The new Walterdale Bridge is FINALLY open after almost two years of delays! But, oh boy, what a bridge! Let me know what you think of Edmonton's newest bridge.
I took a video of the old bridge, you can see it here:

Well... On this approach, in this light, you can't even see where it's bolted together. It's certainly an impressive looking structure, and gives a nice wow factor coming downtown from the south. Part of me wishes that we'd gone for a four lane, free-flow bridge, with an underpass for QEPR traffic to Kinsmen, getting rid of the lights. Having said that, the intersections at RVR and 97 Ave. on the north side are going to back traffic up anyways. Wish we could do something with the silly hairpin off Sask Drive as well. Gateway sure could use some TLC throughout its length. I guess I'm just becoming an old cynic. lol. One thing. I sure won't miss the grate deck on the old bridge. I always hated that icy-road feeling going across there. Took it one last time a couple of weeks ago.

I agree with everything you said. I still think it would be cool to bury Gateway Blvd south of Whyte Ave, and come out just before the Walterdale Bridge, eliminating a bunch of lights, and the hairpin turn. But it would cost quite a bit, so who knows if it'll ever happen...

This bridge just opened last Monday, so no, you would have gone over a different bridge in August. How did you like Edmonton?

its a amazingly structured bridge with all the cables. it took 2 years to finally complete and $155 milion . not sure what the amount for late fee for not done on completion date was, but it was near $12 million. I am so glad it is now finally being used and will help traffic flow throw Edmonton. We just need to sell trump the old bridge along with the new NAFTA deal.
