Broken Bow is a city in Custer County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 3,559 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Custer County.
Broken Bow was platted in 1882. Its name, likely suggested by a settler who found a broken bow in a field at the site of a former Indian camping ground, was submitted by homesteader Wilson Hewitt to the U.S. Post Office Department. The railroad was built through Broken Bow in 1884, and the town was incorporated as a village that same year. Broken Bow was incorporated as a city of the second class in 1888.

My stepfather grew up on a farm in Broken Bow. I’ve always wanted to go there.

My grandparents lived in Broken Bow and every year my family would drive from Los Angeles to visit the Nebraska relatives. My grandmother worked the front desk of the Arrow Hotel for many years. I watched in astonishment as a one-armed cowboy rolled, lit and smoked a cigarette near the town square. I remember the gazebo and the five-and-dime on the square. My grandfather was the Chief Brand Inspector of central Nebraska and he took my sister and I to livestock auctions, which we loved. We also were taken to a slaughterhouse to learn where our food came from. My mother flipped out when she heard where he had taken us that day!

Yes, there were bricked streets back then in that town. My family moved from there in 1984 and I can still remember walking the bricked areas downtown as a kid.
