10:27 , This country style, open air restaurant reminds me of the one I stopped at for breakfast, years ago, when I was driving back to Bangkok from Chiang Mai. The eatery was on the side of the highway outside of Lamphang, if I remember correctly, complete with a music jukebox that had selections of Thai & English language pop music, as was a common feature in many of these roadside eateries.

Loved the adventure, loved the philosophizing, and discovery. Not just a food video but so much more.. Well worth the effort. Thanks so much Adam for the reminder of what I had always loved but had forgotten in my life.

I would be thrilled to get to that lake with a telescope! I'm not only a foodie but also an astronomer and I can only imagine just how dark the night skies must be there. It would be like going back over 150 years in New England with no lights around from cities or houses. WOW! Maybe some day I can get there and enjoy the food and the skies.

You sure know how to make food travel videos. I just love the hooks you've inserted to keep the interest of the viewer intact through the entire length of the video. Our teacher was just telling us about these hooks the other day, but it's only after seeing your videos that I began to understand what she meant and why it's so important.

Nice video! Do you happen to know the current situation in Myanmar for international tourism? I would love to go but info is difficult 🙂
@OTRontheroad
@OTRontheroad Год назад
Thanks! So from the best we can figure- Yangon is still open and safe for travel. A few tourist-focused cities are also most likely OK. But it's completely off limits to get out in the countryside or visit most of the country at this point. For example we'd love to visit Shan state but that's not an option right now. Re: coming from Thailand, the border we visited was "closed" though it seemed more of a theoretical border crossing. As far as I can tell, there are currently three land borders from Thailand still operating, but visa must be arranged in advance.

I wanna give some info about Myanmar that it is totally unsafe for all of the tourists and Citizens because the soldiers of the Junta are really out of control in their mind and they opine that they can do whatever they want to ,even shooting and torture to every one unconditionally. This is the real fact about the current situation in Myanmar(Burma). This is a country with the beauty of nature and you can enjoy a lot of delicious Myanmar Foods and friendless of the people of Myanmar after this cruel Military coup. You are welcomed to explore around Myanmar like Loikaw, Hpa-an, Myitkyina, Laiza, Chin state ,Mrauk-Oo, Bagan ,Monywa, Mawlaik ,Magway region and many other aesthetic places. We Myanmar people and our legitimate Government,NUG and EAOs/ PDFs are struggling to overcome this crisis with concerted efforts and we hope to get Democracy back very soon. So, after this situation we want to invite you to visit Myanmar and enjoy the stunning spots of our country. We will never be hesitated to help all of the tourists...😇
@wendyhla7097
@wendyhla7097 Год назад
Yes, Myanmar is totally unsafe right now for tourists. There are a lot of internal conflicts between the military regime and the local residents/villagers in major parts of Myanmar where the regime burn down houses/villages of local residents and even burning human beings alive. Our country’s plight is not known internationally as the news media is oppressed here.

You're never nowhere. There are no rules. "Follow your nose" means not just to follow your olfactory sense, but to just go. No preconceptions means no misconceptions. I have found unbelievable and special places and people by doing just that for decades. That being said, the food and the experience and the people were worth the journey, and made me jealous. BTW, I did find a history of Southeast Asia that's robust and factual (and dense), and I'm enjoying it in daily bites. The book goes into as much as is currently known about the region, detailing the early native peoples, the ethnic and cultural influences from both China and India, and even Turkey and what we consider the Middle East (and later Europe and the Americas). It discusses the natural resources, vegetable, animal and mineral, as well as the migrations, the foods, the agricultural situation, the natural disasters, the invasions, the religious practices and religions, and just about everything that went into what we currently experience of the region. And I'm only into chapter four of twenty chapters! The later chapters bring us closer and closer to the current day. Title: A History of Southeast Asia", author Anthony Reid, in the Wiley Blackwell series of Histories of the World. I recommend it if you haven't found anything else which provides such an all-encompassing view. PS - hope you enjoyed your short break from producing new content, but keep it coming......and follow your nose.

What was your trick? I'm really good at quitting. I do it all the time. Hah....honestly I'm usually pretty good about not smoking during the week- then filming and edit day, the stress and constant pressure just brings it right back, and I end up rationalizing it as well, I'd rather just de-stress and have a good shoot

@OTR Food & History @OTR Food & History My secret...I had a son (Thai mother) who I separated from when my son was only two. From that point I had him full time as a single father. When he was 4, I developed a persistent sore throat and was quite certain I had cancer. That stopped my smoking instantly. It turned out I did not have cancer but I had quit for 5 days when I found that out, something I had never been able to do in 30 years so I decided that was it for me..I wanted to see my son grow up. In about two weeks it will have been twenty years since I quit. That's my secret, fear and love. I'm at home recovering from Covid right now and my discovery of your channel has helped a lot. In three days I've been through pretty much every one of your videos. It's all really excellent work. I especially enjoyed your history of Pad Kapow, something I now only get to eat once or twice a year when local Lao farmers make Bai Kapow available, though I have to drive an hour to secure it. No Thai restaurants worth eating at near me, even though I live in California. I had pretty much given up on restaurants for Thai food anyway as they are almost invariably a disappointment. Thankfully, having visited Thailand 7 or 8 times and having been married to a really good Thai cook for two years, I know what the dishes I like best are supposed to taste like so I just figured out how to make them. I'm excited right now because the hot weather is arriving and soon I'll be able to make a batch of Neua Dad Deo, another of my favorite things to eat. Anyway, keep up the great work and I'll be watching for more wonderful content from you.

Why did you expect conflict while traveling through Africa, but was shocked by the danger and conflict in Asia (Myanmar). Are you views and expectations influenced by the media and historical biases?
@OTRontheroad
@OTRontheroad Год назад
Well- certainly the media never gives a fair shake to Africa. It's a complete blank spot as far as the western world is concerned, and that's totally unfair. I'm really hoping that in time, if the channel succeeds enough to have the budget to push outside our region here, I'd like to do a long series on the food and culture there- honestly, Daria and I considered moving there (Uganda specifically) when we left China, but it was hard on short notice to organize visas for ourselves as well as legal transport for the dogs. But I wouldn't say that our expectations were different regarding Myanmar. It's similar in that the only thing we really know as outsiders is the war and danger and corruption, not the food and culture and everyday life. To me, it's a fair comparison- both (Myanmar, and much of Africa) is shown as a strictly one-dimensional thing in the news, and that's not even close to reflecting reality.

I love your videos so far. The editing, the way in which you interact with the people around you. I have to say just ONE thing though, and I don't wish to be too critical, but it's extremely disconcerting, here in 2023, to see you casually puffing on a cigarette every other scene, even as you're narrating. I can only imagine this time it was a kind gesture by one of your newfound friends.
