Driving my new Audi S4 (B9) - Who needs an RS4 ?! [FIRST DRIVE] 

The sound of that v6 is like music to my ears. Fantastic

Nice to have a review from a normal bloke who’s splashed the cash and really enjoys and appreciates something nice. There are others too but getting bored by the look-at-me flash vlog “it crowd” now.

S4 is the 'thinking man's' RS4. £15K less to buy, it costs less to insure, double the service interval of an RS4 and yet how often could you really exploit that 1 second quicker to 60 the Rs4 gives you? (Ok maybe every set of traffic lights) but hey .... the S4 is just so easy to live with as a daily

I got my new s4 in December 17, and what a car it is!!! I love how normal it looks from the outside, but when you put your foot down, it is immense. Love it!!

Your RS4 review helped me buy an RS4. I drove the S4 exactly spec’d like yours. S4 is 85% of an RS4 and in some ways it’s just as fun, as your foot is flat more in the S4. Great car, enjoy!

Mine is a 2014 and I’m not planning to change it. It has 55 k miles and I’ll keep it as long as it runs... love the supercharged engine!

I'm 60 soon and going to treat myself to an S4 Avant - I am on my second Seat Exeo ST ( Audi A4 B7 Re-Badged ) Great quality - My first went to 225k miles and my current one is on 180k. Love this review and watched your review on the new S4 with the diesel engine! If I can find a lower mileage petrol I would prefer that - budget £30K so i am sure I will find one later this year.

Love it, a real world review. We are not all boy racers who also take our cars on the track, some of us want the power but also the comfort and everyday usability. What about the next S4 which has been confirmed to have the diesel and mild hybrid engine? Personally, it sounds like the car that I have been waiting for.

I like you had an Audi S4 from 2015, ex demo from Sheffield Audi. I loved it. I knew a guy at Audi who told my a way to take to 414BHP without affecting warranty. And it also stopped the max speed. I drove a lot in Germany and really most of Europe. One thing to note, Get a driver's mirror for the passenger side. Not expensive, but really good. Buy that in Europe as more standard. If it is raining, and you want air, side skirts are handy, especially if a smoker. Great company in Poland distributes via eBay. Love your videos. I like the sound of it. What people do not understand is that it is not being able to afford or not car A, B or C. It is all down to personal preference and what actualy suits one better. The more power does not mean more fun or that it is the best for one. Shumacher daily driver for example was a diesel Fiat Croma but he could have loads of powerful cars as a daily car. My car that is my pride and joy is a 1995 Fiat Punto 1.2 8v running on LPG. I have spent money on it doing some upgrade just because I wanted to. People tell me that the money I have spent on it, I could have bought another car but what people do not understand is that I do not want or need other car. I love my car and I will not get rid of it for nothing nor for any other car. I have driven many many cars but not even a handful of them gives me the joy that my car does. Man, a 1.2 going the way it goes in the hilly Madeira island...give me lots of joy. It is 24 years old and it goes to MOT and passes with a clean sheet. Well, this is what I have to say. My personal opinion. Have fun with your toy!

I have a 2001 B5, 6 speed manual that I bought new (I pealed the plastic off the seats before my test drive). I also have a B8, 2014 6 speed manual transmission. The B5 is mint and timeless and the B8 is an awesome machine. I live in a ski town in the Rocky Mountains of the USA and both cars rip through the vast amounts of snow we get. Plus driving either one of these cars through the Rockies is more than enjoyable. I really enjoyed your video and please keep up the good work.

Off thread but reading through the other comments (as you do) you realise what type of people are subscribed to your channel and follow you, Petrolheads like yourself who just love and appreciate cars . Can’t wait to to meet some of them and you at your future meet and greet.

Had the B8 S4 for a while last year. Splendid car with amazing grip and a solid build. The performance was more than adequate for any situation I found myself in. While I do appreciate the RS4 as being more in every way, one has to think, how many times can you exploit that "more" on the roads legally without putting yourself, your license and others in danger?

Been to my local dealer today, Oxford Audi. I’m still considering one of these, S5 Sportback also. Turns out I’ve mulled it over too long. No longer available, both S4/5/6 and RS models no longer listed in the wake of WLTP, removed 8 months ago. They’ll be on sale again later in the year but the ‘S’ will be diesel only! Only the RS models will be petrol, if one can afford the price of entry. So that’s a bit of a downer. Keep hold of this Peter, dying breed.

Great video. The S4 looks fantastic and the interior is stunning. The exhaust note is awesome and I'm sure you'll never get tired of it. So glad that Mrs Petrol Ped and you are really enjoying it.

Audi switched to the 8speed ZF because they use it in nearly everything else… simplifying production across the line. The 7Speed DSG in the B8 certainly can take the power- there are plenty of 500+ tuned S4\S5s out there with 150k+ miles. The B9 is really nice all around - and the cross-stitched seats will look better over time - the leather in the B8\8.5 stretches around the seat pan and it doesn’t look as nice as it did new. The real deal breaker is the elimination of the 6speed manual with the B9 - for reason, I don’t see parting ways with my tuned 2016 B8.5.

Good review, I have the Saloon version and I totally agree with your comments, the car is ace, seats are absolutely wonderful (I have the Magna Red), and the sound from the exhaust and engine is spot on. I have fitted a K&N panel filter so it breathes a bit better. My previous car was a Golf R Estate, and my S4, is actually better on fuel !! On a trip up north to Blackpool fully loaded with 4 passengers I got over 40mpg, even my commute to work on the tiresome M4 I get 35+ which includes a quick boot passed all the middle land morons.

I have a b9 s4 saloon in white, stunning car, brilliant build,looks,sound,gearbox/engine and that interior,went a bit pervy and got red leather , hope u have set up Audi connect, it's brilliant,no Google maps on your display, it looks fantastic,enjoy your car mate,great channel, if u want a saloon for a comparison or suchlike for a video give us a yell.

Basically all I want is an A4 Allroad with an S4 power unit. . . . or an S4 with high wall tires and lifted suspension . I need a smooth ride:)

Congrats on your car. Love it! The ZF automatic gearbox is great. I had one on my BMW 320 series a few year ago. On my A6 Avant 3.0TDI V6 Quattro there is a s-tronic gear box, but it feels a little bit more chunky.

That S4 has better performance than my old M3, plus you can put both the dogs in the back.!. Looks and sounds like an amazing car. Congratulations 👍

Just sold my RS4 B8 Avant I had it for 12 months and spent a fortune, new discs and pads £2400, 4 tyres as you have to change all 4 at the same time on a Quattro £1200, new front shocks as they were leaking which is a problem on this model £2500 new brake lines x2 at £178.00 each. Oil service £480. I had fun in her but I cannot justify the expense the next main service was coming up in 3 thousand miles and that is £700 upwards. Insurance is a lot and I’m 56 with full no claims £650 and car tax is £540. And take into account the boy racers that fly up your rear to try and push you into doing the unthinkable. The moral of this story is don’t have a wife or girlfriend unless you have very deep pockets 😉

I can't say for sure about the S4, but I owned an S5 Sportback and after several months of ownership, I admitted to my mistake and got the RS5 SB. It's really that much better.

I had a B9 Avant for nearly 2 years, albeit a 3.0 TDI. It was a really nice car to drive although I wish it had had the Tiptronic gearbox instead of the S-Tronic because it was a little slow and dim at junctions. The other thing I would have liked was if the navigation screen folded away like the A6 etc, first world problems I know, but would have really finished the cabin off. The S4 sounds awesome, glad you love it!

You can do a longpull on the upshift paddle and it will go back to full automatic mode

Think the S/RS or Mlite/M argument applies to most models. 85 - 90% of the time, the S or Mlite is plenty for most people. It's the occasional 15% of the time you just wished for something a bit more special (That does come with a price tag however)

With a 500 eur tuning box you can make this car easily faster than stock Rs4

I was looking forward to this...i actually thought i had missed it. Didnt disappoint Peter...you really let it rip. Ive had my S4 for just over a Month now and still trying to get the seat to my liking...good luck with the mega tech Audi have thrown at the car. By the way i think the car sounds great...loud enough not to totally infuriate the neighbours. Happy motoring...

Loved it. Jealous as. Can’t wait for your thoughts on the rest of the car. Looks like it has grown up a bit as has your channel. Your B8 reviews have had me following ever since. Have got me thinking about upgrading mine.

I have averaged 28.5 MPG over 30K miles v 26.6 from my B8. The B9 is quicker, cheaper UK Road Tax (pre 4/17), much better tech, 19K Service Intervals. I would recommend the Matrix LEDs and B&O 3D Surround Sound as must have options. One of the best features is the subtle styling upgrades compared to an A4 S-Line yet 0-60 in 4.5 secs is achievable. ZF Auto feels quite different in Drive v Sport auto with Manual adding yet another dimension to your favourite B road. The only negative is the standard choice of colours is almost the same as the A4 - missed a trick there Audi.

It actually because of your Audi s4 estate ( in the USA we call them wagons) I’ve started saving to get a Audi A4 allroad. I figure it will make a great dad mobile and will work great for living out in the country like I do. Also winters here can come with a lot of snow.

S4 B9 Saloon owner. Best mate has RS4 Avant. The difference in speed is not that obvious in the RS4. The B9 styling is a bit too conservative though.

think a simple pulley upgrade on the B8 takes it to about 400 hp and to less than 5 sec 0-100 km/h . this one did it in 5.3

that really is a top spec s4, digital dashboard is a must, accompanied with the flat bottom steering wheel. And don't get me started on the seats, perfect s4 interior

I would say the S4 is probably the best car Audi makes. Understated but purposeful, slick at everything and a better /subtle kerb side appeal than the RS cars. It’s like the Golf Gti of the sports saloon/estate world. Personally I would choose the S4 over the Rs4. I find the RS cars so hit and miss and just a bit Bling over substance. Great video ! That sat nav position though is just naff!

I really want one of these one day. Its a shame they are quite hard to find in Australia. The sedan is way more common, but the Avant is the better choice.

Bmw has the same issue with the dual clutch in the big torquey m5. Couldn't handle the power so now it uses the zf 8 speed torque converter auto.

Quick ECU tune and you have all the power you need.

Good video. Given you cannot even order an S or RS in the UK right now, used is the way to go. However RS models will always be the pinnacle! Just a bit more special..

It's a stunning car, 15k down in mine. No launch control, but just sit on the electronic handbrake and floor it and you will be at the speed limit. My only wish would be a sports exhaust option with it, but prefer the quad pipes to the RS ovals as a look.

First off, great review. I've got the S4 B9 Avant myself and I love it. Really disappointed with Audi's decision to go diesel with the new one and it may force me to move back to Merc or spend the extra £20k on the RS4, which you rightly concluded (in my opinion) isn't worth it with our S4. Also, and I would have sent you this privately if I could, you may want to check your speedo at 12:56, 14:37, and edit accordingly. ;). Potentially look at camera placement so that it's hidden by the wheel, or just blur out. Just an observation - please don't take it as a criticism!

I've got a 2008 4.2l v8 s5 but I'm changing it very soon for a 2017 s4 avant very soon. Love your videos :-)))

Thanks for the video, awesome review, and comparison. I always feared going from my Supercharged B8 S4 to the newer modes with the turbo. I'm sure I will feel the slight difference because the pressure that has to build up in the turbo, but it doesn't sound like a deal breaker. I may upgrade this summer :)

Great video! Glad you're enjoying the S4. Have had mine over a year now coming from a Golf R. Haven't looked back since. Just a heads up, but I spotted on mine recently that it'll sometimes default away from Google Maps during driving, giving the display similar to 3:05. If you go into the Nav menu (I think right click), it'll take you to map options, giving you Google Maps whilst you drive. Not sure if it's to do with how densely populated the surrounding area is and apologies if you already twigged this. Hope it helps and safe driving!

It is a nice car.. but for simplicity I love my MANUAL Audi s4 b8 avant. With a few upgrades. Rs4 ovals with backbox. And a stage 2 mrc with all the add ons.( large crank with small grip belt, large intake k&n filter and the map) It's a wonderful thing. But the b9 is nice.

Your well aware I’m in love with this car just blows me away and it looks fabulous find another car in that price range that looks this good and goes like stink it would be a massive struggle. It does sound pretty nice, again as I’ve mentioned before I love the colour. Funny though I thought it was only the RS versions that reverted to torque converter transmissions.

Absolutely love my 2018 (B9) S4 as well! We don't get the RS4 here in Canada. The S4 is a perfect family vehicle from my perspective. I do wonder why the 2019 S4 has slightly less HP than ours...?
