Driving our campervan to Turkey (what was it like?)

Our time in the Schengen Zone is up!
A whole year of planning and UK lockdowns rebuilding our van has all been leading up to this. We’ve been on a mission to drive our van across Europe and onto the Asian continent. VANLIFE TURKEY HERE WE COME!
With news of the new Omicron Covid variant materialising, and rumours of other countries closing or tightening restrictions at their borders, we decided to go for it and cross into Turkey whilst we still can. We didn’t want to take any risks getting stuck in Europe and overstaying on our 90-day Schengen Visa if we got stuck in Greece.
The fact we had to do the border crossing at night added a bit of tension to the whole situation too and despite having all the documents we thought we needed we were feeling a tad bit nervous!
Our bright orange home on wheels has never been this far from British soil before and it feels like a big step for us. The border crossing was HUGE and a bit intimidating but keep watching in the video to find out if we made it across ok and what we got up to on the journey from the European side of Turkey across the Dardanelles Strait where we touch down in Asia!

I fell in love with Turkey in 1966 when I crossed the country from Bulgaria to Syria in a Volkswagen laundry van with 6 friends. I've been back 4 more times over the years. Your video brought back some wonderful memories. I'm excited to follow the rest of your time there.

I think maybe you missed some videos? There is a playlist of all our turkey videos altogether and then there is others from our time in Greece and Europe before that. But at that time we were not posting weekly so the videos are not as consistent.

Nice Vlog and welcome to Turkey ;9 This Shell what you find we called PINA ...you can eat it rear with olive oil..lemon..Salt and Pepper but normaly the last years its forbidden because the population is going down to take it from his Habitat but you find it on the beach so I think fisher have take it out ... ;) with this kind of emmpty shells you can make a great Light ...

I see you crossed into Turkey on my 81st birthday. Well I crossed from Greece into Turkey on our way to Israel in 1964 aged 23. How times have changed, I found your border crossing interesting to yesteryear. When we crossed Greece and Turkey were having a spat over Cyprus a potential war zone with troops both sides being moved towards the border. Went over the top of our heads and we just had heaps of fun with rather both sides, dumb Kiwis lol. I loved Turkey but have never had the opportunity to return. Turks are really lovely people. Enjoy your time, I will be waiting to follow your trip xx

Belated Happy 81st birthday Val! 🥳 The border crossing was really interesting for us as we've never done a large land border of that size before! Glad it bought back memories for you too. How much time did you spend in Israel back then? You have travelled some amazing places in your time, haven't you!

You chose an interesting route, normally most people go ditectly to Istanbul in order to cross to the Asian side and roads are much better there compared to Galipoli. However, hopefully within the next few years with the current infrastructure upgrades (like the bridge you've seen in Galipoli and the new autobahn to be builded there) the Galipoli region will develop quickly. Anyways, welcome to Turkey and enjoy your time here 🙂

We decided not to go straight to Istanbul. We prefer the countryside and wanted to get south as quickly as possible to try and find the last of the sunshine before Christmas. We may visit Istanbul on the way back towards Bulgaria in a couple of months or we might fly there are some point internally within turkey if we are in the mood for a city break. We have heard it is a great city!

Hi Ian! Thank you so much for your first comment, we're so happy you're here for the journey! It's so awesome to be with them, they are a wonderful pair of humans, plus coop brings all the fun haha. We still need to phone the Greek garage to speak to them about it but the Turkish Mercedes garage doesn't think it is an official Mercedes garage 🤯. It looks like the van garage where we got the work done is just attached to a Mercedes dealership, which if it is the case is incredibly sneaky! We'll know more by the time the next video is out!
