Buy your own Rtic Tumbler here: amzn.to/2jWCuUS Just a quick little video of me driving my new project around , only the 3rd or 4th time ever driving a semi . Nothin like the view from a cab over !
For a brand new driver he did just fine. You can't start as an expert. Remember where you came from and lend some much needed advice as opposed to useless criticism. Stay safe everybody.
Bob tailing, start in 4th, skip to 6th, skip to 10th, then to twelfth and hit your splitter into 13th. Hitting all your gears is a waste of time unless your going uphill loaded.
@@Aaronhouston33 I've got to drive a crane with hendrickson rubber blocks in the morning. That's better than one of our other cranes that has a rigid walking beam, no blocks, no springs, nothing. Can only go about 45mph on good smooth roads.
all the complaints... he said quite clearly he had only shifted the 13 speed 3 times before making this vid. then he said several times during the vid he didnt know what he was doing. It's quite obvious he's not even a licensed driver. I think he bought this truck to restore or something. No one has commented yet that he pushed the red knob in with the yellow one... He IS NOT PULLING A TRAILER!!!
To all the people making remarkes of him grinding the gears, he admitted he didn't know how to. Take my advice, if you don't like his shifting or think he's an idiot, then DON'T WATCH THE VIDEO. IF YOU GOT NOTHING GOOD TO SAY DON'T SAY IT AT ALL.
WELL I'VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY!!! When our Model T transmission started grinding, we'd just fill the transmission full of sawdust, and it was all quiet...... So There, Ha! You heard it here first from the World's Foremost Armchair Authority on Sawdust! 🤣😂
Such a beautiful truck. If I were a truck driver; owning one-in any shape it came [they're all nice, that '79-83ish shape anyway], would be something I'd aim for. Can't think of a more beautiful truck actually.
I purchased a 1984 International 9670 with a 13sp Eaton Fuller trans, Big Cam 3 400. I am 49 and have only drove one once, when I was 25 years younger and that was just a block to get fuel, didn't have a CDL yet, that would come much later. I look forward to making some money and memories with mine.
Loved cab overs since terminator 2, im english and i have never seen a truck like that in real life. I would love to come to the states and look at all american cars and trucks, its a dream
That "switch on the side" is called a Splitter! Nice job floating the gears, it's the way it was meant to be driven....and remember, if you can't find em grind em!
everything takes practice you dont get it overnight. .my dad always taught me best way to learn is to get in it and keep doing it and you'll Lea rn it. takes time
Man this brought back a lot of memories. I went to college to learn to be a pilot. I was licensed as commercial/instrument pilot and a flight instructor Single Engine Land. Life happened and 9/11 as well. I took an adult ed truck driving course at a local Tech School and of 8 was the only one to pass the road test first try. My teacher and I became and still are good friends. He offered me a job driving for him that day. I team drove for one week and my co driver quit. I continued on over the road for a year and still keep up the license. I remember learning to shift. My truck was an 86 Freightliner with a big bunk, 3406 Cat and 9 spd RR. No Jake. I pulled a 48 ft steel flatbed. The schools trucks were an old 350 V8 Mack cabover with a straight 5 spd and a GMC Astro with a 3406 and a 13 spd. I really liked the open road and the people I met. Life happened again and for the past 25 years I have owned a cleaning and restoration company like a Serv-Pro. I also became a train Engineer for an all volunteer local tourist railroad. My buddies all want Mustangs, Harleys, Chevelles, ect. I'd like to get a big truck to have as a toy. Nice video. Keep the cabovers alive my friend. My teacher and I occasionally still take working vacations and team drive Maine to California and back to escape. Now we do it with 379 Ext. Hoods 300 "WB with a 110 " Double Eagle sleeper 425 Cats and 18 spd RR dragging a spread air Great Dane reefer. I'm 47 he'll never see 60 again. We have fun for a couple old guys from Maine.
If I ever hit the lotto I'm buying one of these then hittin 231 south from Huntsville, AL to PCB. You used to see a lot more of these on the road in the 90s. Looks like a real beast to tame.
Love cabovers...a single axle is almost as rough as a tandem...but you still get the juice bounced out of you if you’re empty. But nothing like a sharp cabover. 🤩 Bring us some more of it.
Hey friend. You had me cringing when you grinded the gears. I'm a retired otr o/o. My truck also had a 13 speed in it. The trick to driving one is ....let the truck talk to you. You will soon be one with it. My truck was the best partner I ever had. Lol. Stay safe and keep it between the lines.
Old coinchaser im in a 1978 cabover GM detroit 2 stroke in australia. I had very little experience in road ranger box. They threw me in this because no one could drive it and were getting desperate to get it back to work. This is exactly how i describe it. I got in it and nailed it straight away. I feel like it does let me know whats going on and theres a connection there. People think im crazy and i probably am. But its working!!
drm1388 .... Right on. I firmly believe what I said in the other comment. People who don't believe it just doesn't understand it. Take care my friend. Keep it between the lines.
Seeing this truck sure brought back memories. I Learned to drive in a 1986 K100. It was an old Werner Enterprises truck. It still had the bingo stickers on the side of the cab. Love the ole familiar sound of an actual buzzer for low air.
We still make those K-Series cab over here in Australia up to this date , man we’ve got some amazing K-200 cab over , check companies like “Collins “ “Doolan’s” , Collins have a workshop just for detail cleaning they 90+++ Trucks .... they are absolutely immaculately, all Collins trucks looks like just came out of a showroom.... truck drivers put they name on waiting list at Kenworth Adelaide, South Australia just to purchase Collins trucks when he sells them because as I said they are like showroom condition even the ones from 90’s are spotless immaculately very metal is mirror polished, chassis totally clean they colour are “Olive green” but they have a few white and black even silver , but Collins are most olive green it’s pretty hard to top Collins on the K-series fleet , they love they Cab overs K-Series, best looking truck on the planet
Love your truck, I used to drive trucks off and on (International w/13 speed and later a Freightliner w/8 speed, coast to coast rig) a long time ago, and I grew up seeing those cool looking cab overs like yours. Congrats on your project and thanks for sharing, this was fun. Pretty old rig you got :)
You did a great job my friend, we all were once a rookie driver . I went from a 13 speed to an old 1962 B model Mack with a twin stick 5x4 and i had to learn all over again .. lol
Cool video , I drove many 1982 and up Kenworth Cabover 's 13 Speeds back in my driving years ..Started driving Big Rig back in the early 1990's 48 states and Canada , Drove Big Rig up until 1999 that was the last year I drove Big Truck ...Watching your video made me feel like I was back out on the road ha ha
Cab mounts are beat out of it. I had two of those bombs, a pair of 85 K100s.Big Cam 4 350 Cummins /10speeds. And a 1986 Marmon COE Extra length Cab, 3406-B 400,twin turbo, 15speed Eaton Road Ranger, 3:55 Eaton rears. I had a small fleet of 3trucks and 6trailers hired on at George's Chicken. Got a lot of work out of those trucks.
Drove an identical truck for six months in the mid 90's, hauling cattle, potatoes, and gravel. (Same color, even. I think 1/2 of the KW cabovers were brown.) The company switched me into a newer Freightliner when I started running longer loads (still a 3406). They thought I was crazy for missing my old truck, but that thing grew on me. If it would have had a 13, I'd have taken it over the conventional. Not much of a sleeper, but, all you do is sleep in it...
I like the fact your not arrogant with your style... And really Kool to be honest about driving it... I'm a diesel technician by trade... But all my truckin' done around the yard... It took me about about four years before I could back a trailer through any situation... Before that I would be in antsy as hell especially when people other drivers and mechanics looking at me... Anyways nice truck man!
Welcome to trucking. As a new truck owner and driver, "floating" gears is a very bad habit to form. Always double clutch. It will save your drivetrain. Most guys that float gears don't own their own trucks or pay for parts, like clutches, main shafts, bearings etc. If it's a rental, then float to your hearts' content. But, in your own truck... Start in low, double clutch and never hit max revs; which on a 3406 is 1500 rpm. Sweet spot is between 1200-1400. Also, it is illegal to roll to a stop out of gear and you can be cited for violation. Always be in gear no matter what the circumstance. Cat 3406s can roll to a stop without sputtering from 8th on a 13-15 spd by my experience. Good luck!
Dead Eyes I'M a diesel mechanic for a major sand and gravel company we run c15 with Eaton fuller 9 speeds all of our drivers float the tranny and we get quite a few hundred thousand miles out of our clutches all in all it up to how bad you beat your truck's
As the saying goes, "learn to walk before you run..." Grind it 'til you find it by floating is an expensive way to learn compound shifting in "your own" tractor. 21 years OTR super load hauling up to 300 tons, but what do I know...
Beautiful place man ... looks like the Adelaide Hills where I live .... good on ya , I drive a Western Star 2010 18 speed Eaton Fuller I float gears too .
Shifting is no secret, everybody can hear it. ;-) It must be realy work, to steer this truck ... when i see the steering wheel position. It´s one of the best "Ami"-trucks for europe. It´s compact like a european truck, and has the charme of an american truck, like engine sound ... and ... and ... shifting sound. ;-) It must be a special experience to drive such a truck. Best regards from Dresden, Germany. :-)
not to bad for learning my man, my old man taught me 20years ago to drive trucks and I drive for a living now and I still grind gears every now and then. any real driver will tell u the same!
true,I drove a soybean truck and trailor when I was 11,several times unloaded down in Hatchachubee Alabama untill we pulled up and Mr. Taylor was standing there with all at the Farm/Kennel. Somebody got in trouble. Not me.
Cool truck buddy I’ve got one myself don’t push the red knob on the dash unless your pulling a wagon if you do you are just blowing air out the red air line on the back but love the truck and you will figure it out
Damn nice truck man, I've been trucking 16 years and yet to run a cab over, but I want one, especially to hook a propane trailer up to it, that'll be a great money maker there
You'll have a broken back after the first day. There's a reason most truckers preferred the ride of conventional cabs back in the days when both types were common.
Man, those things would bounce around! When I started they had the T valve for changing the range. 13 speeds had a round chrome knob on top with a splitter on the side for Direct and Overdrive. That trans was never designed to go from L to 1st. They would grind every time. They called it granny gear. .
Thanks for your video! I'm glad you took it when you were still learning. It really encourages me to see that you're getting it mostly right already even with only a little practice. I mean judging from the self-described real truckers below, the only thing you have to do different is leave the trailer air valve closed when bobtail and work a bit on the clutching. Then there's trailer backing too but the COE is going to make that easier. This is obviously a machine with some real nuts on it and the clear lack of comfort and convenience features is very appealing. Great color and the proportions are better looking than conventionals, in my opinion. I really want one. Good luck to you sir!
Nice to see someone driving an old legend just for fun, give 'er a little stab when you downshift, other than that you did just fine man :) live and learn ( pretty sure you left your jake on though..it happens ) happy trails and be safe Driver
Not bad man you did pretty good towards the end those 13 speeds are hard to learn sometimes alot of people didnt get it on their first try but you did good
Way to go kiddo you are a certified professional for whatever it's worth. that's coming from a 25 year veteran. Enjoy it while you can. there taking all the real trucks away. My company has nothing but automatics now. Oh how I wish I had my 13 back. Take care.
I’ll give you one piece of advice about a cabover never have anything loose in the sleeper when you tilt the cab up . What’s in the sleeper will come out through the windshield!!
Man l love your ride!!! Have always loved the flat nosed 18 wheelers. I could prob even roll up to the club in one of those. I'd pay the double parking IDGAF :) sick!!!
he had to know that making a vid on driving a truck for the 3rd or 4th time was gonna bring out the Billy big riggers. come on people , he flat out admitted he didn't know what he was doing. think he did fine,he'll only get better.
I drove with 3406's for over 20 years...and I never ran her over 2,000RPM In Hi Rnge I topped her @ 1950 RPM & never downshifted till I was around 1300...@1400 she ain't lugging. That has been the "Sweet Spot" with the 3406B for meLo Range I shifted up @ around 1600-1800.
I have a 1985 KW 90" Aerodyne with a Cat 3406B that I took out the 13spd and installed an Allison HT740. Added 48" to the 235" wheelbase to make 283" to facilitate a 32ft box that I'm converting into a motorhome. 40ft overall.
Good job bro, just like you said you got to find the Finesse between the pedal and the gears. PS the red button is for the trailer. the yellow button is for the tractor. when you are unhooked from a trailer, you only need to push the yellow button in. Pushing in the red button unhooked from a trailer will drain your air supply. take care of her you are driving a legend...
