I think the perception isn't aided by the behind-closed-doors nature of said bollockings. Were there a weekly section on local news saying "and this week, Bobby Plod badge number 90210 incorrectly admonished a driver for speeding due to not knowing how corners work, he was suspended for one week without pay", maybe showing bodycam footage or something, the general public would see "oh hey they actually ARE held to some sort of standard!" As it is now I bet most people, the cammer included, wouldn't even bother complaining about it 'cause there's no point.

And yet this is now the all too common experience most of us have with interacting with police. I've met good ones, but none in the last twenty years. The hiring policy changed. I think these days, courteous, conscientious and principled officers are weeded out at the application stage, in favour of confident, assertive order followers with specific I.Q. ranges. If we had police with principles, they wouldn't obey unlawful edicts from their bosses, like issuing FPN's or arresting street preachers, profiled stop and search , or threatening people with jail for politically incorrect speech. They say a few bad apples spoils the lot, and that's doubly true in the force. If those bad apples are never removed, and we all know that police do NOT grass on their own, then that leaves 'good' officers who are prepared to work with criminals every day. Until I see the scum dealt with, then to me, the rest of you are nothing more than their accomplices, turning a blind eye to the people work with you being villains. I'm sure many police feel like you do, but I've yet to see one upset enough to act. Bad police are hardly ever reported, and when they are, internal investigations invairiably find no wrongdoing. A few of you being above the law makes you ALL rightly hated and mistrusted, because you let them be there. What that officer did was tame, but had the driver disputed his false accusation he'd have been stopped and the police would have gone fishing on him, just to inconvenience him, intimidate him, and exert his power. He's have been I.D'd as a suspected criminal, his vehicle checked with a microscope, and had he continued to insist he was within the speed limit, that officer would have charged him with a crime we all saw didn't happen. No matter who he showed the footage to it would go all the way to court at our public expense, and when shown to be in the right, that officer would not be in court to defend his accusation and no action would be taken against them for abusing their position of authority to intimidate innocent members of the public. So, if police are upset about the lack of respect from the public, maybe, like in this clip, the public are 100% right about exactly how much respect is due. You all wear the same uniform, and you all close ranks around law breakers and psychopaths in your midst, even though you all see what goes on, and you all have the power to arrest these scars on your reputation, so you all deserve the same level of respect. Personally I want the minimum interaction with any of you, even in an emergency. I'd rather deal with it myself, and trust random members of the public than see any of YOUR gang get involved, and it will take one HELL of a police shakeup and a LOT of sackings and at least SOME prosecutions of bad police to change my mind.

@@Asdayasman Sadly my family has had dealings with the Police which shows the standards. If you do go to court, you can't ask for the footage (body or dash), and they'll provide it after proceedings. The footage they do use in court can be edited to their favour, and is fine as its not your evidence. (video it yourself). A complaint against the Police will only go further if the senior officer allows it to go further. Basically a veto. Sadly I'm under South Yorkshire polices 'care'. Their reputation is in the cats litter tray as far as I'm concerned. Hillsborough & Rotherham Taxis come to mind. Dealt with them a few times, otherwise OK, but on a community/city level, its non existence presence, Wild West style policing. I live in Darnall Sheffield, which has the HQ only a few miles away, but I hear far more ambulances than police

If they omit evidence of them doing wrong, that's not surprising, everyone should be expected to do that, as the burden of proof is on the accuser. happens all the time. Once over took a cop doing 30 in a 40 zone. He followed me all the way to my destination, did a full car search, background check, breathalizer, the full works on it because I told him "You were doing 10 under on a dual carriageway. Thats wreckless driving. YOU'RE at fault." For about the next month, i seemed to be pulled over every few days for a "Routine random check." If this ever happens to someone, demand their badge numbers and the reason for them stopping you. THen report them for harrassment by the fourth time.

In which case if two vehicles are travelling side by side at the same speed the one on the inside would move ahead of the one on the outside. For the one on the outside it would have to go faster than the one on the inside just to keep up and faster still to overtake. Not that it matters. The driver did hit 32 for a second or two so the copper is right even if he is a petty prick looking for a conflict.

He doesn't understand he's there to enforce the written law of the land not his own ego.

All good points, but I think it's asking for trouble passing them. Whenever police are doing slightly under it always feels like a trap to me, unless it's on the motorway where they often sit at 55-65.

Traffic cop doesn't even understand the concept of two cars going round a bend at the same speed and the inner car having less distance to travel. Embarrssing.

Maybe the cammer should consider making an official complaint about the Officer’s attitude. Reading other comments on the video, I can see a very negative undertone regarding the police. I agree I think the Officer was out of order with his comments and might have been trying to provoke a situation, which could have led to a booking. Fortunately, the dash cam is without bias and although the Police like dash cam footage of incidents, they need to remember these devices can record their actions as well.

Like the cyclist cycling down a two lane road but with parked cars along his side. A police van clearly close passed, and after he complained, stopped to try and intimidate him, claiming he was riding in the middle of the road and it wasn't a close pass.

this is one of those cases where the dashcam sees more than the driver. Sees the car earlier and sees it unobstructed. It's nose was on the windshield, and mine wasn't. Well not until after the collision.

The reason for the bad view at the junction is the train line that passes underneath at an angle, and that structure to the right is part of the railway. But also there is a lampost on the other side of the junction. I hit that when my face was nestled in an airbag and it was wobbling over the trainline. Arrives the council in superfast time.

Think any adjudicator worth their salt would have found the other driver at fault from photos but was good to have the dash cam. Unfortunately there will always be people who will try to weasel out of fault, no matter the circumstances.

I had similar driving through Wigan once. I passed a police car that was stuck behind some slow traffic. He shot out and raced up behind me. He put his window down at the next lights and went on a rant about how I was speeding and I was I going to calm it down. He was completely hysterical. I wasn’t speeding, I know the road well and there’s a speed camera on it. I would be stupid to race past that. That idiot has shaped my opinion of the police and this was years ago now.

With the radius of that bend it would have been a miniscule difference. To get 1mph diff on 30 mph you would need 3.33% difference in turn radius. Estimating from how long it took him to get from the rear corner of the police car to the front corner he was going 2 to 3 mph faster. And he was getting 32 from the gps for a couple of seconds, although that is also not an accurate way of telling exact speed.

@@davidocall However, passing under a bridge can interrupt the GPS signal and cause a spike in the displayed speed when it regains it. Natural fluctuation in GPS coordinates has had my dashcam show 1 mph when the car has been parked.

@@Kris_M If it's a 3 metre wide lane, then that means a 90 metre (180 diameter) curve will do the trick. That's a shallow curve by UK standards. It would equate to a roundabout with a circumference of over half a kilometre. So, no, it is not a miniscule difference, and I would judge that curve to be on a radius of significantly less than 90 metres.

@@Kris_M should be looking at distance not speed. circumference is measured by pi*d. Lanes are usually 2.5-4m wide. The tighter the curve the more exacerbated the difference will be. on a 100m diameter curve, a single lane of difference will equate to 6% or more difference in diameter. This curve looks close to 50-60m diameter, which means the difference is closer to 10-12%

Also car speedometers are set to show you are going faster than you actually are. By law they must show between 100% and 110% of the actual speed so are typically set at 105% to give some degree of tolerance for tyre wear etc. On the other hand we don't know the accuracy of the GPS speed on the dashcam. There are many factors that can affect that.

@@ditch3827 The GPS was likely affected by passing under the bridge. Briefly cutting the signal will result in a jump in displayed speed when it's regained, it momentarily showing a value higher that the car is actually travelling at. My dashcam has briefly shown over 300 mph in the past as an extreme example of this. I have a 1.6 diesel Focus, so the garage employee driving it at the time didn't actually manage to go that fast.

I had similar once. Passed a copper in a 40 doing 40 he pulled me over for a chat. Funny part was we both set off and both turned in to the same road as the police station was one end I lived the other.

It has to be said that the footage of the police officer abusing his position sounded very much like it had been submitted by a white guy - I thought that this sort of stuff was all to do with race or misogyny and nothing to do with generally being unsuitable to hold such an office, period???? @@cestparti7577 What doesn't trigger a cops ego these days, you can't say anything but "sorry sir" and "yes sir". In a situation that wasn't your fault it's essentially gagging you for no reason. Yeah the video annoyed me but to be honest i do try to defuse, so i wouldn't be risky at all.

Poorly judged by the officer but it really shouldn't warrant a minimum of 1 month unpaid leave. Police should be held to account for abuse of power, but this wasn't an abuse, just arrogance and misreading the situation. Ideally they should be confronted about their attitude here, but saying this should result in that kind of punishment is childish

Completely correct, I have hated them for so much of my life because they are generally the lowest forms of life on the planet with a high viz and a bit of power. It took me having a car accident about 6 months ago and one of my first decent interactions with one to realise they arent all pricks.

It's all about easy prey and revenue raising. I have to say that over the years and especially the last 3 with the covid bs, I utterly despise them.

You can't be sure what speed someone NEXT to you is doing. Slight needle width above limit for nano second.

If you break the law you are not law abiding, just want to be able to pick and choose the laws you obey.

@@cargy930 the part where the speed readout ashley circled read 32 MPH. are you still assuming the drivers claim that his indicated speed was below 30 MPH is not belied by showing an indicated speed above 30 MPH? and again, the fact that he caught up with the police officer BEFORE he went for the racing line while the officer was maintaining 30 MPH by his CALIBRATED speedomoeter and the GPS showed a lower speed indicates either the cammer's speedomoeter was reading low, or it did indicate a speed over 30 MPH. bottom line is: arguing with a cop who gives a verbal warning in passing is almost as stupid as deciding to overtake a cop.

I'm not the cyclist in the video, but I'd have done the exact same. When on a bike, you learn pretty quickly to ride as defensively as possible. A few seconds off your journey is better than a few days in hospital.

Is the speedo on a police car actually calibrated or would it be a standard factory one?

@@123MondayTuesday At one point it was actually calibrated. Nowadays though I doubt it. Various police documentaries show them flying down a motorway at 160 mph (indicated) in factory cars limited to 155 mph by German legislation (so accurately 155 mph). It becomes apparent that this factory limiter isn't removed from police cars when they try to chase down a fleeing BMW or similar. Once they hit their 155 mph limiter, and the police following the same, the police don't gain even slightly on them, but their speedometer still shows 160 mph, just like the civilian cars will. When this officer first joined, they probably were calibrated, just like how the police probably had more powerful engines in the 'cooking model's' body. The last of those was the last Vectra. The police had some estates with the VXR engine, but without the VXR bodywork. The likes of which have not been around for over a decade now.

He was doing 30 mph, only reason he was able to overtake was because he was on the inside of the turn, no excuse from the officer to speak to him in that manner, it just shows even police officers can't handle being overtaken, just like morons in merge in turn situations.

You'd think a police officer would be aware of the GPS vs speedo mph difference, but nah, he was looking for a fight.

As I understand it, the offence is simply to be travelling above a certain speed, rather than to believe or know you are doing so. Unlike many things in law, your "intent" is not taken into account.

@@GeorgeFoot Yes that is true. Although there's usually meant to be a tolerance buffer above the speed limit, probably to avoid disagreements over speedo vs gps vs radar differences. Most places seem to go for +10% + 2mph.

The speedometer has yo show the maximum speed you could be doing. Mine reads 40mph but roadside speed displays show 36-37mph.

I think all video cameras can pick up infra red light - you can try it with your TV remote if you have a camera - I haven't tried it with a phone, bit it should work

I've heard the following suggestion for motorbike filtering (lane splitting) in the UK. But the way I commuted on a dual carriageway, was just to rejoin the queue if it reached 20 mph. Hand covering the brake lever too. If a gap appeared, I expected someone to move across suddenly. "The 20:20 rule - filtering safely There is a school of thought that says filtering is safe as long as the traffic you are overtaking is travelling at no more than 20mph and you are overtaking them at no more than an additional 20mph. This rule will cap filtering speeds at 40mph and it is thought that the police will not intervene with anyone filtering at that speed. Again, however, it is worth stressing that this is a school of thought rather than a hard and fast rule. If a police officer determines that you are filtering unsafely, carelessly or too quickly, you could still be stopped, even if you haven’t broached the 40mph limit."

What are the chances that the HGV driver beckoned them to cross? Since watching this channel for the past year I've stopped all flashing of lights / waving on / encouraging others to move. I had a habit of just looking forward and signalling for them to go, without looking for dangers behind.

I first took driving lessons in 1997. For a variety of reasons, I didn't pass a test until 2010. I only heard the term 'merge in turn' last year watching Ashley's videos. None of the instructors I drove with used the term, my copy of the Highway Code doesn't include use of the term. To drivers of my age then, it's just pushing in. I don't think it's not being able to grasp a concept, it's that no-one told us about the concept to start with.

Consider this: Have they've gone over the speed limit yet claim their speedo is reporting below the real speed? So yes, by inference they've accused the officer of lying? They're saying I was doing 30 when I overtook you, not more. But they actually say I was doing 27 because my speedo showed 30? So to overtake the cop car by inference the cop car was doing around 24 when they overtook? The officer claimed to be doing 30 and they've said, basically, no it was 24? They didn't say my speedo showed 33 but is actually 30, why not?

It's peasant mentality, something like we all must queue an equal amount of time, and I got here first bs. Just view them with the pity and contempt they deserve.

It's always just best solved by yielding to any helmets that think they're entitled to go first. Denying them their petty ego boost is simply not worth the hassle in dealing with them or potentially causing an incident.

@@artemkatelnytskyi Plenty of signs saying MERGE IN TURN or USE BOTH LANES in recent months, at least in my area. Idiots still don't, and some actively try to block others from using all the space.

and I wouldn't have overtaken him to begin with. and if I had been so stupid as to decide to overtake, my response to being called out would be, "sorry, officer, my speedo must be reading low." the expression one of my local officers taught me for that scenario is "he talked himself into a ticket"

I used to commute past the end of a runway with those warning lights (33 years of it). One day they did not come on and a military aircraft passed over me with about 5m clearance, that's a surprise when it happens.

All he had to say was, "mind your speed mate, my calibrated speedometer has me doing bang-on 30. Have a good day." Or just let it go -- in the grand scheme of things it was nothing. Meanwhile, there's hundreds of clips uploaded to RU-vid of drivers dangerously jumping red lights or doing other completely insane nonsense that doesn't get prosecuted.

@@defragsbin Exactly, and at most he nudged 32 for a second, certainly not enough for the copper to even notice, probably didn't even hit 32 due to inaccuracy of GPS. Just a copper who got hurt by being overtaken, a common occurrence of some moronic road users.

That is one of the lowest I have seen. I used to go past a small airfield daily that did sight seeing flights. When the wind was in the right direction I tried to time my journey to coincide with a landing 👍 Something graceful about aerodynamics in action

The A490 at Welshpool airport can be like that (great butties in the airport cafe, btw). There's a place near me called Came Down. No airport though, that would be the icing on the cake.

@@smilerbob they don't come in lower but the planes are a lot bigger coming in low over the A38 at Bristol Airport. Also some Heathrow landings when the wind is easterly(?) over the M25 can be pretty low.

The inside lane of a bend will overtake a vehicle on the outside lane of the curve if they're travelling at the same speed. This is school sports level of understanding which the copper should know about. That's why the overtake only happened on the right hand bends and the relative speed dropped off on the left hand bends. No-one's saying the copper was lying, that was an inappropriate response, but I do believe he was mistaken. That notwithstanding, I've met enough bolshy coppers not to bother overtaking them unless they're obviously driving well below the limit. It's always their word against yourn.

Im not 100% sure, but i recall that speedometers in cars are required to be calibrated such that they can never show a speed slower than what the car is actually doing (as speedometers are never 100% accurate)

I wonder how evidentially sound a dash cam's coordinates, let alone speed calculation, are in court, especially around flyovers interfering with line of sight and changes in elevation affecting overall positioning. In the open they're pretty good, but on the flat with cruise control on I still often see mine flicker +/- 1-2mph of my speed.

Also don't forget the speed camera vans on the bridges. Comfortably drive along with cruise control at 70, spot the van on the bridge umpteen miles away (in most cases they are veeery easily visible) and prepare to brake. Lo and behold, a few hundred yards or less before the bridge with the van a sea of red brake lights of cars braking down to 65 or even less after flying past you (and most likely already having been caught by the speed camera) well in excess of 70 just a few seconds earlier.

@@PedroConejo1939 Very true, but I would say the cammer was starting to catch up during the left part of the turn (could be the police car slowing or a true increase to 32mph…we will never know without long gone data from the police vehicle) made to look worse during the right turn phase, from what I could tell. Many are commenting this, but he was going 2 to 3 mph faster which cannot be accounted for by a turn with that turn radius.

@@Kris_M While the GPS briefly (approximately 1 second) showed 32mph, if you think the GPS is accurate on a road with that many twists and turns, you're mistaken.

@@cargy930 It showed 32 twice, and I was using the time he needed to pass the police car to be indicative of the speed difference, not the indicated gps speed.

@@cargy930 I've put that in another comment. He passes 4 meters of the police car in 3 seconds. That's 3 mph observed difference, of which 1 mph is gonna be from the smaller turn radius for the inner lane.

Street lights, no repeaters - the only safe assumption is 30mph.

The conversation seemed to suggest 30 mph was the limit. The brief display of 32 mph needs to be taken with a pinch of salt though as they were passing under a bridge at the time. GPS speed displays like those used by dashcams can indicate a momentarily higher speed than is actually being driven at if the signal is interrupted by anything, like a large structure of concrete and steel. They could have been at a consistent 28 mph through there but the GPS signal dropping out caused it to calculate the speed from 2 coordinates further apart than they actually were for the same time elapsed.

I long for the good old days when you knew exactly where to look for a vehicle's front indicator: From about 1976 on, it was almost always on a vehicle's corner. Now, it's anyone's guess.

So why bother provoking him? The police car was travelling close to the limit, the cammer obviously wasn't prepared to overtake him, so he sat in the blind spot like a berk achieving nothing except annoying the copper..

@@davidjones332 Provoking the copper in to slowing down? Apart from a couple of jumps above 30 on an imperfect measure like speed cam GPS the guy broke no laws. Then when the guy was showing sub 30 on the GPS, the cop was still falling behind. So the Cop exaggerated the issue just to have a little "i am" moment. People like you are why the cops will just pressure the average person because you just cede to the smallest presence. They need to learn they are here to serve us, not have a little rant for a micro aggression.

Police vehicle speedometers are actually calibrated. It is probably all software tweaks now with digital cockpits, but for the dials components in the cluster were swapped and tuned/measured to be within a much tighter tolerance.
