Hello Everyone! Welcome to Fairbanks Alaska my home sweet home. Join me on my trip back home to see what goes on when temperatures drop below zero :) #alaska #alaskalife #alaskalifestyle
I was born in 1944, West Central PA when winter weather and temps. were much different from that of today. Receiving snow for Thanksgiving and lasting until March of the following year was common. Winter temps. frequently were below 0F to as much as -40 F even up until the mid '50's, as I recall. Heavy snow in and around 1950 where I could not see over the path shoveled by my father to the barn. Then, in the mid 70's, we had some cold weather that again brought temps into the -40's. All that is memory now with nothing that 'drastic' anytime recently, ie, since 1979, as I recall. Some really deep snowfalls, but no really low temps. Just saying...
Nice video! I saw a Bus so am I correct in assuming that there are Bus stops? Who would wait for a Bus in 30 below weather. I live in the North East which the temp can drop to like 5 above and that's Super cold. I can't imagine being outside in 30 below weather!
I had to stop watching after 7 minutes, it is a good video and nice your hanging with your dad...... but to constantly turn down the volume because the music is over layed to loud and turn it up when your talking, it's annoying.
Ages 6 to 12 there. I was outside, for a very short time, in -70F. One time it had been -40 for almost two weeks straight. Then in was suddenly +17 and the parents had to grab the kids and make us put on more than a tshirt. It seemed like summer had come! This is where my Mom learned to do dog sledding. Mush, you huskies!
This winter we had 2 weeks of high -30 low -40, water pipes bursting all over the city! You know they’re a local wearing shorts at 0 versus a goose gear down getup 😅
THERMALSARE A MUST!!! AND YES, DANGER OF FROSTBITE IS VERY REAL, ESPECIALLY THE EXTREMITIES, IE TOES , FINGER TIPS,, HEY, YOU FORGOT TO ADD THE WINDCHILL!!!
Great tour ! Burrrrr that’s cold 🥶! I’m too old to live there at this point in my life as I’m past 80 now ! The cold 🥶 the past few years I don’t feel so comfortable like I used to ! But I enjoy watching a lot of videos on Alaska great country !
A lot of my video collection are in and about Alaska , I have six that cover Klondike Gold and the “White Pass and Yukon Railroad “ and Skagway today ! One Man’s Gold Rush ( book with photos taken by Mr Hegg ) 1898-99 ! I’ve had the book for two weeks now ! 100,000 gold stampeders bought a ton of supplies and headed for the gold fields , Mr. Hegg took his camera equipment and headed North ! Amazing read so far ! But I do have several DVDs that cover the towns and villages in Alaska , they are very good !!
I lived in Fairbanks from 1986-1993. I lived in Sophies Plaza off University Ave. In fact they had just built the new Fred Meyer on the corner of University and Airport Way. I was remembering some of the spots you were driving around like Cushman and going to Lathrop High for the pool. It was a nice small town but the winters were brutal. I saw Genes in there too. Bought a car at Seekins Ford in 1988.
Yep. We were on the bus together. I zeroed in on the headband while I was scrolling through "Fairbanks" content because it struck an old memory. When you said your name was Lissy it clicked. Great video. Love content from my hometown 😎.
Born in Fairbanks in the territory of Alaska (pre 1959) before Alaska was the 49th state...... Grew up on another planet then most..... Had both very good... and very bad life lessons there.....learned alot of independence early in life.....
@@functional_elements looking at Fairbanks. Wife has healthcare provider opportunities there. The logistics of selling a home here and buying there is truly overwhelming but YOLO!
I was so stoked to see Lathrop H.S. I was a Malamute from 1976 to 1978. I will note that the pool we used wasn’t nearly as nice as the one you got to use…although the plan to build it was already on the books when I graduated. I live in Florida now….wonder why?
BASICS !! BASICS !! What was the DATE of the videos !! I have NO idea if it was January or March !! Your dad said the sun was MUCH higher than a month ago, but he DIDN'T TELL WHAT THE DATE WAS !!
Wow, you need to consider making travel videos. You're a natural. So ASMR and this is one of the best everyday type videos I've ever seen of Alaska and one of the best overall. Great job!
Fort Wainwright/Fairbanks arrived in November 1978 and lived in Fairbanks, North Pole, after leaving the US Army in 1981. However, from 1981 to 1984/5, life was rough in both cities temperatures below -20*; my new employment took me to South Central Alaska, Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, and then Wasilla. Good winters down in South Central Alaska, plus not too much snow if you live outside Anchorage/Eagle River, Alaska areas, 38 years, home. Love Alaska!
Just now came across your video. I was stationed at Fort Wainwright from October 1973 to October 1976. It was the best 3 years of my life! I got there a few months before the pipeline construction started in the spring of 1974. Fairbanks was a wild and woolly town back then. There were numerous bars and clubs on 1st and 2nd Avenue that are long gone. Two things about winter in Fairbanks that I don't miss are very dry skin and surprisingly strong static electricity!
@@functional_elements Spent 14 years of my life in Siberia. And always thought that nothing can compare with temps there. But it turns out Alaska could ;)
We'd like to have a trip to Fairbanks for the northern lights. But worry about the freezing temperature there. Which month was in your video? What looks like in October?
I took this video in January. October is cool temperatures and may or may not being snowing yet. Very low chances of seeing northern lights in October though. You don't have to worry about the freezing temperatures, just dress warm :) I hope you get to see them!
@@functional_elements Thank you for the information. In your opinion, which month would have more chance to see northern lights in Fairbanks? Fortunately we are still planning.
No mention of the UAF -40 club? It’s worth looking up if you really want to know what college students do around here for kicks when it gets that cold.
Thanks for the wonderful tour. I now have to tell you that even if every woman in Fairbanks was as cute as you are,I could not live there during the winter. It's simply too cold for me and not enough sunlight. Ames,Iowa is cold enough.I do hope you enjoy it there. It would be neat seeing moose wandering around. Thanks again, dear one,for the tour.
West Valley and UAF alumni here too! I live in SoCal now. Best summers there, but the harsh Jan. and Feb. months were enough...decided to move to SoCal in 1991.
@@functional_elements They love their basketball at Monroe. Good Catholic school. When I was 21 at UAF, a couple buddies and I rented a house down the street from Monroe. I also used to play pickup b.b. across street from the school. Mixed memories....worst school performance by me, partied too much. My parents were a rock though. They lived in my childhood home next to the Musk Ox Farm on Yankovich Rd. Prodigal son came home and finished well at UAF. Now I'm an older aerospace & defense manufacturing engineer in SoCal. Only big reason to go back to Fairbanks is to visit my nephew. I believe he's something like the IT manager at Golden Valley Electric now.
Hello! stupid question but do all cars drive with chains on their tires during the winter? Aside from SUVs&Trucks...lol I have an opportunity to work in Fairbanks in the near future. I have a small car is why im asking LOL.
@@blehlee6745 just for driving around town purposes people do not put chains on their tires. Generally people buy a set of winter tires which have studs in them for extra traction and they get their tires changed by the time the snow falls. Hope the opportunity works out for you!
Living in Alaska and remaining sane would certainly be a challenge. Needing to keep a car plugged into an electrical outlet was where they lost me. Oh hell no!
Thanks for sharing ☺️ It was a pleasure meeting you as you walked down memory lane. Any suggestions for a Male looking for purchase land to create a self sustaining life there ?! ❤🥋
Wow. It is not that cold even in Reykjavik, Iceland, where I have been many times. Great video! I live in the Manchac Swamps of Louisiana outside of a small town called Springfield, about a 45 minute drive from New Orleans and Baton Rouge (originally from Memphis). It is scorching hot 9 months out the year here and warm 3 months, still 85 F at 2:20 a.m. We have 1 freezing day a year where it may hit 28 F. Snow or ice once every 5 years. I find this life style amazing!! Thank you for the education. Greg Adams, Springfield, Louisiana.
What type of vehicle were you driving around in, in all those video segments ? Did it require special tires to handle the cold ? In the segment showing the double thermometer on the wall, you can see BIG windows. Are they double-paned ? Triple-paned ? SINGLE-paned ?
Most of us use Bridgestone blizzack tires in the winter and all cars are “ winterized “ you plug them in at night and if it sits for a long period of time. It’s usually a battery trickle charger. A block heater and oil,pan heater. Otherwise car wouldn’t start. We all usually have auto start as well
Hello I'm from Philippines, I really want to go in vacation in Alaska but I don't know how to get there. I hope I can give my Wife a gift of visiting Alaska. She really loves the Northern Lights.
I love the cold . It has a mystical awesome feeling in the air .. In Montana here It gets down to them tempts it's definitely different because you can't make a mistake. We are far out of town . But any was this is my first video I watched of yours and good job . And the comments are intertaining .. You can breath your lungs don't freeze solid . But if you stand in one spot your feet will freeze to the ground yep have to wait until you have to pee ..😅
Hello, enjoyed your show so much. Live in southern New Zealand, at the moment we have -3c outside, so totally nothing to worry about after watching your show. Stay safe.
@@werecyre November might be a little early for Northern lights. You will definitely have an Alaska winter experience, it will be cold, but the coldest months are usually December-February
Nice tour of Fairbanks! I used to live in Fairbanks about 9 yrs on Airport Way! Beautiful people and place to live for but not for coldest weather. I lived there I got this type of weather -70 one night and storm as well.. Anyway, Fairbanks is a best place to live ❤
I live in California and been to Fairbanks three times, all the contents you have shown give me nostalgia. I have just subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to seeing more videos. God bless.
@@jimhammer2012 A lot of people have garages to keep their cars warm and protected from the cold. People do also leave their cars parked outside and they have to make sure to keep the car plugged in so it can start in the cold🤞🏽
We want to learn !! You could have told us the streets you were driving on, too. (Most of the street signs were too distant, and you wizzed by too fast. They were a blur.) You also could have told us the time of day, for each segment. We could see how light it was, BUT DIDN'T KNOW THE TIME !!
Hello, my name is Corey. I live in Fairview Oregon in the United States. So it would make sense if I move to FairBanks Alaska. You will be my best friend if I successfully move there. How are you doing? I'm strongly considering moving there.
