How to drive safely at night? It’s dark, you can’t see a thing, you’re tired, and any street light or headlight coming your way feels like it’s about 10 times too bright. Yep, driving at night really does test your might! But it’s no laughing matter - being behind the wheel at night is a lot riskier than during the day. Since it’s not like you can restrict yourself to only daytime trips, it’s best to follow some tips so that you can be safe out there on the roads.

SUMMARY:
- Not keeping enough distance is never a good idea, but at night and in bad weather, it’s especially important to leave enough space between your car and the one ahead of you.
- If the driver behind you hasn’t adjusted their headlights appropriately or they’re following too close and their lights are blinding you, just stay calm and, if possible, adjust your mirrors so that their light doesn’t hit your eye.
- If your rearview mirror doesn’t have an auto-dimming feature, then you need to push the little “night mode” tab at the bottom in order to dim the light from cars behind you.
- Are your headlights angled perfectly but still shining too dimly? That usually happens because of dirt and dust, so the best solution would be to buy a headlight polisher.
- Your body needs a break too. Try some stretching to relax the muscles that get stiff from being in the same position for so long.
- Two-lane highways usually have sharper curves and more hills than freeways. Add to this lower overall light and almost constant glare from oncoming cars, and you’ve got a recipe for extremely stressful nighttime driving.
- Fog lights can be useful not only in poor visibility conditions because of the weather, like fog, smoke, snow, or rain, but also at night in combination with the low or high beams.
- Collisions with deer often happen at dusk or at night and are more common than you think. But your high beams can help you spot an animal’s glowing eyes.
- If you wear glasses, you gotta have a special pair for driving at night because ordinary glasses reflect oncoming lights and create an obscuring glare that reduces your visibility.
- If you drive with maximum brightness, it takes your eyes much longer to adjust to the poorly lit road in front of you when you look up from the dash.

Your tips come off as someone who has never operated a motor vehicle. As an experienced defensive driver, let me address each point. 1. Keep a safe distance. Yes and no. Following, for example, 3 seconds behind under ideal conditions, works at any speed because the distance increases with speed. Add additional seconds for poor conditions or larger vehicles, like maybe 12 seconds for a heavy bus or truck. 2. Don't look at light.... Mostly good advice, but it is still important to check on oncoming vehicles on undivided highways and roads to avoid front-end collisions. 3. ...mirrors. Good advice. 4. ...headlights. Good advice. 5. ...snacks and nap. Good advice. Don't depend on sugar and caffeine, because the crash (fatigue) may occur while you are still driving. Stop driving when you get tired. 6. Avoid 2-lane highways. If you are driving on 2-lane highways, it is probably because no better routes exist. The only reasonable way to avoid this entirely, might be to plan those drives for the daytime, but even that is often impossible. 7. Use fog lights even when it's not foggy??? No. This is bad advice and is often illegal and unsafe as it blinds oncoming traffic. Specifically, using fog lights in combination with high beam headlights is illegal and often made impossible by the manufacturer. The only time it can be appropriate is when you are alone on the road, or as the name implies, during fog or extreme inclement weather. 8. Look out for animals. Good advice except for the part about stopping in the middle of the road. Stop in the middle of any highway at night and you will likely cause the death of yourself, your family, the animal, and innocent people who will wreck into you because you are blocking the highway. DO NOT EVER DO THIS!!! Slow down, and pass the animal with low beam headlights, as far away as possible without stopping. Acting abnormally will spook the animal. Stopping will invite an attack during mating seasons. Trust my experience. I have never hit a large animal, but I have seen hundreds. 9. Drive only in glasses with anti-reflective lenses. This is essential. Some people benefit from a yellow or amber tint at night, but with new LED headlights and streetlamps, I am not sure if that is still a good idea. 10. Don't travel alone. I'm not sure about this. It probably depends on your personality and that of your traveling companion. 11. Minimize the brightness on your dashboard. Yes and no. In well-lit areas it can be necessary to have my dashboard lights set to maximum brightness, and I find that I don't have to look directly at the dashboard to monitor my speed. I recommend to use the settings that work best for you and the conditions. 12. Use GPS... whenever GPS won't be more distracting than driving without it. Be prepared to ignore directions when they are unsafe, like changing 3 lanes of traffic in less than a tenth of a mile. Never prioritize not getting lost over safety. Never prioritize ANYTHING over safety! 13. Be careful when passing oversized vehicles. Yes, but we should always exercise reasonable caution around large vehicles, day and night, under all conditions. Remember that being overcautious is hazardous to other drivers. 14. Don't drive at high speeds. Yes and no here too. Drive the appropriate speed for the road conditions. Signal your intentions. Do not make any sudden unpredictable changes, like changes in direction or speed. Never use brakes on an Interstate highway except for emergency situations, when exiting, or when traffic is stopped, not even on steep hills. If you are fearful of road hazards, bridges, tunnels, weather, and traffic, then driving is probably not for you, so let someone else do the driving. An overcautious driver is a hazard, as much as a reckless driver. Driving the appropriate speed is safest for everyone. I know I wrote a book here, but I hope this is useful advice to someone out there. If you are in fact an inexperienced driver, as long as your goal is safety, then your driving will improve every time you go driving. Experience and common sense are the best teachers. Happy trails to you.

I love long distance driving, especially, at night when only professionals are on the road. I live in London. My destinations are Stockholm, Sweden, 1,400 miles, Soke, Turkey, 2,000 miles. I drive these distances almost every 2 months in either direction. 1 Get the car checked before embarking ... tyres, brakes, lights and the spare, not the doughnot, a full normal spare with correct inflation 2 Carry a full 10 litres / 2.5 gallon petrol / gas can. Spare bulbs and fuses. Torch / Flashlight 3 Start you journey after 11 pm when the traffic is light 4 Do not repeat do not drink alcohol at least 12 hours before ...the longer the better. Keep liquid intake to the minimum. I chew coffee beans to keep me awake. I eat chocolate for energy. Avoid carbohydrates that fill your stomach and make drowsy. Bananas are the best. 5 Inform your Insurance company and Auto Rescue Club, if you are a member ...and at least, one more person somewhere in the middle. Inform him/her that you have passed that distance and, at the destination... 6 Don't play any music. Keep your radio /gps on for news ... 7 Fill your petrol / gas tank when it is quarter full. Never let it go empty or on reserve ... 8 Keep a winter sleeping bag in the boot / trunk with extra pair of socks and gloves. 9 Never watch the scenery ... that is for the passenger ... eyes on the road 10.Buy / Install a Garmin GPS. Manufacturers supplied GPS are for the birds. Keep it uptodate 11 Last but not least, do not, repeat do no, doze even for a second that is too long. Stop the car, stretch yourself and sleep. Do not sleep in the driver seat, go to the rear. I drive a Volvo V70 XC, ever since it came out. With Y rating tyres, it is the best.

Bad tip. Fog lights are illegal under normal visibility in many states. They also drop your line of vision far closer to your hood (point of impact). Keep your eyes up and far ahead - and keep the fog lights OFF. There is good cause for them being illegal in normal visibility across many jurisdictions.

Thank you for mentioning the dash lights. I drove over-the-road for 15 years and logged a million miles; far too many times, at night, I've seen cars with their dash lights on full bright, which, as you know, limits the driver's vision of the road ahead... Dim all interior lights. Also, #6: wearing glare preventing glasses - even for people who normally do not wear glasses - is a superb suggestion. Finally, I'm in favor of a law that would require a car's headlights to come on when ever the windshield wipers are in use - day or night. Obviously, many people do not realize that it is important to 'be seen' during inclement weather

An important note about encountering animals at night. Most do indeed have eyes that reflect light giving the telltale "glow". However, moose eyes do not. And their size and weight is enough to total most vehicles. So when in areas where such an encounter is possible slow down, use hi-beams, and pay attention.

IDK. I travel alone a lot for work and never had problems. If you're in an area that unknown to you or you're out in the country it might help to have someone with you, but if you're driving at night on major highways (like freeways) it's perfectly fine. I mean traveling with someone is usually more enjoyable in general because you can have someone to talk to and keep you awake, but it's not a necessity. My biggest tip though is to dim the dash lights so you can still read the dash, but not so they are so bright they strain your eyes. A lot of people leave the dash lights on full brightness and that can strain your eyes on long trips. Especially if I'm driving on the highway for long periods of time, I dim the dash lights as much as I can because I'm usually using cruise control anyway. I mean you should keep an eye on your dash info anyways but it doesn't need to be full blast at night in most cases. But htis will probably depend on your vision too.

The good thing about asian cars and some american cars is that the headlight switch is on the turn signal stalk instead of the dashboard making it easy to reach especially those with shorter arms. The only thing better than that is the headlight switch being on the infotainment screen just like the Tesla model 3.

I would like to add another safety tip. Just because the vehicle in front of you is driving slower then you want to go, DON'T FLIP YOUR HIGHLIGHTS IN THEIR MIRRORS!!!!!!! You blind that driver and could cause them to loose control of their vehicle, not only that, that kind of RUDE BEHAVIOR will make them angry n you could get brake checked n rear end that vehicle in front of you. Be curtious.
@donaldwilliams2721
@donaldwilliams2721 5 лет назад
Linda Everts if you're in the left lane aka passing lane on most freeways you are to pass and move over not stay going slow in that lane. That's why you get flashed. By the way a cop can pull you over for going slow in a passing lane I know cause I thought it was a construction zone and I was going slow and got pulled over.

@@donaldwilliams2721 Thank you. In Europe, they do not have this problem, people learn how to drive responsively. I'm red-white-&-blue through and through, but American drivers (at least many) are the worse. It's simple: "lead, follow or get out of the way"
@foty73
@foty73 5 лет назад
@@donaldwilliams2721 doesn't only happen in the left lane. Ive been flashed in the middle lanes even going 5 miles over speed limit. That's another problem, drivers going 10 miles over posted limits. Cant tell you how many drivers weave in and out going 90.

Wear brown coated glasses...for night driving - reduces lights coming from front and back And wear black glasses for day time - reduces light (sunlight) from front/back They're very cheap and comes in pair (search for driving day n night glasses)

Best Tips. Never plan to drive at Night unless in an Emergency have more distance from the car infront as compared to in day. Rear fog lights really hurt drivers eyes behind you. Always use hazard lights when parked on side shoulder. Never drive with defected headlights. keep your dips low(fullbeam)to when approaching an oncoming vehicle or when behind another car.

When a vehicle coming towards you has bright lights on, do not flash your lights at them because now there are two drivers blinded. Best solution focus your eyes to the right and down. Choose shoulder line or if your in multi lane your line on the right and look as far ahead as possible.

NEVER use your fog lights, unless there’s fog, snow, water or smoke. They just illuminate short distance and give you false feeling that you can see longer, when you actually can’t.
