My fire department had this truck in it's original "tanker " form years ago. The forestry service gave it to us. It was a great running a driving tanker that served us well for many years. I was blown away when I seen the the pics of it while it was still in the tanker mode. Thank you for sharing and bring back fond memories.

That is my favorite Dodge truck design. The hinged fenders were pretty genius. A friend of mine has one fully restored and several others he is working on. Thanks for showing yours off. It's pretty sweet.
I used to belong to a very small Volunteer Fire Dept in Upstate NY, and at that time, both of their Primary Pumpers were Dodges. The 1st out Pumper was a 1961 Dodge D700, with a 361 Engine, 5 Speed New Process Transmission, and Eaton 2 Speed Rear Axle, and the switch for the 2 Speed was actually a Toggle Switch that was built into the left side of the shift knob, and you went from low to hi or hi to low with your right thumb. It had a 750 gpm 3 Stage Pump, which was Pressure, Volume, and High Pressure. I could easily get close to 1150 gpm out of that Pump. Their Back Up/2nd out Pumper was a 1974 Dodge C900 with a 555 Cummins Diesel Engine, 5 Speed New Process Transmission, and 2 Speed Rear Axle. It had a 1,000 gpm 3 Stage Pump, but unlike the other Truck, the Max gpm of the Pump was only 1,000 GPM.

Hauled gravel in the summer and pulp wood in the winter with an 800 (a '66 I think) in the late 60's. Company I worked for had a lot of them, originally with 413's and 5 and 4's. 413's wouldn't stand up so the company put in V6 GM's, problem solved. They were a bit underpowered but with rear end gearing that topped them out around 60 MPH the 5 and 4"s gave them all the power they needed and we were off the highway more than on so they did very well. The engines probably paid for themselves in no time. They stood up well and gave great fuel mileage.
The 413 industrial motors werent the best for offroad use so I have heard. Especially pulling hills. Not to mention the terrible fuel mileage from them. A lot of the industrial gm motors were pretty dang good. It was definitely an exploratory period in the history of trucking and big gas motors. Especially with diesel not being a full mainstay yet. Gas was still king. 60mph is really good for that time though, hopefully the truck is still hanging around somewhere! Thanks for sharing and watching my video!
Actually that company was quite a large one with somewhere in the neighbourhood of 200 trucks on the road I don't know how many had the GM conversion but there were quite a few. They tried to get Chrysler to sell them 800's before they went to GM's but they were told, so the story goes, that they would have to get 900 's at a considerably greater expense. Chrysler was not happy so the next series of trucks they bought were R=Model Macks.@@OLDSKUULGARAGE
I was a US Air Force heavy equipment mechanic back in the early 80's. We had a lot of these old Dodge chassis trucks, not only as tankers, but I worked on them as aircraft deicing trucks. The deicer system was a lot of trouble, but the basic truck was always pretty good. The Air Force loved the Industrial 413. In these trucks, as pony engines on street sweepers and my favorite use was 413 powered runway sweepers. Due to the design of the sweeper, these didn't have a real exhaust system, but just a short, open pipe after the manifolds. Boy the racket those things made!

@@OLDSKUULGARAGE If you find anything like a 'data plate' in there, or any of the paperwork that has the USAF Reg. No. (registration number), let me know. That would go a way in tracing its history. The Reg No. would look like 70B1946 or something like that. The first two digits signify the model year, the letter, which may be a B, K or L, or even A, is just a way the AF classified vehicles, and the last four digits are randomly assigned numbers, specific to each vehicle or piece of equipment. You may run across a metal data plate under the dash or hood.
@@grassblade63 a few questions before I look. Would the data plate be stuck on (adhesive) or riveted on? I know there is a data plate that is thin metal for US property notice. There is also a us air force bar code sticker, would that lead to anything?
That’s how trucks should still be made. Everything is made towards making it easier to maintaining it. As now it’s all the opposite. Always liked those trucks. Very nice example. 👍👍
@OLDSKUULGARAGE I can tell you that the 855 had to be tilted over to the passenger side like a Ford. That means many external parts were unique to the Dodge. It was wedged in there as tight as any modern pickup with a diesel. The dog house was big and made it even more cramped in a small cab. The glass area is small, it felt like sitting in a chopped 32 Ford coupe.
@@davidkeeton6716 that is a little of what I have heard lol. I think unique would be a good word to describe it haha. Im sure it was a freight train though! These trucks are not very heavy especially without a sleeper. Do you know if the 855 still had to be tilted if the truck was a high cab or was that a high cab only motor?
@OLDSKUULGARAGE We had several of these come in the Volvo dealership where I worked. The cab looked just like this truck but the floor and motor box/dog house was different depending on the engine.
I had a friend that had a Dodge tractor with a Detroit 6-71. He used it to move his dirt equipment. I wish I had it today I’m sure it was low mileage when he retired and sold it

They were definitely modular trucks with lots of options! Many engine and driveline packages. I wish they would have been more of a hit so more could be around today!
I had a truck exactly like this but ended up selling it as there was just too much to do to make it viable. I now have a near-mint C600 gas, which I plan on using to recreate a vintage drag car hauler. Your truck is very nice! Thank you for making this video.

@@OLDSKUULGARAGE Brings back memories alright some not so fond. The gear shift knobs were the factory silver glitter ones kinda cool for the day. It was the mid seventies, I was in my early twenties working for a local dairy in NM on a milk dock loading semi's. Occasionally they had me move trailers . Not sure what I was doing I sweat blood an tears driving on conjested narrow oneway city streets lined with parked cars in both directions. That's how I learned to drive and eventuality get my CDL. Like your truck. I had a 1959 W300 Dodge Power Wagon with a flathead 6. The dash was the same as yours. The cab, windows was like yours too. Had the single speedo in the center, like yours was. It had a 10,000 # winch on the front bumper. A propane co had it b4 me. They had a 6" steel beam mounted on top of four steel posts. This made it possible to deliver 500 gallon propane tanks. I bought the truck and turned it it to a portable welding rig. Put a SA200 Lincoln Welder right behind the cab. Also added a cutting torch rack. I made out well with it. Sold it. Miss it too. I love those old Dodge Trucks been a big fan of them since I was a kid my grandfather had two that were old grain haulers and always loved how the fenders swung open the ones he had were the early 60's models with the four eyes instead of the two bug eyes

When I started driving, my Father would reach over and slap my leg and tell me, "It's a clutch peddle, not a foot rest so unless you want to replace the clutch in this, I suggest you take your foot off it between shifts and when driving down the road." I bring this up because I couldn't help but notice you riding around with your foot on the peddle. If properly adjusted, the throw out bearing should only be spinning when you step on the clutch, but with your foot riding on the peddle, yours is spinning all the time. It won't last long like that.
I was not pressing the pedal but resting my foot. The return springs on these old dodges were pretty big for the clutches. I have never heard this before but I will definitely keep this in mind for the future! Thanks for watching and commenting!

It was very ingenious of Chrysler to use existing cab models for the C Series and Bighorn. They are a great looking cab in my opinion also. These gas trucks are a good look into the past and how things have really changed. Thanks for watching!
It would have been more common in its day for regional trucks. Long haul otr would have used diesels. I made it a tractor to pull my stepdeck and carry the imperial/other equipment. For 3-5mpg unloaded its a hefty cost every drive lol. Thanks for watching!
Australia here, That swing out fender is so clever, I've never seen that before. In Australia, we never got those American trucks as we built our own to a totally different design. Our heaviest were the Dodge 700, AT4 '63 to '72 and the D5N , 700 '73 to '79. With a Perkins 6 diesel, 361 V8 petrol or a Cummins 180 V8 diesel. Some had GM's fitted too.Single or bogie drive.
I have heard yall had some export restrictions on a lot of yalls trucks. The manuals mention some export stuff but very little. The swing out fender really is a great idea! Most of the motors are super easy to access and makes working on the bigger truck a lot easier than the earlier coe’s or lcf’s. How common was the perkins down there? It was fairly rare here. @@OLDSKUULGARAGE Yeah,we had some weird import taxes and a bounty 'tax' on imported cars, trucks and tractors to protect local industry, at the time. You could personally import an American truck, but you really paid a lot of tax.As for the 6-354 Perkins ,they are in everything over here, thousands of them,in trucks,tractors,harvesters. Mechanics call them 'Plastic Perkins'.
@@johnkauppi7078 the perkins trucks are something like double digit production numbers for each year for all the dodge trucks. Especially earlier on. Which makes them pretty rare here in the states. Yeah they were very unique & tuff in their own way the near west suburban village of Maywood Illinois used all Dodge vehicles for about 3 or 4 decades the village dump trucks & snow plows & Squad Cars when Dodge got out of the heavy truck market in 76 or 77 I guess they just went with a mix of Fords & GMs & I - Hs and for the village Agecy service cars & Police Cars they started useing Buick LeSabres in 1977 there was A large & very famous Buick dealer in the village at First avenue & Madison st Walter Peckat Buick Company Maywood Illinois
It is interesting you mention that. From what I have heard the dodges were very common in specific areas. And almost none in others. They definitely got many years of service probably more than they were ever intended for. It is sad a lot of them are gone. I have a 1971 C700 that was purchased new by a small town in Pennsylvania. I originally had a factory dump bed and snow plow. When I bought it there was a flatbed on it. It has a 413 industrial with a 5 speed and 2 speed axle. Hoping to get it on the road within the next year. It is a father/sons project that has been waiting for about 15 years to get a refirb. started.

When driving any vehicle with a standard trans you never put it in neutral and let it coast. If anything were to happen; brake or clutch failure; you may not get it back in gear: Then you have a run away. It is. Not a good practice
That was explained to me by another commenter. I was bobtailing but I also understand the bad habit building of when I am hauling how it could be bad. Only thing I am not fully understanding is not getting back in gear. I have never had an issue getting the truck back in gear. Can you explain this to me more so that I understand better? Edit: What I am asking is, what prevents me from putting the truck back in gear? I understand coming to a stop with engine braking. I want to make a video explaining to newer drivers as well so that others do not make the same mistakes.

I in the early 80;s a friend and i went to a wrecking yard and we spotted a 70- Dodge it was a Concrete truck and it did have the 413, 5sod w/the 2spd rearend, I really liked how the fenders opened from the side, Another great idea Dodge came up with. Good looking you got. Those trucks will last 5 life times. And yes get rid of the split rims and go with the 11r 22's is a great idea

Shhhh we cant let people know im in the armpit of America where it is 100° everyday lol. It is a great little route to take the trucks out. Not crazy amounts of traffic to deal with as these are not fast trucks. Especially with how people are on their phones all day! Ive put a lot of work in that dang motor. It does run very smooth for a v8 though. I didnt talk on the drive because of how loud it is in the cab, but that was not transferred to the video. Thanks for watching!
You might be able to adapt a 67-72 GM light truck door latch and striker to your doors, they are a fairly similar shape and size to the old Fargo-era dodge cabs and function in a similar way.
They do look like they may fit but I will be repairing the old lock. I have figured out how to fix it I just didnt do it correctly the last time lol. If more stuff was missing I would definitely convert but there is too much that would have to get modified for me to do it at this time. It does look like even the door handle functions in a similar manner though. It is not a bad Idea though and I will mention this in the video I do on the door latch! Very nice. I replaced the governed carburetor on mine with a ford carburetor from a 69 F series truck. Also replaced the distributor with a one wire ready to run kind. Also 413/361 family. I can hit speeds of 70-73! Top recommended rpm around 3800.
I have seen your truck and it looks great! I actually recognized the profile pic too! I want to stay governed for mine and actually have two governed four barrels ready to swap as is but I like the two barrel. Mine isnt as fast as yours lol. The truck was offroad optioned so gearing is super low and max speed with two speed axle engaged is 55mph maybe 60 really cooking along. It grinds because you're not double clutching. Notice you're not hitting the split so it's like you're shifting wide and jumping a gear each time. It wasn't too long after that where they got rid of the two speed rear end and came out with the Eaton Ten Speed transmission. I still like those better than the 9/13/18 speeds. Simpler in the city.
It is a synchronized box from 2nd to 5th. You do not need to double clutch when shifting from 2nd through fifth unless pulling a load. It was grinding because I am still learning the truck/rookie driver. The gates are super loose on these transmissions but not the worst. I am starting to get the feel of it but still make mistakes. I would love to drive the truck more but it is very expensive to run with todays gas prices and the mileage it gets in the city. The ten speeds were out at the time but you have to remember most trucks were not national otr. They were regional or local which is where the 5spd and 2spd rear axle come in. Cool little fact is you could order a c series with the 413 gas motor and an eaton 10speed. That is a very rare gear set to find today. Thanks for commenting and watching my video!
Nice to see. However, that air cleaner set up you currently have will draw very warm air which is not the most efficient for combustion and fuel milage. Cool air drawn from the outside his denser and therefor much more efficient for combustion and mileage as well to a certain extent.
Yes you are correct. Originally the truck had an oil bath air cleaner in that spot. I decided to use the oiled filter element type because it is easy to maintain and I am not in a dusty environment. I do not want to convert to exterior air cleaner as that would involve cutting a hole in the hood. I'm not worried about mileage that much though. The truck gets an average of 3mpg and even worse loaded. They were not known for their efficiency lol! Thanks for Watching!

I see the D, B, and H, knobs on the dash, defrost, blower, and heat. But what the the T and V knobs control? I guess V is for Vent... I love them big old trucks!
The V is for vent. There is a cowl vent that pops up where the cowl should be. It looks like the early ford f100 pop up vents. T is for throttle. The throttle gets pulled out when idling for pto use. You can raise it to a specific rpm to get the correct speed and power for the pto. The governor system that works between the carb and distributor regulates the throttle to keep the engine from stalling under load. It basically self regulates once throttle is set. began working in a small family owned garage in 75? greener the &&^%%^ BUT! loved MOPARs. customers all cherished there rigs! i did my best to keep them working. scrapper owned his Dodge. like clock work; alway's brought in for service. battery box in the fender was a dumb area! weight. rust. truck wasn't old. alway's kept a tooth pick above the dash. kinda gross....good luck!

Hey Man, great video! That's a cool truck. I noticed you have an air valve on the dash....normally I'd think that's the deep reduction valve Also, you should look into "double clutching"....you might have heard of it. Anyways, we have alot in common, would be nice chatting with you sometime!
Thanks! The valve on the dash is the parking brake disengagement button. The two speed axle engagement is kind weird where is electronic over air. Simply put you can only engage the two speed axle over a certain speed. Kinda odd lol. Yeah I generally dont double clutch when bob tailing but definitely under load. I have gotten some other comments because of that lol. We definitely do some similar stuff that is for sure. Im definitely gonna watch some more of your videos when I get home tonight!

I've only seen the push/pull type....thje type you have is definetely better....can easily be replaced by a 3-way valve if you need to....mine is a combination type on my triaxle....stupid plastic...has a crack in it would like to replace it. I have a 2 speed differential on my international as well! Used to be electric. I converted it to air!!....now there's a hydraulic 3-way valve on my shift stick. I thought someone would have mentioned the double clutch to you....I do it even when empty and even on my car...i think it works alot better
@@OldCrowsClassicCars ohhh im sorry I thought you were talking about the black push pull valve lolol which is plastic haha. The switch valve is a valve that limits brake pressure by 50% to the front wheels for wet weather. Im gonna do a video on startup procedures and the stuff on the dash at some point. I think im gonna leave mine electric for now. Definitely has crossed my mind before though. I would like to convert the truck to a 5x4 setup with an auxiliary at some point which almost wouldn’t need the two speed rear axle but not sure yet. There is a lot to that conversion. And yeah i got a lot of comments for the coasting in neutral. I didnt realize people would want to see lots of downshifting and proper double clutching. It was failure on my part forgetting there are a lot of trucker guys that are interested in the driving and the sounds/ clanks of the truck. Live and learn I guess. I can send you a close up of the dash if you would like me too.
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE Oh, I see the "brake limiter" I have one also. It's quite abit of working making a air unit for the differential. I learned about the "not coasting in neutral" late as well. Have you ever done a transmission swap? I'm currently doing one on my international...but couldn't get the transmission all the way in. Whereabouts in the states do you live? Perhaps I could help you in your projects someday
@OldCrowsClassicCars i have never done a transmission swap although i would recommend spending good money on a transmission jack and staying on concrete where you can roll the jack. Also make sure you are lifting square. If you cant get the transmission in all the way make sure you have the clutch square to the input shaft with a proper alignment tool. Personally I think coasting is fine until you are loaded or pulling anything. The truck only weighs 11,500lbs. There are heavy 1 ton trucks on the road. Obviously as the weights of the vehicles go up you will need to be more concerned with leaving it in gear and engine braking. Where it can be an issue is emergency braking and not being able to get the truck back into gear on a steep grade. I am down in Florida.
Thanks, I believe it could be a bit of both me and the truck. I havent tried to see fully if it is the truck though. It is a fully synchro transmission so I dont need to double clutch when unloaded but it does seem the synchro in fifth gear may be going out. To test double clutch fifth would be appropriate. The truck sat for 20 years so it is possible that fifth’s synchro is broken down/rotted from the oil. The truck was also in a wreck which means it could have been in a wreck in fifth gear. Ill probably be doing a video on it at some point. Third gear in my d500 has a similar issue that was caused by a wreck. Thanks for watching!

It tops at 45-50mph without the two speed and you can get another 5mph witht the two speed. I dont remember the rears ratios, its been a while. I want to say something along the lines of 7.70 lowest. 6.70 with the two speed. Thanks for watching!
Is the two speed button working,, ? , if it is you have 2 higher end gears left using the fifth over gear pattern shift, possibly,? Best learned on country back road when splitting gears though. Thank you for the update,, very cool rig,,!
Yes, the two speed rear is working. I used it a couple times in the video but it is hard to see because of the camera not picking it up. A few issues though that will be addressed in a video later. One is I need bigger tires so the ratio of the overall final drive will match the transmission behind the speedometer. The transmission has a “safety” switch that requires the truck to be going 40mph in order for the two speed rear axle to engage. I may bypass it but I am not sure yet. It would be cool to just add another stick with a brownie and leave the safety switch active! Thanks for watching!
I never heard of that safety switch. It was always splitting the first three gears, then 4 low, 5 low, 4 high then 5 high. Also, any air brake trucks I drove the two speed rear was air activated, not electric. Live and learn. @@OLDSKUULGARAGE
@@oldrustycars i think it may have been a dodge and international thing. Dont ask me why cause I think it is a weird design. The 34k eatons arent the strongest out there but they definitely would be fine splitting with a load. The power comes from the switch up to to the transmission (speedo unit) which is hooked up behind the speedometer. When you hit 40mph it allows current to go to the solenoids which allow air to the shift unit. I wasnt able to get into 2nd speed for a while and it turns out the wire from the transmission (not the gearbox but the gear unit for the speedometer) was unplugged from the bulkhead. Super weird stuff. But however the truck was optioned for wheels you simply changed the transmission instead of a unit in the gearbox or the entire speedometer.
@@oldrustycars also I should mention if the truck had juice brakes there was an electric motor that shifted the axle. Not air. Thats a lot rarer but just a really weird thing that apparently broke a lot. Early eaton and rockwell both had some weird designs for the medium duty and medium-heavy duty trucks.

Actually almost everything is different component wise. I thought it would be also but it turned out to not be. The latch assemblies are all specific and the cabs are based off of the mid 50s and 57-59 trucks. Door handles and stuff were all the same though as you stated. There are some minor changes over time but mainly resemble those earlier trucks. Fun fact the cabs were made by chrysler into the 80s for another small truck manufacturer. Thank you for watching!
Yeah, the gear box is in great shape. Definitely a sloppier transmission by todays standards. But all the synchros seem to be working great. Definitely could be a lot worse! Thanks for watching!

The truck does have live tandems. If I remember off of the top of my head it has 6.70 low ratio. The transmission is a spicer 5653 and is only slightly different from the 5652. Mainly in gearing. It is synchro from 2nd-5th but I dont know the condition of the synchros. Thanks for watching!
A bighorn would be awesome! But I believe almost all of them have been discovered. At least the ones that are left. They go for a lot of money in a broken down state too. I am 6’3”. It is fair. The closer vehicle would be my D500. That would have the same cab. They are fairly good for space but the C series has a smaller cab. I think the D series steering column is a bit lower though. Thanks for watching!
The Dodge trucks were the American Brand. Fargo is the Canadian brand. They are both c series dodges. In ‘60 when the c series was released Desoto had their own line. But only for that year I believe as desoto was disbanded in ‘61. Fargo’s are a lot rarer for the fact there were fewer trucks sold in Canada. Thanks for Watching!

Yes you are correct. I am bob tailing so I am not going to be down shifting. There is no need. All these old transmissions have been abused by people that really really dont know from the military in the early 70s. Spicer 5 speeds are not known for there smooth shifting especially when cold and brand new. To shift into first without grinding the gears you have to raise the throttle and let it rest. Same with reverse. Even from a dead stop. That slop though lead to lots of reliability from these transmissions in school buses and regional trucks. Also I believe i was missing in 5th but not sure. 2nd-5th are synchronized but I still have trouble on 5th. I am going to keep saying im missing the gear until i get eyes on that synchronizer which are known for degrading in hypoid specific oils after sitting for extended periods. I will be seeking further training for managing full loads at some point even though I never plan to haul anything real in this truck. Or do any real amounts of hauling. Pulling my 30ft stepdeck trailer with a load will be the only load it may ever see. I cant legally pull that though until I get licensed and properly trained. Also why is it inappropriate to use neutral when slowing down? I have such big brakes on this truck and no load. Thank you for watching though. Please feel free to drop any advice.
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE I know it would be a bitchy box to shift down and petrol gas v8 is harder to get revs to match your speed to grab gears , easy way to figure this is to consintrate on how high your engine is revving and what speed you are doing when you up shift then pull it into neutral give excelerater and kick and go back down if engine speed matches road speed gear will glide in nicely , just keep practising up shift then back down until you got it mate , practice makes perfect , and no I don't expect you to be a pro immediately but these old trucks teach drivers much better than new trucks will teach, after a while you will love kicking that v8 in the guts coming down thru the gears like a race truck
@@holdenbrougham1056 i appreciate the advice. I have only rev matched a little here and there. Now that i have the truck in a better place I can practice more consistently now. If I get good enough with that transmission just about any other transmission will be cake. I appreciate the criticism and responding!
I am not the best driver yes, but everytime I coasted in neutral I was below 25mph. I know it is a bad habit for hauling but I was bob tailing in the video. The truck weighs 11,500 lbs as is in the video. Thanks for Watching!

You have to remember though that specifically Dodge was going after form over function and less about style until the mid seventies where the big truck side was shut down. That is a very cool truck. It would be neat to put a Cummins 6bt or 8.3 in there, but if you aim to keep it original, the 413 industrial is a damn good motor (just need to slap a 4 Barrel and headers so it can BREATHE) thanks for sharing
I do plan to leave it original but you never know what will break. I have a holley 4bbl governed that matches what would have been on the truck if it was a four barrel. Dont know if or when I will do it. It definitely is cool though! Thanks for watching!
