Follow me for a day where we cover 600 miles in a Porsche Taycan 4S. Are electric cars really now capable of long distance journies? How much charging time is needed? Is it heaven or hell?
Well I find it easy. How much charging time will I need?
How much will the journey cost for charging?
Here you will find out.
Same distance as London to Geneva, Bournemouth to Inverness.
We've done this is Teslas which is easy, but how about this fast charging Porsche - it's one of the best electric vehicles out there!

I’ve regularly done 500+ miles without stopping. That being said, my next car will most likely be electric. It just won’t be a tesla. Might be an i4.

That's complete bullshit. The car HAD to stop MULTIPLE times. You can choose not to stop in a ICE car with 600 miles range. Or you can stop if you CHOOSE to.

I’ve just took delivery of my model 3 and in the first three weeks I’ve covered 2966 miles and it’s awesome. So simple to live with.

Agree Model 3 is epic and the tesla charging network too. We have a Porsche taycan on order as a second car - I’m already wobbling thinking if we can live with it given the lower range, charging network complexity and availability etc.. Tesla will always be the long distance car

Did 500mi in a day in my e208 this summer, little bit I’d range anxiety at one short point, apart from that, costed £27, very comfy and smooth drive down. Took about an hour longer than my dads diesel jag did a few years ago

Just did East Midlands - Berlin and back. Easy stuff really. A little planning but the car does it mostly (ModelS). So much easier now than even a few years ago. Most of the SuC locations also had Ionity and other charger companies at the same site.

I would love it if you could get your hands on a BMW iX - to get your thoughts on range/quality/features etc etc compared with the eTron, Model X and Taycan. You are so unbiased, unlike most 'reviews'

Great video !!! The Ionity network makes travelling from Lands End, or, Dover, up to John o’Groats and back easily doable in an EV ⚡️👍🏻 If you’re not in an Ionity Partner car then it will be more costly, but no one is doing that every day so worth paying for.

At 09:55 all the Tesla Supercharger stalls were occupied, which is amazing for UK. 😅 As Tesla ownership grows, this will perhaps become more common especially during public holidays and weekends. Here in Hong Kong, we get this all the time (even past midnight at the popular Superchargers) and this will be a problem until home charging is available. Nevertheless, appreciate your great video and promotion of EVs.

I'll be doing Scotland to Great Yarmouth (About 400 miles) next week in my MG5. Bit apprehensive because I only got the car last week and am yet to go an overly long distance, but I am looking forward to it.

First- great video as always!!! For reference this is my weekend stating in a few hours in a model 3 long range (we have a model Y performance too). Drive from Philly to Norwalk CT (170 miles), no need to charge, plug in at the hotel overnight, tomorrow- drive to. Boston (175 miles) and then back to the hotel Saturday night (total of 200 miles)- plug in at the hotel overnight. Sunday - back to Philly (340 miles)- will need one 10-15 minute stop. Total- maybe 725 miles - total time stopped to charge - 10-15 minutes- cost - $5. Its that’s easy.

Richard at 4:20 You were speaking about the efficiency of the Tesla model S versus the Taycan. I agree that Tesla makes and a very efficient car and has done so for many years. But don’t just look at the wheel diameter, You should mention the tire width, the Tesla I believe is 265 versus the Taycan with 305’s in the back. That is a lot of rubber on the road and with wet weather like you had it can definitely have impact.

Another great video Richard, once again showing how ridiculous petrol heads comments are about how electric cars don’t work/are inconvenient for long trips. (I’m a former petrol head myself but now fully convinced regarding electric being the way forward). The final comments around 600 miles only needing 47 minute stop really hit the negativity out the park. In reality most people need to stop for longer than that for such a distance in an ICE car. People just don’t think it through and that possibly is the issue. Having to think it through means changing what they do now with an ICE car but it would actually would make them realise how their comments are futile. Thanks Richard for another great vid. Bet your knackered!!!!!!

I just did 2,000 miles in a diesel car (to Spain & back) and recorded every pitstop to see if it would have made any time difference with an EV, and I think it would have been perfect. By the time you have had a comfort break, for yourself and the dog, and grabbed a coffee, that is 20-30 mins. Enough time for a good juice up. France seems to have a lot of Ionity chargers, Spain less so.

The bit missing from this video is the pre planning you need to do with an EV vs a combustion engine. For example, you didn’t just happen upon the Porsche centre hull. Even then, in my experience that still leaves two unknowns; charger reliability (I’m amazed at how often chargers are out of service) and charger availability (with few exceptions you find one or two chargers. If they’re full you could have an hour wait) I use zap map to plan a route and some back up options. In my petrol car I don’t need to think. Don’t get me wrong, I love my EV 90% of the time, but the 10% of times I’m doing a longer journey I’d happily swap for a petrol engine.

Or a diesel engine..... VW CC 174 bhp remapped . fuel tank 70L . long range 90-95% motorway driving i can do 1500KMs with no stops

Depends on the car but both Porsche and Tesla will direct you to the most appropriate charger enroute to your destination, I can't say for Porsche or other brands but Tesla will tell you how many spaces are available at a tesla supercharger and will re-direct you if a charger is down.

@@andypyatt2783 the Tesla is more efficient, I’m not talking about the guessometer, it’s wh/m is much better than Porsche for example and it’s proven. It’s not guesswork unlike the mileage remaining counter.

Would like to see you have a bash at this in an ipace with max 180 miles of motorway range and only 100kw max charging speed 😅. They were premium pioneers but others have now surpassed.

The problem I've had with rapid charging is that it takes longer for me to use the services than it takes the car to charge. Last time I stopped at Rugby, I arrived home with 180 miles of range remaining which I would rather not have paid for! Lesson learned - next time I'll set a charge limit...

I'll be driving 300 miles today and thats far enough for me ,i wouldn't do any more in one day alone (fair enough if sharing driving). Only need one 15 minute charging stop but will need at least two stops to pee and eat so the charging takes zero additional time.

Valid point about home charging being waaay cheaper, but remember, not everyone can charge at home and I doubt the cost will not evolve somehow in the future. However, even if say a passat diesel could cost just about the same, it would in no way be as fun to drive. And effortless. And quiet.

I have just learned I have to drive from San Jose, CA to Dallas, TX. So Day 1 of the trip will be 1000 miles to Albuquerque NM. Day 2 will be 650 miles Albuquerque to Dallas. The car will be a 1995 Toyota Camry V6 with 202,000 miles on the odometer. That is what a real car gets used for. Pay attention, electric car groupies.

Hi Richard I always enjoy your road trip videos - we’ll done keep it up. I feel there is a need to provide a wider perspective to really inform and educate those who might not fully understand EV’s and the relative merits of different cars. In this video you only briefly touched on the cars economy and didn’t mention the vehicle or energy cost at all… for the vast majority of your viewers, the Porsche is way out of reach cost wise and you failed to discuss the cost of a 600 mile road trip in kWh both in terms of energy consumed and price per kWh. My point is that for 99% of potential EV buyers, a car with a 90+ kw battery that charges at 350kw is out of reach and spending 69p/kWh on IONITY chargers is like paying £3/litre for petrol…. What I’d like to see is an honest view of vehicle cost and cost per mile and vehicle efficiency which in the longer run is what’s going to underpin the adoption of EV’s. I know you do do videos of EV’s with smaller batteries which charge more slowly, but if these are way more efficient than the KW guzzlers such as the Porsche, they need more airtime…. Hope you appreciate where I’m coming from and recognise the importance of promoting more efficient EV’s particularly with energy prices rising.

Those chargers at Hull, are the same as they at the new Porsche centre in Ferndown! Do they allow Porsche owners to charge for free at their centres? Even at Rugby (so many white Teslas) they charge quick, hardly time for a comfort stop, and eat a snack, even in our slow charging Kona lol

We switched to EVs long ago and currently have MG5 SR and Leaf 24KW. The bad weather makes you slow down - that increaces your range quite a bit. It should at least factor out the low temperature ….. just saying 😉

This is interesting for me as I do long journeys across France, winter and summer, one big SUV, Volvo XC90, one Small 4x4 car. will watch it tomorrow, as a side note I drive from UK to Menorca 754 miles across France to Barcelona, in a Fiat Sidici, to my holiday home where it lives for the summer and I fly back and forth, I do that trip in 12 hours, two overnight ferries, One year I got off the ferry into France next to a Ferrari, he had to stop more and we got to Barcelona at the same time despite him overtaking me regularly, he was needing more fuel stops, the miles you lose when stopping all adds up on your travel time, he was going to the Spanish F1 race, he waved each time he went past, we were next to each other on the ferry so had a chat before we got off, my next car will be electric, just got to get used to taking longer to get places, it is a real fact that journey times will be longer, just got to adjust your attitude to it

As Richard pointed out rather succinctly, "It's not the car that needs to stop - it's me" I think 'most' people would sensibly stop for a comfort break, stretch the legs, grab a coffee / snack after about 3 hours' driving - especially on the UK's grid-locked road network. And that's when you'd be charging your EV, whilst you're inside the Services, instead of just leaving your (ICE) car parked up, doing nothing... So, I think you'd be surprised at, generally, how similar journey times would be, EV vs ICE... 👍

@@jonathantaylor1998 yeah, my problem at the moment is the ferry to Menorca is 1 every 24 hours, so time is everything, Tesla’s are so tempting to me, 3 being a saloon is useless, and the tests of the Y are fidgety steering and very hard suspension with stupidly low profile tires, maybe the answer is to buy aftermarket 18 inch tires with some balloon tyres, think Tesla still believe they need to use “Performance “ to sell cars rather than comfort, I’m a comfort man

I have a tesla and have a Porsche Taycan CT on order. As a newbie to charging outside of the tesla network - it seems the coverage is improving, but do you have one membership to the network and can use any charger, or do you have to subscribe to a bunch of different apps to enable charging from different charging networks? I am getting the longer range pack and the 4s - hopefully this will achieve close to 300 miles

You might find this other video useful: Getting the best from charging your EV in the UK - Tesla and Non-Tesla electric vehicles. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sI30YAn2fMU.html But basically rule 1 is don’t let the car plan for you. It often picks 50kw instead of a 350kw down the road. No car other than Tesla seems to have proper route/charge planning and 50kw on a Taycan is waste of time Use zap map or ABRP to plan a little. Once you know good places then that’s all you need. With Porsche you can get a charge card that works across different platforms, but also use the Porsche charging app and can find and instigate charges from that (useful to have because rfid readers often don’t seem to work). Main benefit of the Porsche charging account is £0.30 per kWh for Ionity ! Cheaper than a Tesla supercharger! But otherwise most places now are just contactless debit card and easy - Instavolt / shell recharge etc Real world range more like 250 but depends what wheels you’ve chosen. Smaller wheels, warm day, gentle driving maybe 300 yeah. But very nice comfortable cars though….

Doesn't Porsche have an agreement with Ionity so you get charging cheaper? I'm on the cusp of ordering an Enyaq 80 Sportline - is charging effortless (and cheaper)? I'm not so sure!

Over the years I've driven toGenoa in Italy quite a bit to visit my wife's sister and the family in a variety of diesel family cars. It's 830 miles each way, we catch an early train and stop on the way for breakfast, lunch and necessary breaks ... I've done it 3 times in a LR Model 3, it takes the sane time as in a diesel. In short, car charging time is less that human charging / break time and the car drives at the same speed on the same road as a diesel ! Refuelling is simpler, plug and charge = no issues with cards not being accepted by petrol pumps (many petrol stations are unmanned for large parts of the day in Italy and France) and cheaper (for now until the government wants it's tax revenues from fossil fuels back). Tesla nav/range prediction is reliable and builds confidence, going into Mont Blanc tunnel heading North with 3% SOC, no trouble at all (once we hit the midpoint of the tunnel and started trundling downhill). I'm approaching retirement, I'd always fancied a fast german estate for those long journeys and exploring Europe in retirement but the limitations of the public charging network at the moment mean that for my specific journey it will take quite a bit longer in a Taycan than a model 3 .... and the Taycan would be twice the price ! So for now the Model 3 is the sensible option (not the end of the World :) ) and I'll be off to BOTB to see if I can win a Taycan one day :) . It will be interesting to see if Tesla move the game along with efficiency and charging with the 4680 cells and cast structure from Berlin when it opens. Having owned a couple of Porsches I have no doubt it is a better driving car, I wonder what the influence in that department of cars built in a European factory for European customers will be, maybe we'll see chassis and steering tuned more to our taste ? And of course let's not forget, no tail pipe emissions or CO2 pumped into the air by airline travel

At an old age you might need to stop often, I don’t. People keep exaggerating when praising their tesla’s. That being said. I keep in mind one additional hour to drive to Austria in an electric car. My next car will most likely be electric, it just won’t be a tesla.

@@zeedustrakok It's nothing to do with age (although that does become an issue), it's safety. London to Genoa is a 15 hour drive with rail crossing, it's illegal for professional drivers to drive uninterrupted and advisory for private drivers (to the point where if you were to be in accident it would be used as evidence against you). We tend to stop to swap over drivers and eat. I own a VW ID.3 as well as a the Tesla and previously I've owned a BMW i3. They are great cars and suit what we use them for perfectly. I'd prefer a Taycan to a model 3 but in some parts of Europe the infra is patchy for these longer journeys and for my specific family needs so it doesn't work, yet. Of course if Tesla do open up the SC network soon (as promised) then that could really change things. But oh yeah, some Tesla owners do like to go on and on, but to be fair the implementation of the technology makes road tripping in a Tesla far easier than in any other brand of car, currently. But it's changing and for a given circumstance a brand outside of Tesla can work for people (thank goodness, we all want a bit of variety).

Yea, you're right, it's doable and folk would stop as often as you did just to have a break. I do wonder however, if Porsche sold a petrol car with 250 mile range, would it get criticism, because you seem to think you don't need more range?

Little bit surprised by the fast charging costs, have/are they increasing as more cars are now using them? Suppose the only concern will be when the government starts some type of ev road charging to reclaim loss of income from vat on fuel - it could make it more expensive than current combustion motors to run. Unless you have a home charger of cause, but that won’t be possible for everyone.

Indeed, when I had my first EV the electric highway chargers were all free…….now we have Ionity charging 69p/kWh. In reality the environment doesn’t want anyone driving, either fossil or EV and a government needs the income somehow 👍

I do wonder about all these people who claim they can go to the toilet at the motorway services in 5 mins. Even if i run i struggle to get under 10 mins, and if i stop to get a bottle of coke or a coffee it's 15 min. And that's enough for 50% top up on my model 3

Turbo (non-s) is better (more livelly) as front motor is less powerful vs. Turbo S where the rear motor is the same, but front is more powerful, thus making it less rear biased. Both plenty fast.

This may sound a very naive question but do you lose charge if stuck in a traffic jam? I have a mega fear of being caught out on charge and getting stuck. It would be great if you could explain. This is just my unqualified opinion, but I believe electric cars don't consume energy when stationary in the same way internal combustion engine cars do, because the latter needs to keep their engine running while an electric motor is able to stay completely stationary if the situation demands it. Thus, I believe the only sources of electricity drain would be AC, radio, and other auxiliary services. If all things above are true, then an electric car shouldn't worry about the annoying fuel wastage from an idling engine when stuck in a traffic jam, although the constant start-stop movement when stuck in traffic probably isn't the most efficient either. Overall, I think electric cars should do great even at slow speeds in busy urban areas.

That works out as costing about 10/mile. I doubt any diesel could do that with a 56mph average over 600 miles! 😉

Works out at 10.4 gallons, plenty could do that journey, I almost did that coming back from France 640 miles, 57mpg, Five people, luggage and a dog. Would have preferred it in the Porsche though but I don’t think my passengers and dog would have approved.

@@FFVoyager . Approx 170 miles were at 80mph, the rest at 70 but with slow traffic around the M25 and pouring rain for the whole 230 miles U.K section. My average speed was about 58 mph over the entire trip.

Imagine getting a pristine condition caused car with 28k miles and 45/48mpg at these speeds for £7k. Loads of xtra driving versus a 41k electric car. My insurance on the used car was also 1/4 of the Tesla model 3 SR which closes the petrol electric gap based on my mileage and average historic mpg.

What price the planet? It's about more than money... Regardless, most EVs do about 120mpg equivalent - far cheaper to run if home charged. Currently, Tesco kindly charge my car for free so I would get 510 miles for, err, £zero.

I have absolutely no faith in anyone with a vested interest in petrol cars to form any sort of unbiased opinion and spend the time to learn how to use an electric car properly. However the problems he faced are largely fixed now due to him getting a charger installed at his garage AND it's true that public charging is a joke in the UK. Only tesla is reliable. The rest I wouldn't even waste my time with

There is always at least one petrolhead who claims to drive a million miles non-stop every day and another one who claims that they can do the 600 miles for less money and quicker in his aunt's Peugeut 208 diesel... Very deliberately and rather foolishly missing the point. The Taycan is a beast of a mile eater and charging speeds are phenomenal. Great car if you need or like that kinda thing. We'll be doing the 600 miles form home to Scrabster this summer in a VW ID.3. The journey will be broken down into three 200 mile days (approximately) as it is our holiday after all and one of our overnight stops has destination charging. Just need to find another overnight with destination charging and we should be able to get all the way to Scrabster with human breaks only.

It would be interesting to see this trip repeated using the Taycan’s battery saving DC charging mode, which I think caps charging speed below 200kW, to see if that make charging sessions less stressful by giving you more relaxation time for food etc

Excellent lights, the best in the business. Though, if in the range/eco mode, they will be dimmed a bit, but can be overridden mannually by a tap on the light switch (out of auto, into manual on low beam).

@@kennyfordham6208 still goes to show just how badly some people shouldn’t be in an EV, if after 2 years a pleb like Macmasters cannot do similar trip then he’s clearly picked the wrong car and doesn’t know how to plan a journey checking which chargers are not working and which chargers charge the fastest and also not trying to charge up to full every time you stop.

I have a Taycan 4S Cross Turismo with 19" wheels. Realistic range is 210 miles. My main problem is that the car rarely "talks" to ANY charger, including my home charger, on first connection when the button goes red. I often have to unplug & retry a few times which is inconvenient at the best of times, but when it's heaving down with rain it's not so great.

I brought a ev a Tesla what I love and mileage is no issue at all but the insurance is awful and even when it needs tires they need special stuff to jack it up and you have to be so careful with a ev not to ground it as you will get a 20 grand bill to be fair from owning one for 30 k miles I think at the min it just easyer in life to have a diesel

Well no I said it’s the first time I’ve seen the Tesla chargers full. And I’ve made plenty of videos about how a Tesla with ccs can use all. In fact the Gridserve is almost same price there anyway and cheaper than many Tesla sites. I’m always complementary about Tesla so no need for any defence

I am slightly confused by this title, didn't Shmee do 660 miles back from the Ring to London on a day anyway, his is a Turbo S so it's slightly less efficient but it was done. I have to admit though EV charging in the South & South East is pretty bad for reliability and I haven't had a great deal of luck with public chargers myself. We fit business and private chargers for among other things and quite often we have to call out the DNO's because of PEN faults of the local grid, many of which are issues of old cables dating back to the war finally giving up which creates problems for the public chargers as well (sadly just decades of no investment and maintenance rearing its' ugly head). I fully expect EV charging to end up on par with ICE vehicles in future for accessibility and also cost but battery tech for cars is about right currently with 300 mile ranges. For our vans though it's insufficient so all the test vans we have had never lead to swapping our diesels. We're hoping the 340 mile range Buzz Cargo next year will change that as due to charging a normal work 8 hour day ends up being 10 on average which would lead to a 4 day week, great in one sense but means engineers are out for up to 12 hours a day which is unfair on their home lives and also customer response time. Thankfully things are improving all the time but I fear Shmee is correct in one sense that the EV age will make cars once again the pleasure of the wealthy with how the government is approaching new taxation measures etc.

Aim restrictions with vans has been a) preserving eight capacity and b) most vans are actually only used fairly low mileage and cannot cost a lot because of huge batteries. But legislation is changing so that EV vans can have a higher gross weight I think. Thing is, as for people who drive for work, you should really only do the same as truck drivers. Max 9-10 hours and with statutory rest periods… which would be charging time. It’ll get there for vans…

@@RSEV That's the problem though, we're not just driving for work. Drive > Site > Drive. So we're not over the driving hour limit but people can already be exhausted. I'm hoping for solid state batteries, lower weight higher density for our county wide fleet. Technology will eventually catch up with requirements.

Yes Charging EVs is still a massive inconvenience EV drivers often show the 1St Charge at 100% and everyone goes "WOW he has a allot of range 😁😍" ' However on long trips only the 1st Charge is at 100% All the other Following charges are less than 50% charges In case of Defective or overcrowded Chargers it can ruin someone's day . Not Everyone can afford £80,000 evs with 90 kW batteries🤷🤦‍♂️

The range is misleading in the taycans, EPA rating is 200, real range is about 250-275. My 2021 model x has a real life range around 280, the Taycan has a better charging curve. The EV cannonball record is in a Taycan for a reason, its the fastest ev for road trips, which porsche markets really poorly. In the U.S. Electrify America isn't nearly as robust as Teslas network yet, but where I live in the Northeast ill be golden.

The final charge was probably as quick or quicker than filling up with petrol once it’s paid for. Seeing all those Teslas charging fills me with a kind of pride. I’ve been driving Teslas for 5 years and in that short time the ICE age is now over. The only people who wouldn’t buy an ev now must be either stupid or loyal beyond sense. Same is said for anyone not buying a Tesla, they really are so much better! The fools who say “I need to drive 400 plus miles every day” are the ones who cause accidents and should be off the road. Great video again. Stay safe. Oh, it’s a bit cheaper too!
