UB, Fairbanks is a great city, been here for 27 years. The winter is tolerable and the summers are great, especially if you don't like the heat =) Sure there isn't a lot of sunlight in the winter (this video was definitely taken in the 11am-2pm time frame) but when its warm, its always light. FYI, anyone that has spent time in Alaska knows we dont have Snowmobiles. ;)
I went on holiday from England to Key West Florida a couple of years ago. In the hotel bar one night, we had a few drinks and a chat with a couple from Fairbanks Alaska. Ever since then I’ve been looking at videos of the place! This one is very interesting thanks 👍
I lived in Fairbanks for 30 years. The land of extremes. In the eighties, I often saw over 2 weeks that never warmed up above -40 below. Sometimes several days of -50 below. Then, when it warmed up to -30 below, it felt like a heat wave.
It looks magically beautiful. In Illinois, this only occurs maybe once or twice a year, every other year. I live for these days, spend 2 hrs trying to get the car started, and be the only crazy one on the road. Drive past cars buried in the snow, get to town to find out everything is closed.. Good Times! Great Video!
@@thebanksfilms4426 trust me the weather BARELY makes all the crazy ass people hear tolerable. Have you ever noticed the meme "A Florida Man"??? If you move here move go North or south central Florida like Lake, Marion, Polk, etc but even those are being built up at a insane pace. Just come visit for awhile then go back up there. I would warn you about the mosquitos but I've seen what summer looks like up there and yall got us beat.
Micheal Vincent yah we were looking at the Tampa Bay Area. Definitely not further down. My dad lived down there for a summer and he just remembers the bugs and the humidity. The mosquitos here suck, but I also used to live in south Texas so heat isn’t a deal breaker. But 23 years in this cold is enough for me.
Back in 1982, I was in the US Army when I was transferred to Ft. Greeley, AK. I drove up there in a soft top Jeep and that's what I used during the first winter. The lowest temperature I drove in was 70 below or some such madness. The heater kept the inside of the Jeep to a balmy 0 degrees, and my wife was always ready with the ice scraper to scrape off the inside of the windshield so I could see (the defroster was a joke). After that winter I sold the Jeep and got a van. No, I don't miss shaking a thermometer at 70 below and hearing the frozen mercury inside rattle around...
Winter or studded tires are not mandatory in Fairbanks. However, when it is this cold the roads are not really slick. Ice is really only slick when you have enough pressure or high temp to form a water layer on it..Its too cold for that. Just like we don't generally use salt on the road....its too cold for that. We use 3/8" crushed gravel, which is most likely why the poster has a chipped and cracked windshield, just like most of us in Fairbanks.
Meredith McMahon Bro I miss the sams club there 😭😭😭 I remember always hangin out with my friends in the deli eating that good azz pizza, the new costco there is alright tho but it ain’t no sams club
For those who don’t know, (I bet this guy knows already) Put some blizzaks tires on, cover that grill, make sure u got the proper oil and antifreeze and you’ll be fine. Make sure you plug it in at night to keep the engine warm and maybe even leave a space heater to run inside. I worked in North Dakota for years as a truck driver and it was -44 the worst I seen. It’s doable just have to be smart and prepare.
George Calatean I’m in devils lake and I’m out there in -30 below cranking my rust bucket truck with bald tires. It’s honestly not as bad as u think it would be
I live here in AK. Smart people do not drive at -50. Door sticks and you give it a yank? You are now holding the broken handle. Get a flat tire or break down on the hiway. You can die. Denali Park employees are not required to go to work when it is -30 or colder. I'm not sure about other government employees.
I live for this kind of experience. We don't get anything close to this in Texas but there's something pleasing about the cold darkness where you and your vehicle are pushed to the limit that intrigues me
I was there in December 2003,IN FAIRBANKS was 43 Down 0 , Estaba muy Frio, I love ALASKA IM FROM ZACATECAS MEXICO THANKS , MY INGLISH IS BASIC TO WRITE
I was in Fairbanks, in December, in the late 70's. I'm surprised they have a Sam's Club and a shopping area like down in the 48. I don't remember any such things then. I was SHOCKED at how cold it get's in Fairbanks (and I live in Wisconsin). I've NEVER been so cold in my life! In the USAF, in upper Michigan, we were REQUIRED to show evidence we had survival equipment in the trunk of our car when we left the base. I HOPE you guys have such up there in Fairbanks.
A very pleasant conversation between the two of you. You guys sound like my wife and I. We've been married for 38 years. It's freezing outside but we can get cozy after.
Ah Fairbanks, I served there in the U S Army from June 1977 through December 1978. Ice fog what a mind blower for a kid from S Fla. Super short days in winter and day round sunlight in summer. I'd love to visit again just to see all of the changes. 🤣
It is, i had to put on chains for like 19 mins and my legs dtarted freezing then had to take em off but one side didnt want to some off, after i got it off the car tire my fingers were red and i could barely move em
@@maggie0285 go ahead and call 911 for a tire change you will get a big ticket and you will go to jail for miss use of 911.. cop's got better things to do you know.. ike arresting thieves and killers..
My husband and I are trying to move away from Fairbanks. Came up here to build his career. Been here for 10 years. Crime is going up, budget cuts and government offices closing down and cutting educational programs (including college). Extreme winter where it hurts to even go outside. Kids want to go out and play outside but theirs no park, no comfort of outside for months. We want to live a more active lifestyle that we are use to living back in Oregon. Hiking every day of the year if we want to, camping, going to the beach, downtown of the city, going to an actual mall, having water parks, and more places to have fun in general (rather than just bars... and Walmart/Fred Meyers to go to) Yeah. Fairbanks has some beautiful things for sure! But just to visit. Not to live here for the rest of your lives! Ugh that’s depressing lol ahaha life is more than having 2 months of summer! And far more places in the world are more beautiful than here. The cons def our way the pros for this location. Atleast for us because we are def NOT home bodies! We always want to be outside and we can’t living here. It hurts your face too much and is uncomfortable with gear. I rather live somewhere where I only need to put some flip flops, shorts and tangtop and roll out of the house. Just saying.
Joanna King Come live in Houston, it never gets cold here! I think if you love warm weather this city is perfect. You can get large cheap housing and great food.
I was born and raised in Alaska. I drove for rideshare companies and any out-of-state-r was surprised I drove so aggressively/confidently ( I was 21-22 at that time )
back in the 70s, all the diners gave you free coffee when it was 50 below. Wonder if they still do that. This also had a law that if you came on a disabled vehicle, you had to stop and offer assistance. That was of course long before cell phones and the like.
@@ak_downrange_threat7251 may I ask if the temps are -50, -40, - 30-20...do schools close on those days?..do restaurants close early and work places? And stores?... thanks!
@@lydiapetra1211 Schools close at -60F, When I was in School here, I seen it 4 day total. If your car wont start, that is a valid reason for a Sick day up here. As far as -40 goes most cars are winterized and do fine at -40 because we plug our cars in(3-5 Heaters) -20-30 is nearly all winter things don't stop or slow down for those temperatures.
Watching from Britain, amuses me when we get like 2 inches of snow the entire country comes to a grinding halt and yet Alaskans are just getting on with their day as normal! Would love to visit Alaska one day! Maybe when it's summer and enjoy the lovely mountains view.
the difference in how people respond to snow is wild, having moved from oregon to alaska. in oregon, you get 4 inches and everything shuts down. in alaska, it’s 40 below for days on end, or 4 feet of snow in a month, and people just keep on trucking
-52F in fairbanks was not that bad. -38F in Duluth MN just about killed me! I can do a dry cold all day but a wet cold? Its a million times worse! I actually want to move to Fairbanks. I loved it last winter when I was there 2years ago.
cwwjr1681 Hey buddy , I totally agree, Fairbanks is a dry cold , would rather be in Fairbanks at -30 below instead of Midwest with 30 degrees and wind Thanks for watching and hope you’re subscribed
Yeah I feel like coming from Wisconsin Alaska wouldn't bother me too much. Today in wisconsin it was like 39 and o personally feel that's warm for january but I'm sure it wasnt a dry cold. The great lakes I think keep it humid. (I think)
I can't even imagine living in temps like that. You two are tough and sound like a very happy couple. Good stuff! NJ here and I hate the cold we get here. Thanks for posting that vid. I'll remember it when I complain about the cold here.
Thanks for sharing this! I lived in North Pole AK on Lana Turnabout for 8 years back in 87 - 95. I finally just got tired of the long cold winters. One January it never got warmer than -50 below for the whole month. I was in the Air Force and supporting the Army. We once went out to the Tanana Valley during the winter and actually experienced -81 below. We had an Air Force weather person with us that had the equipment to measure real air temp. I really love this area in the summer time, except some years their are too many wildfires and the area then stays smoky. That really sucks in the summer when that happens. I do go back to Alaska every year now, but mostly stay down in Kenai/Soldotna.
I live in Tok and have a serious disease. We drive up to FBX in every kind of weather. If you are observant, patient, build time into your schedule and pack for EVERY situation, you’ll be just fine. It’s been a while since we’ve had a true cold spell. January was our last really cold stretch. Our school and buses in Tok do not shut down for anything, ever.
@@williammartin371 they been all over last few months, can not find the story were one was found do the road from me, west side of the state, I seen one down the road less than a year ago
I live in Anchorage, it doesn't get as cold as it does in fairbanks, but after living in Anchorage for 20 years, it really doesn't feel cold after living with it for so long. Funny story when I visited Arizona phoenix to see family I was wondering how people could stand the heat! It's really hot there!
I agree. It's too hot in Arizona with temps up to 120F during the summer. It must have been the weather to drive me to do this, but I'm now going to Fairbanks during the winter for vacation to feel another weather extreme.
I live in Maryland and want to go to college somewhere down south, maybe Florida. It doesn't even get that cold here (coldest it gets any given year is like 0-5 degrees with -5 to -10 windchill), but I can't stand it. I've tried to give the cold a chance but I hate it unless it's snowing and I'm wearing 5 layers and sledding or playing snow football with friends. That said, Florida and warm/humid places in general aren't for everyone and I get that. I will say though I'd love to go ice fishing in the Great Lakes or somewhere up north.
It looks so beautiful ! I’m originally from jersey but my family & I moved to Florida in 2004 & still live here, currently it’s 57 degrees at night, I wouldn’t move to Alaska but back up north to jersey or ny to experience all 4 seasons again
It is amazing how much traction you get at -40 or so. I lived in Fairbanks when I was a kid, in Island Homes, loved every second of it. I am still trying to find childhood friends Smokey Norton and J E Leacock.
It's been a dream of mine to get to experience -40 or colder, and I hope to get there sometime in the next few years. When I was a teenager I was in Anchorage when it was -3 F, and I was super excited, but this would be really awesome.
Cam Rocket that shit is untrue af, don’t listen to mofos in the lower 48’s actin like they know what it’s like up here, what y’all be smoking, you got Compton, Detroit, and Atlanta down there where pretty much everyone’s homeless or poor
For someone from Maryland who hasn't experienced super harsh winters, it's very interesting to see how locals talk about the weather there. "Warming up to -12" is such a wild statement for someone who has never even seen such cold temperatures! But just like any climate you get used to it, and I'm sure you have lots of experience driving in snow and ice fog. It feels fast to me but in the same way someone from the country would see how I drive in the city where I learned to drive and be surprised
Ahhhh, what a great ending to this video, "The worst is when dogs that are chained up are eaten by wolves because they can't get away" O_O. But great vid other than that lol. Idk why I need to watch these though, I live here lol.
I have a awd dodge charger and I don't even drive that fast on snow you never know who has to instantly break always drive carefully and keep your distance and break ahead of time when you coming to a stop
beautiful feeling watching you drive and talk thru the snow. That is a clean garage. Must need a clean garage to keep your vehicle in, so to be able to start the car in warmth.
this exactly why I use mobil 1 in my car it pours at -40 with no problem, better than any other I've seen on the market. back in the day it would take 15-20 minutes for a quart of regular oil to empty from its container if was left outside at these temps
Now that's cold! As a wisconsin native now living in florida I can attest to some cold winters - not like that though. I bet the summers are gorgeous however.
I like how he says that people with 4wd are driving to slow. No one has the right to say that someone is driving to slow with those road conditions. If they wreck their the ones who have to deal with it not you.
Betty Weber - Anyone who has lived here for any amount of time knows you don’t drive in 4WD unless you absolutely have to. You drive in 2WD and only use the 4WD to get out of slick/deep situations. Driving on snow and ice in 4WD at speed only means that ALL your tire will break free and REALLY bury you in a snow bank. At which point your 4WD is useless.
Oh ok. Man i just miss that place. The one we had in town here in sc closed probably around 2008. I still have my old blockbuster card. Idk why but i had to keep it lol.
I love fairbanks!! I was there in last december and it felt good to get away from the city(Cali)... we got to see a very dim lighting of the Aurora. Hope to visit again soon!
I was in Chicago in the 1970s when it got 28 below and thought I would die getting to work. I was feeding feral cats putting out hot water helping it wouldn’t freeze before they got to it.
I’m a Midwestern guy who recently moved out west after 40 years of living in the same state. It’s funny to me how all the homegrown west coast people shroud themselves in blankets and hats and winter coats, even as early as SEPTEMBER. I always thought to myself, let me bring them to Chicago for a few winters and give them something to be cold about. But even this is too much. 52 below? I don’t think I can handle this one.
The cracked wind shields are a thing there too. The super cold temps make small chips grow fast. I grew up in fartbanks and love it there in summer/fall. But winters are brutal and boring as hell.
As a fairbanksian, you really wouldn't, nobody here does. -50 is beyond cold, it's freezing. If you're not wearing full winter gear at this temp (a winter coat and snowpants) you will be chilled to the bone within a few minutes. Even moreso if there's any wind at all.
Don't know why my parents moved here, but I was born here so I didn't really have much choice. I've only been old enough to live on my own for a few years, but at this point it's normal to me. If I had to choose I prefer too cold over too hot anyway. Also it only really gets this cold a few days a year and anything down to -25 isn't really that bad.
CB's...Citizen Band radios were a fad in lower 48 in 70's...a necessity in Alaska...I was stationed at Eielson AFB in 73-74...a great assignment ! I want to go back soon for the memories...I know it has changed a lot.
I like this video. Its like, that I drive the car. I hope you can understand me, my english is not so good, I am from Vienna-Austria. And I like Alaska. If you have more of this videos, I want to see it. I have also videos of my car-drive. I was driving in lower Austria, styria, Vienna and Serbia, Hungary. Greetings from Europe. Alaska is sooooooooo beautiful, I love it. I want to see it
Id hate missing my ride home from work in that temp, it would be a death sentence i wouldnt leave work

Lived there from 60- 64. Saw the Kennedy assignation coverage, the English rock and roll invasion all on my family's black and white TV. Also experienced the earthquake. I didn't mind the cold in the winter, but hated the hordes of mosquitos in the summer.
