What a trip! This year I decided to take my 1961 Corvair Lakewood the the annual "Fan Belt Toss" held in Palm Springs, California. We definitely ran into some issues early into our trip, but got them quickly resolved at my dads shop ‪@MattsOffRoadRecovery‬

Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, it has different designations in service depending on configuration, but thats the 'make and model' of the base version 😉

Those 2 Plane's you took a photo with on the way home from Palm Springs CA in the Desert were U.S. AIR FORCE OSPREY - an yes, they are being looked over due to recent Crashes with 1 killing 8 men near Japen in the Ocean.

Those planes are Marine Corps MV-22 ospreys. Funny story those planes are from my old Squadron VMM-163 based out of Miramar California. i just left them in Oct to move to the east coast. I can almost guarantee you chatted up with some of my buddies.

typical Gen Z child. At 2:35 your own father calls you a kid and he meant it, so a better title would be "Driving my Father's 1961 Corvair" and then making him fix it after already gifting it to me. Learn to be an adult Rudy. Your brother Rhett is more grown up for goodness sake. You are worse than that watching the watchman kid who is son to Amagansett Press. Another grown child who's parents did everything for him and yet is unwilling to try and make it on his own and be honest about his position. Sounds familiar don't it..

I needed to change the clutch on my Greenbriar van and had never changed a clutch before. I started at 6 PM, and after completing the change I learned there is a right way and a wrong way to put the disk between the pressure plate and the flywheel. I had to change the clutch again using only a floor jack and jack stands to raise the car and lower the engine. In the end, over about 6 hours I removed the engine, changed the clutch, and reinstalled the engine by myself twice. I really enjoyed that 6-door Greenbriar van, which I had installed a 140 HP Corsa engine along the way.

My father bought new a ‘64 Corvair, 4 dr. 4 speed, it was a very nice car for the time, and even today I would like one especially a convertible. The only issue he ever had was if he took it to have the oil changed anywhere other then the dealership it would blow the oil filter off and dump the oil, I do not remember why if it was the incorrect filter or what but it happened 2 different times. The only issue was it could have used A/C but at the time A/C was not a standard issue or as efficient as they are now. It was very affordable at the time and I remember very efficient as far as gas mileage, 25 - 28 mpg regularly.

I think you are right about "most" drivers. As I remember it "most" drivers of the Corvair spent more time upside-down in the ditch than on the road. I think that is why Nader was so successful when he testified before Congress about the Corvair and the unsafe condition of many other products sold to the American public. He was instrumental in the mandate forcing auto makers to make seat belts standard equipment in new cars.

Loved seeing the classics. RAD is a must watch channel. I find it hard to believe your Corvair would only do 65mph on the freeway. My ‘62 Monza would run 75 all day long. My sister and I both learned to drive in that car before we bought our own. I still remember the engine oil smell when you turned on the heat.. So.... throughout the sixties once a week mom would put a dollars worth of gas in it...... that was about a quarter to a third of a tank back then and that would last the whole week of errands.. In the early 70's once mom splurged and filled it up. to the top...... on the way home there was a funny metalic boink, boink, boink sound coming from the front...... We finally tracked the sound down by rocking the car in the driveway and it was the brass fuel gauge float boinking off the top of the gas tank.... someplace it had never been for the previous 10 years mom owned it. Lots of good memories watching this.

I'm glad your motor was good after all Hope it holds together it and the car for the rest of the trip. That military plane you saw I believe is called an Osprey. It takes off and lands vertically but transitions to regular horizontal flight once high enough to clear the props.
