It's funny you say Porsche has never built electric cars before, but Ferdinand Porsche built the world's first electric car over 100 years ago and built hybrid diesel-electric tanks in WW2, he was fascinated by electric power so have the Taycan is just coming full circle and I think he would have loved what they have done and are continuing to do with electric vehicles.

What Robert so sensibly points out is... under normal circumstances. nobody buys any car based on a single feature. In this case, you buy a Porsche for it's road behaviour, not it's fuel consumption or range. I see no criticism of Tesla in this, or a criticism of any other electric car. Those who talk of "Tesla killers" seem to miss this major fact of vehicle purchasing. The sooner discussion of electric cars gets away from people trying their hardest to tear down the whole idea of an electric car, and Tesla in particular, the sooner we might all be able to be able to allow them to be very much a small facet in the background of our lives.

Crazy to think there are electric cars with impressive range that charge faster than most smartphones.

That is what I call dedication. Driving the Porsche Taycan in the pouring rain so that you can charge it up! Robert clearly hated every moment of it. Robert used to be a petrol head, now he is an electron head! Thanks a lot, a video from Robert always makes the day better.

Great video. Both informative as well as entertaining to watch. I have a Taycan Cross Turismo since 4 months and absolutely love it. Fantastic car to drive and charging on Electrify America works well for road trips. As a daily I charge it in my garage 2-3 times per week over night.

What a beautiful car!

I was lucky enough to have a Taycan 4S (93kwh pack) for a couple of days recently. Our company was using it to validate some high powered charging stations in upstate NY. I drove 700 miles in under 24 hours in that car, and it was completely effortless. The fast charging stations in NY and the Electrify America network made it so easy to do. The Taycan was spectacularly comfortable and competent. It also has the best "Guess O Meter" of any EV I have driven, which made the journey that much easier.

I know it falls short of a Tesla Model S on the range and infrastructure point right now but honestly there is not a world where I choose a Tesla over a Taycan. It’s a delightful car that is super important at convincing die hard petrol heads that EVs can indeed be fun. Just think what the cheaper RWD models will be like or the even faster GT line! Also do you really want to bet against VW catching up on infrastructure. I’d bet they are on parity with Tesla sooner than you think

Great work, such a well put together episode. Love the futuristic music. 45 kWh/100 mi ~ 2.2 mi/kWh which is appalling for a city car, but irrelevant for a performance vehicle for the disgustingly rich. Also, another great car producing no toxic fumes or ear blowing exhaust sound to cause nuisance in cities 🥳.

Dream car. I sold my boxster S for my e-golf. The e-golf can outrun and out handle my boxster with 16” bobbley tyres! I do miss the open top car and the roar it made though. The way it gulped down fuel, not so much. The e-golf off the mark is just astonishing and into a roundabout at a tight lick is nifty. If there is an ID.R that comes out, now that would be something. The golf chassis is so good.

test drove a Polestar 2 recently. Planned a journey to Switzerland (from Surrey), where I drive quite often to see my sister, and the journey was 7 hours longer because of charging breaks. I will keep my 530bhp twin-turbo V8, thanks!

Terrific piece from the fully charged show, the original and best. Taycan Turbo has to be the best looking EV yet, although hard to see how one would ever actually call upon those massive disc brakes given the regen capacity at each of the four wheels. Perhaps on a track!

Good story, homey and fun. Robert, you have a way with words. Do I want a Porsche, prolly not due to the fact that I'm older than you and it's a chore crawling down into my wife's XJ6. So something a bit more upright and off-roady (I do go off road now and then), but with the same level of detail, fit & finish would be nice. Also love the no huge center screen. Proper cockpit there :-)

Robert, my first introduction to electrification was a fabulous and highly educational video about Mate Rimac, the Croatian engineer. It’s my understanding that Porsche have bought a stake in his company, which is a technology company.

I love the comment about the uncle at the end. LOL. I didn't know that was a thing in British culture like it is here in Canada and the US. Also, it would be really fun to see a video of you take this on a round trip in Australia. Maybe once things open up again, you can fly back to Brisban and drive a Taycan around the entire island. Coordinate with Porsche Australia and in Germany. Or, come here to Canada!. I'd absolutely love to meet you!

Enjoyed your review. I get 280 miles range routinely with mine. And actually, there was just a video posted with the Turbo S racing the fastest Tesla and it beat it by a good bit.

I'd argue that this is perfect weather for test driving a new EV. Any fool can get fairly good results on a fine sunny day but the likes of a typical soggy good ol' Blighty day is much better for giving a more accurate idea of a car's performance. Fantastic review Robert. 👌

Robert, as always brilliant. I might have missed it, but at what speed were you driving after all? My Model S can really go for 400 miles if I drive at 90 km/h with nice weather and 23/25 degrees (celsius), but the reality looks different... :-)

Turbo S is even faster when turbo kicks in.

Why would you make an video about the Taycan's range en charging, and NOT show the charging curve? Maybe in an diagram or so.. I wonder how long it took to charge to 90/95%?

If I had the money this is the one I would buy. I have been lucky enough to have owned three Porsches in my life, each car was a joy to drive...

Great video. Just a couple of comments though The battery pack in the Taycan has (like you also stated) a net capacity of about 83kWh, even if it has about 10 more full, you cannot charge it full. However Tesla doesn't do it like that, they allow you to utilize much more of it. And the pack you find in the P100DL (and the now Performance), and the Long range (Model S and X) for that matter, has about 98kWh net capacity. That is a lot more, that's 15kWh more capacity you can actually charge. So the big range difference is mostly due to that. And that's a big and important factor. Because the Porsche can be charged to 100% every singe day if you want to. While you can do that in the equivalent Teslas, it's not recommended, you will damage the battery pack doing so. And you're left with charging to something like 80% which gives you just about the same range as the Taycan. Now, when you're going on a long trip, you would of course charge the Tesla to 100%, and get the full range. And then it will obviously have an advantage over the Porsche. The secondary reason the Porsche have a bit less range is those massive tires. The car you tested had 305mm rear tires, and 265mm front tires. Equivalent Model S would have 245mm front tires and 265mm rear tires. And that makes a big difference for an electric car. The Porsche is more aerodynamic but those tires bite it in the ass, in terms of range. And you get even more ass biting when you have to drive on a wet road like you did. I think you found the perfect day to show it's lowest range potential. On a warm summer day, you'll get 300 miles easily. So for every day use, the range will not be a big difference. It's only when you have to go far you will get into a bigger difference. And then it's down to charging speed. And if you're going 300 miles, you need to charge both cars, and then you will use less time with the Porsche. Even if you're going to go twice that, you'll still use less time with the Porsche. Unless you get into a queue, or no chargers available and you need to do a detour. But more and more chargers will pop up in the future, and that should not be an issue. The fastest range car will still be a Model 3 Long Range. With it's 250kWh charging potential, Tesla super charger network, and low consumption. ! And for reference I drive a Model S 100D at the moment, and I have a Taycan Turbo in delivery. I had a Model S P85+ before. And I have tested the Model S Performance (latest model) and the Model 3 Performance. That should be all the cars I've talked about !

Hopefully this will be a vehicle that is on the list for a young driver of the future and excites the next gen of drivers !

These are great days, let’s keep going. I don’t care what the badge is on the vehicle, only that it doesn’t burn stuff, insofar as it is humanly possible not to. Also, I am irrationally excited you guys will surpass 3/4 million subscribers soon. Very interested in the 2021 event too.
