She was on the wrong side of the road. Driving high and driving drunk ARE the same when driver condition has impaired any ability to drive responsibly.

$2995 back in 1957 are about $28500 now, so i would say it's an amazing price for the car it is. Yeah, of course nowdays we are habituated that porsche is a luxury brand so seeing one at that launch price seems wierd but back then it was like buying a VW, it was nothing more, just like Infiniti and Nissan nowdays, a cooler brand of a standard one

I purchased a 356B Roadster colour rubinrot when released in Australia in 1960. The thumbnail is the actual photo. The white walls ? What was I thinking. The blonde girl in the thumbnail I married and after 56 years still together. She later became a well known fashion model. I paid about $5000 au for it,but pounds back then. Still have the ignition key which has PORSCHE engraved on it. Never drove an A but believed the oversteer made handling a challenge. I know a couple of friends killed in A coupes, thrown out after a crash, no seat belts back then. Before the B I had a 1956 100/4 Healey, which I traded for a MGA 1500cc. Hated the A. The Porsche was nice but still loved the old Healey except bought second hand and had an abusive owner.

Its been a long love affair, that keeps calling me back, there hasn't been a car made since that stirs me more, other than a 911 Porsche (air cooled only).
