Not far wrong: the Camaro owes its styling to the Corvair's mid-cycle refresh in '65, so much so that if you want a good air dam for the front of your late model Corvair, you buy the one that fits on the first m.y. Camaro...

My grandfather found a 65 in really good shape when I was 5 years old, we got it home and started working on it. We stripped it down and he walked me through the brake system, along with the fuel system. Showed me how to rebuild the carburators and we had made it our little project to restore it. Here we are fifteen years later and she's sitting in the paint booth completely ready to have a new coat of shine put back on her. Sadly my grandfather passed away early this year, and we never got to finish our long awaited project. It's really nice to see one and it's allways good for people to see and understand some of America's different vehicles, especially air cooled engines in these interesting corvairs

My 1st car was a 65 Corsair w/140 hp, 4sp, full instr, bucket seats, dark green w/metal flake. It would top out at 110 mph. Stock small block v8s could not out run me. Problems: exhaust leak into the driver/passenger compartment, oil leak around the pushrod seals. Ralph Naders "roll over" problems were fixed with a change to the rear suspension. Design 1st: rear engine, air cooled, unibody construction. Bad press (Nader) killed the car. Aftermarket parts fixed the exhaust leak, and oil leak. Engine was used in home built aircraft.
@jessebianchi2631
@jessebianchi2631 3 года назад
@@LCASTV actually nader rightfully criticized the first series and praised the 65 and later. i read unsafe at any speed. the actual fault was corporate GM. they saw no point in building a competitor to the camaro. i owned several early ones and can attest to that exhaust leak. i passed out (exhaust leak), flipped (swing axle rear) and ended up in a ditch on the other side of the road. GM was aware of the problems because my '60 model had a separate gasoline heater mounted in the trunk. your old corsa was one i always wanted but never found at a price i could afford.

Had the same car in high school. Picked up for $250 for a runner with a bad shell, and a shell minus a driveline. Both 66 models, base, manuals. Got them a week after my 15th birthday. Had the keeper up and going a month before getting my permit. Mom and dad did the shakedown drives, and I practiced with it and mom's 85 caravan. Drove it on the farm for testing, after chores, and got to know the car well. Never did a resto on it. Ended up driving it 6 years, and passing it on to a friend that helped build my 58 belvedere, as her first car. Then to her little sister, who parked it at home, after graduation. Sat for a few years, then her parents consodered selling it. Upon inspection, they saw it was solid, not pretty, but only surfaxe rust, and small dings. They got it running, sent us the driveline, and we rebuilt it, with a slight overbore. Car looks, and runs, showroom new. Still see it at shows regularly, left to her older brother, when mom passed. Other than our 4WD trucks, and my sister in laws Fiero, I've never driven a better vehicle for a Great Lakes winter. Other than air cooled heaters. Ended up installing pair of 12 V electric units. Fun little car.

65 Corvair convertible was my first legal ride, [had a 57 Plymouth at age 14] 4 speed, found a note book under driver seat with all work done on the car up to 295 thou miles. Dealer told me it had 68,000. Close ! Drove it to college, about 70 mile round trip, it threw a quart of oil all over the motor each way, [yes 2 qts a day]. Guy really wanted it, sold it to him, he didn't believe me about the oil, blew the motor in 3 days. I really liked it it was a blast to drive, my uncle worked for GM offered to get me new drive train, but Dad said no way, he helped me buy a new 70 Chevy Nova. Corvairs are still a fav. of mine.

She put concreate blocks in the front to add weight. Then by the time I got into high school I had a friend who owned a Spyder version of the Covair. I remember that he carried around a gallon glass bottle to buy bulk oil from a local Star gas station so when you filled it up gas, you could fill it up with oil too :) It was a fun car to ride around in. He talked about how he had gone over a rock on an old logging road and the rock gouged a gash in the fuel tank, which he said he rubbed a bar of soap over to plug the leak. He also said that he had taken a can of sky blue paint and dumped it over the top of the car on a hot summer day and let the paint run down over all of the car and that it was the smoothest, nicest paint job he had ever had. He said that there were a lot of people who used to try to buy it from him and that one guy in particular would ask him to sell it all of the time until one day he sold it to him.

I had one back in '79. (4-on-the-floor) #1 thing, if there's ANY blow-by make sure the dip-stick is notched in the tube, it WILL blow out and take most of the oil with it! Also check the push rod tubes once it warms up, they do tend to leak oil. #2. don't leave the spare tire in the engine compartment, the nose on those cars are too light, and they can hydroplane very easily. I used to carry 2 cinder blocks in there as well, made a huge difference in the handling. That looks like a 110 model, I had the 140, drank a lot more gas! Those cars did not have a lock steering, so a simple switch/button will work, the starter I think was on the underside, on the right side?

Love it! Had a 62 Monza 2dr in college in NE Ohio about Jan to May 68. It, too, was a Powerglide with the little shifter knob on the dash. Mine was a rust belt victim, rusted out floors and engine compartment over the battery. Sold it for another period car but always liked the car. Dependable and warm in the Youngstown Winter. This one looks very solid and maybe only surface rust on the front floors. If the guy gave you all of the parts, it looks like a good restorable car. Paint and reassemble! Hope she gets a good home. Thanks for the video!

That is a 1966 Corsair Monza: 164 cu.In. / 2.7 litres, 2 x 1bbl. Rochester carbs and hydraulic valve lifters = 110 HP. It has a mechanical fuel pump driven off the cam - and it is located between the two idler pulleys on the cooling fan belt drive system. The ignition is definitely a points system (the first electronic ignition systems didn’t emerge until the early 1970s). The Ralph Nader beef was with the pre-‘65 Corvairs which had a swing axle rear end (like an early VW Bug). In 1965, Chev went to a double U-joint rear axle setup like the Corvette uses. Those later gen cars handle great and were quite fast - but the damage had been done and the 1968 Corvairs were the final year. Oh, one more thing: leaving the key on will not cause the coil to explode - but it will cause the point contacts to be burned.

Incase no one posted about that "what is this" comment about the distributor, it is a sponge that has 30 weight oil on it to keep the distributor lobes wet. This help keep the points tab from wearing out and closing the point gap.

Mook & Digs, I firmly believe that the Corvair was Chevrolet's best small car, ever! While the corporation is hashing out which cars they should do restomods of, (as they did the 1969 Camaro), they should consider the new Corvair as a remake, and with both the newest and best technology to recreate it, AND Ralph Nader having finally met his daughter in the afterlife, the United States won't again be deprived of a really great little car! Please be careful with the rotten floors, kids! We don't want anything to happen to either of you! From, an old man & fan! Great job getting this Corvair started!

Another purpose of the ACC terminal on the ignition switch is to isolate the #4 terminal on the voltage regulator from the IGN side of the switch. When you turn the switch to ON, both the IGN and ACC terminals will be hot. If you turn it to Accessory, only the ACC terminal will be hot. The reason you want to isolate the regulator #4 terminal, is that it has full voltage from the alternator when running, and will keep the vehicle running in the OFF position if it's tied to the IGN side. This is why on most GM's the heater blower will keep running for a bit until the engine stops completely, since it's on the same circuit as the #4 regulator terminal. 1973 and up GM 10-SI, 12SI, etc. alternators are internally regulated, but have the same issue because the wire from the #2 terminal goes direct to the ACC terminal on the ignition switch (unless it has a charge light inline).😉

my friends family owned a warehouse full of like dozens of Corvairs, somewhere in Florida, till the building collapsed destroying the lot of them. I love the Corvair, unsafe at any speed my arse. they are awesome. And those holes in the floor is natural weight reduction, helps the car go faster. My old Buick had lots of speed holes in the floor. I got tired of the carpet always being wet and moldy though so I patched it up properlike. By that I mean I used rivets and construction adhesive to bond cut apart beer cans to the floor, was like factree

I received an abandonned Corvair project. First I did not get the charm of the car. But the longer I work on it, the more I like it. Unfortunately it is a 63 model. This one is prettier and a bit faster as well. This one deserves a full resotration. Find a good home for it! A previous onwer had a sense of humor: On the front windshield it says: "No airbags, we will die as real men". On the rear window it says: "Low in power but strong in pollution."

Growing up, our family had a 64 Monza convertible (110), later on I had a 66 Corsa convertible (140). My Mom worked at a tire store and was given a free set of Michelin radials, it was funny seeing mechanics shake their heads when my five foot and a bit mom tried to tell them the tires weren't flat. ;-D For decades hot rodders loved the Corvair front suspension for its compact and adaptable design, that's until the Mustang II came out with its disc-brakes, rack and pinion steering already installed. Suk - Nader's book was about the 1960 to 63 Corvair rear suspension (proved wrong/lied in early 70s). The 1964 Corvair suspension was modified and 65 to 69s had a new design. ;-)
