I didn’t think it was inappropriate though. 9:31 There is no helping people who apply the brakes when they get scared by traffic coming up from behind, except with a bus subscription. You should intuitively floor it, or try to get out of their way, not stop in the middle of the road with your indicator on, begging traffic on the main road to stop and let you in. They are always going to brake when they get scared, even if it increases the danger.
@BenCurrington
@BenCurrington 2 года назад
I'm not surprised to see this location (Queen Eleanor interchange, Northampton) on here, I live nearby and see similar stuff all the time. It's not unusual for someone to drift across the diagonal lines from the left to the right doing forty, so even if the path ahead seems clear to accelerate right up to 60 you have to have your wits about you and be ready to react. Worst thing is, if they just stayed on the left for a few more metres they could move across safely. There's plenty of road available, I don't understand why it's worth the risk. There is an industrial estate and another busy junction up ahead which means the traffic on the carriageway is often slowing down on the approach, so even when someone has correctly matched their speed on the slip road to start with they might be caught out by that. A lot of observation and anticipation is necessary to merge in correctly, more than on a normal junction.
@streetster20
@streetster20 2 года назад
The road sign at 09:07 shows clearly that the left lane continues as a full lane, so no merging required. If they'd have just used the left lane it would've been easier. The van on the main road accelerating could've also done more to help the situation; a) not closing down the space, b) pull out to the right-hand lane, and give them more space.
@TheRip72
@TheRip72 2 года назад
I see lots of drivers accelerate up to 50 then stay stubbornly at that speed as if going faster is more dangerous. It is usually easier to get to 60 then scrub off a little speed where necessary than it is to add it.

Regarding the joint motorways, I’ve seen this many times people sitting at the end trying to join 70mph traffic, I think motorway lessons should be mandatory after passing your test to teach you the do’s and do not’s of driving on them. Even if it a minimum of 5 or 10 hours it’s got to help.

@R04drunner1
@R04drunner1 2 года назад
@@TheCircuitWizard that's good driving: holding back to give yourself space, then using your car's performance to accelerate into a gap at the right speed. I learned that one myself from watching a traffic cop. He was in lane 2 behind a slow moving car on a motorway with a line of fast moving traffic in lane 3. He held back, then when he saw a small gap in lane 3 approaching his position he used the space he had created in lane 2 to accelerate and then merged neatly into the gap in lane 3. Proper skills right there!

Why make motorway lessons mandatory after the test? Might as well make them mandatory before and if possible include them in the test. Can't remember how many I had to do, but when I learned to drive in Germany over 30 years ago some motorway hours (as well as night hours) were mandatory.

I got out on a dual-carriageway once to find someone glued to my tail, after awhile I noticed they were messing about with their makeup but the vehicle was precisely adjusting to my speed changes - I can only assume they were using some form of adaptive cruise control and other assist features though usually those systems leave more distance than that. Near the end of the dual-carriageway there is a quick change from NSL to 30 which they obviously weren't anticipating me to drop quickly down to 30 (most drivers do 40-50MPH still for another 100 yards past the speed change until it drops down to 1 lane).

Like coming into a national speed limit from a 30, it's nice to hear the exhaust and feel pushed back in your seat but it doesn't have to be done dangerously. Wow. I mean this was the most ridiculous driving fails compilation yet. I'm staggered at some of the things I saw. Firstly, the three motorcyclists are trying to steal the title of 'worst road users' from the German Car owners. Those overtakes with the weaving were lethal. Always annoys me how most motorcycles I come across can't stick to the speed limit anyway but that bobbing and weaving just is not on. Number #7 in particular was outrageous, diving into that gap against a caravan? 1 second later and they could've been squished and then a poor driver would have that on their conscience. "Late to their own funeral" - not half! Perfect description for it. Clip #3 - could it have been an instructor late for a lesson? I could see whoever was driving moving their head quite a lot but I didn't see a passenger there. Although ive only seen the clip once so i couldve just missed them if there was one. Clip #10 made me nostalgic for the first lockdown again when people weren't driving around and where the nature was being largely left clean because people couldn't litter. It shouldn't infuriate me more than the other clips but it actually did. Then in the last clip I think the Toyota has its sights set on emerging after the van but, in concentrating so much on the van, loses where the black car behind it has gone and is then too spooked to emerge. All in all, makes for a pretty horrific emerge.

the way those motorcycles are overtaking, especially in clip8, my first reaction was, Keep back... you do not want to drive into the back of the accident this guy is about to cause! (I understand that zoom was used, but my head was still screaming "too close!") in clip 16, I am guessing your viewer stops to check on the driver in the crashed car.... if any damage was done, I hope the video helped him get a "vehicle at fault left the crash site" type claim, because, it's the motorcyclist who caused this crash....
@jamiemorris7688
@jamiemorris7688 2 года назад
To be honest I doubt the insurance will see it that way. Whilst the overtake was dangerous it didn't explicitly cause the crash. The fact the first car didn't crash or react by swerving means the motorcyclist must have returned to his own lane by the point the drivery reacts. From an insurance standpoint the video will be seen as evidence the driver overreacted and crashed to to overcontrol. Of course that doesn't change the fact the overtake was dangerous per se.

I've often thought how pertinent your advice is about using your feet rather than your hands to get out of trouble. Often this means braking and adjusting speed, but that last emerge was a classic case of needing to accelerate your way through, instead, they brake and almost cause a pile up.

The makeup is a classic that I see almost every morning, but the worst one I've seen so far was a guy trying to juggle his mug of tea and his dinner plate with toast on it whilst also trying to steer. He was behind me and we in roadworks on the A14 that narrowed to a single lane which had a 40 limit (they did a major junction improvement), and the road is almost dead straight, but he was having a terrible time trying to keep his car going in the right direction. He was determined to finish his breakfast though and I watched him struggle to multitask until I left the dual carriageway. Why don't people get up a few minutes earlier so they can do these things before they leave the house? I'm sure some people must jump straight out of their bedroom windows into their cars in the morning.

Luckily there was some tarmac runoff on my side of the road I could hit the brakes and drive onto. The BMW in the lane with a red cross actually raises a serious point. And that is that people will ignore a warning if experience tells them that's it's almost certainly a false warning. I've driven on the M25 countless times where the warning info is just plain wrong, or posted so far in advance as to be ridiculous. To be more objective, I've recently been counting the number of times that a "road ahead closed" sign actually meant what it said; out of 33 such signs I've passed in the last few weeks only 2 were actually correct. This is a two way street - if the authorities want drivers to take more notice of their signage then they in turn need to stop crying wolf.

It's not crying wolf. That road is designed to have a one lane "Central reservation" that's movable to cope with rush hour traffic. So the red X nearest your side of the road is red X both ways for safety reasons, so you don't have incoming traffic just a motorway lane width away. So: what happens when you get a moron in that central reserved lane meeting a similar moron coming the other way?

I can’t decide if the car with the L plate is an instructor. It’s got a additional interior mirror but would an instructor have an Abarth ? I very much doubt it's a driving school car - no roof box or decals indicating that. Not sure about the Toyota in the final clip, they have a vehicle on their inside travelling at the same speed, a vehicle tight behind them travelling faster, and a fast van coming up in the lane that’s going to be where they are about to emerge. The car behind discourages back off and let the van go option, They lack the floor it option as it’s a small car, and the car behind them takes the space directly behind the van. They run out of road, and freeze. The camera car is giving them a bit of space but they’re not looking left.

I get what you say about the attempted emerge from lane 2 of the slip, but I think that many people do not allow enough space on slip roads in their rush to get onto the main motorway and get too close the car in front, often it's the same people who cut straight across into lane 3 without any consideration for traffic already on the motorway in lanes 2 & 3. With more space on the slip you have more options and less risk when things don’t go as expected at the merge area. Personally, if traffic is heavy I prefer to emerge from lane 1 of the slip, you normally have more time and space or as in this case enter directly into lane 1.

Clip 21 - 08:55: This is extremely common here in Ireland. I see it at least once per trip here. The other common thing to see is people driving the full length of the onramp and acceleration lane at 40-50 km/h and then attempting to join straight into traffic doing 100-120 km/h. On occasion I have seen them move straight from the onramp to lane 3 at this speed with no regard to anyone travelling on the main carriageway. Makes motorway driving here especially spicy! 😂

2:30 I pray it is not a driving instructor. But regardless, even if it is a family member... they are still passing on these "skills"! This clip helps me understand why driving standards seem to be deteriorating drastically. 4:30 Why must motorcyclists employ unwilling bystanders in their suicide attempts? 9:00 Limited driving ability often goes hand-in-hand with poor confidence (but sometimes also with over-confidence).. I've met a couple of people like this over the years. They panic about driving on busy roads and they hate being anywhere unfamiliar. They become hesitant and will panic easily. It makes them unpredictable and dangerous. I generally offer to drive if I have to go anywhere with these people.

For me the greatest pedestrian problem is those watching their phones not the road then walking onto the carriageway oblivious to the dangers. A lot of drivers insist on completing a manoeuvre even when they have made a mistake. If I am in the wrong lane to make a turn or go ahead I always ‘follow the mistake’ then find a safe place to stop and sort myself out. This comes from the days before sat-navs when you had to stop and consult the atlas! Today sat -navs are so good they can tell you what lane you’re in AND what lane to be in before you get there!
