Driving Palm Springs modern neighborhoods such as Vista Las Palmas, Racquet Club Road Estates and Twin Palms Estates is a great way to view the architectural work and unique appeal of these mid century modern desert homes in Palm Springs California.
And you don't have to wait for Palm Springs Modernism Week to enjoy and appreciate these real estate gems. You can drive through these neighborhoods anytime you are vacationing in the desert and looking for things to do in Palm Springs. Don't feel like driving? There are organized bike tours and Vista Las Palmas is a great walk too.

A little background on what's in this video.
Many of these properties were designed by Palmer and Krisel and built by the Alexander Construction Company. The famous architect Charles Dubois added his unique touch with his Swiss Chalet A Frame homes also known as Swiss Miss.
The Alexander homes often feature butterfly rooflines and other interesting modern architectural flourishes as do the examples built by Jack Meiselman which are rarer.
The Vista Las Palmas neighborhood is located west of downtown Palm Springs and set against a gorgeous mountain backdrop amidst lush landscaping and soaring palm trees. Other than the modern cars you see on the driveways, you might think you stepped back in time to an earlier era. That's because the homeowners era have really gone out of their way to maintain authentic mid century looking homes. You'll find your usual mix of celebrity homes here and we stop by the famous Elvis Presley honeymoon house on the drive.
Further east you find the homes in Racquet Club Road Estates - more commonly known as Racquet Club Estates. These properties tend to be smaller than in Vista Las Palmas with original floor plans of around 1225 Sq Ft. Many of these properties were originally used as weekend getaways. Even though the interior of these houses tend to be very similar, the varying rooflines make the neighborhood visually interesting and it definitely doesn't look like your typical collection of tract homes.
Going further south we get to Twin Palms Estates - not to be confused with Frank Sinatra's original Palm Springs home which is in the Movie Colony area.
Twin Palms Estates was the first tract built by the Alexander Construction Company in Palm Springs. The homes are 1600 Sq Ft and each came with two palm trees on the property - hence the name. On huge 10,000 Sq Ft lots and often with mountain views, these properties are highly desirable today.
Actually, houses in all of these communities are much sought after and in addition to being great places to live, owner are buying a piece of history.
