I bought my 2009 XF fully loaded. Has a 4.2 V8. Extremely great acceleration. Excellent materials were used on the manufacturing of my vehicle. I'm totally satisfied.
Great to hear your comparison of the XFs. I've had my 2010 for 4 months and love it, it is the best car I have ever owned. It soothes you after a long day. I have just ordered some of those LED number plate lights that you showed in your earlier video. Keep up the good work.
Great video again Hilton, I went from a 2010 xf 3.0d to a 2017 3.0d xfs. Your right the new 3.0 jag is a beast but the feel and luxury and cabin noise was so much better in my old Jag. Apart from the grunt and all of the tech (10" pro screen and interactive driver display dials etc.) I'm very disappointed and miss my old Jag (x250)although the front end in my opnion is starting to look a little dated now. Anyway keep up the great work and keep the mods coming!
Thanks Julian. Unfortunately Jaguar decided not to bring the 3.0D to South Africa. The previous one was very expensive due to the exchange rate and our pathetic currency so it didn't sell well. Only an enlightened few knew it was better than the 3.0 s/c and bought it instead. I wish I'd know about it when I bought my 3.0 petrol years ago. But I still enjoyed it 😊
Hi Hilton , ive just bought a 15 plate XFS 3.0litre d and thanks to you im really looking forward to picking it up and driving it home on friday .love the channel so informative .Many thanks Dave.
Good choice Dave. Make sure it has full service history and the cambelt has been changed and check for any DPF issues with whoever serviced it in the past. But that car is a beast 😉
Great comparison Hilton - glad to know I am in the best XF - have a X250 XF 2015 3.0D V6 S Portfolio Twin Turbo with 110,000km - best car I have ever had & absolutely love it - hope to have it for many years to come / love your reviews - keep up the good work thanks
Thanks Hilton very good insight and review. I have had a XE 2L D 2018 model in white, it's very good but I much prefer my XF S 3L V6 2009 the same colour as your old XF "Pearl Grey". It's much more powerful than the XE my XF is producing now 300bhp but the luxury is so much more Jag. My friends call it a sleeper car as they didn't know how rapid it was.
Thanks Ray. Yup, you have the beast. It's a fantastic car and to get one here in SA is a very scarce thing indeed. They only came in S here and we're all snapped up very quickly. I couldn't find a low mileage one in white though. It's beautiful in white with that spoiler. Stunning!
Another great video Hilton. I have had my 2011 XF 3l diesel for three years.112, 000 miles, no probs. Totally amazing car.I am considering updating to a 2.2 diesel XF R Sport. You've given me food for thought, maybe I'll do a bit more research before taking the plunge. Keep up the good work.
Please just test drive the 2.2 before you buy. It's nothing like the 3l Diesel. If I were you, I'd keep my 3l Diesel. It's better looking and way way more powerful. The new XF doesn't come with the 3l Diesel which is sad.
If the DPF fails, folks over here in Northern Europe often just get a DPF delete done. Costs much less than DPF replacement and your power goes up & fuel consumption down. Combine that with a fuel map reprogramming, the diesel is hard to beat...
Thanks for that interesting comment. I had no idea a DPF delete was even an option. I think in the UK it would probably cause issues when the car must go for MOT each year - it would probably fail the emissions tests not so?
The MOT emissions tests don't measure particles, only gaseous matter like NOx, hydrocarbons etc. When they do a DPF delete they include a software modification to the ECU that removes the DPF related stuff, so there's no error codes given through the OBD scan either in an MOT. They're actually most ahead with these modifications in the UK, and give guarantees for passing the MOTs. The EGR is another thing that can be deleted, that also improves the efficiency, people who have done DPF, EGR and stage 1 reprogramming have gotten to significant fuel savings, torque and power comes along too 😊
Thank you for your detailed opinion and review! After Audi ownership (A6 3.2 quattro), I decided to sell it off due to reoccurring electrical issues. When looking for a comparable vehicle, I searched for newer A6 models and the 5 series, as I‘m not a big fan of the E-class. Since I always loved the original XF, I decided to get one. They are still special and quite exotic compared to the Audis and BMWs. Right now I‘m in negotiations with two dealerships and I‘m waiting for a good deal. Watching your videos encouraged me in my decision. Cheers mate and all the best!
Thanks for watching. Buying an XF will be your best purchase ever. You are going to fall in love with that car and realize just how reliable it can be. I've had Audi's as well and am still fond of Audi, but the Jag is just a level above.
I not driven the new XF but its nice to hear about how you find it mate. I have had the pleasure of a 48 hour loan of the f type that was just beautiful drive very precise and so much power.
@@carfanfan yes I heard that also next weekend I ha e an I citation to drive their all electric SUV for weekend I'm.to.much of a.petrol head will have to be exilant I up date you

You are going to love that car. You will continuously look for reasons to drive it. And washing it will be a labor of love. Congratulations on your purchase. I wish you happy motoring for many years to come in your new XF. 😊
Really delighted that you’ve come back to the XF! I have a facelifted 2015 X250 Portfolio 2.2d remapped to 240bhp, which is just fine for twisty Kent roads in the UK. I looked at all 3 incarnations of the XF before I bought this one second hand from a Jaguar dealer at 21k miles. It’s got the best from the original (great leather seats and dash, r/l handed centre console, proper woodgrain all round etc.) plus the upgrades (Bi-xenons, smooth looking DRLs, LED rear lights etc.) I’ve driven the X260 a couple of times as a courtesy car from the dealer, but haven’t really enjoyed driving it. Piano black instead of wood, one-size fits all centre console, fake leather on the dash & doors etc. - it also just feels more cramped inside than the X250. One plus is that it soaks up the bumps better than mine, but I can live with the firmer drive. Keep up the good work Hilton.
I agree Anthony. I would have gotten an x250 if there was one with low mileage but they're so damn popular I couldn't find one. Oddly, I still drool when I see an older XF even while I'm sitting in my new one. 😊
I absolutely adore my 3.0 D S...………..you can drive it like an old timer or like a 20 year old...…….It has more than enough power for me, never once have I got close to its maximum...……and I have pushed it...……..it overtakes like a rocket...………...and I still feel like royalty every time I get in it. I did test drive a 2,2 D but it only had a 6 speed gearbox and was a bit "agricultural" to me, not what a Jaguar should feel like.
I have a 2015 XF r-sport 2.2 (your previous review & insights actually tipped me over the edge at the time, so thanks!) and the "lag" is the same if you really want it to go from stand still - upset a van driver on a roundabout as it completely caught me off guard (I'm pretty inexperienced driving, so really wasn't expecting what seemed like an eternity for it to sodding move an inch). However if it's in sport mode/manual gearing, it's not been an issue for me. Although there's always going to be some lag, it seems the real lag is with the gearbox engaging - in sport it's a non-issue *shrugs* - got to say, love the 8 speed gearbox, it's so silky smooth. I don't personally find my version underpowered; it's really chirpy esp midrange, but admittedly I haven't driven a huge range of cars. I had the choice to get a 2017 XF diesel within what I was willing to spend (wasn't actually much more on the approved scheme), I just don't like the interior as much - it's not bad, it's a wonderful place to be, but all the flashy toys isn't what made me fall for the XF.
Thanks for your feedback. If you drive the 2.2 on its own it's great, but if you drive that and then drive a 2.0l turbo Petrol, you'll see what I mean. The turbo lag is something both suffer from unfortunately. I'll try using manual mode as I've never done that. So let's see if it's more responsive 🤔😉
My car is a 2014 Sportbrake y rsport trim. I was looking to replace it in BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Range Rover, and of course also in Jaguar. At the very end I bought a Mazda miata rf mx5. Impossible to say by to my jag. So, I enjoy both cars and think will last for long. The conclusion of all this is that I understand very well your regrets. The old model represents better my mod.
Wow. Surprising comparison. I was expecting you to say the newer model was better in every way. But not so. Love driving my 2011 XF S diesel (except for the front seats). You've inspired me to make it last. No problems with the DPF after 130kkms. But mostly open road driving. I imagine short-trip city driving would wreck a DPF pretty quick. Petrol is the better pick for urbanites.
Hey Thomas. 2011 XF is the best year. It had a few updates from the 2009/2010 especially on software and the head unit. I've driven a 3l Diesel and was amazed at the low down grunt and sheer acceleration. That's why I call it The Beast because I'm sure it would run away from a 3.0 s/c quite easily. I'd love to see a drag race between the two some time. Perhaps o should ask carwow to do one.
Great comparision, exactly what I was looking for. Just thought I'd mention, Diesel Particulate Filters (dpfs) can be very expensive, but they very rarely fail and usually just need cleaning.
Yes, I should have mentioned that the DPF usually gives issues with small trips with low speed. They clean themselves out when doing lots of highway mileage, but realistically, we all do short trips to the shops most of the time and this makes the dpf very unhappy 😂
If the new one had the first generation back end the second generation side profile with the 3rd generation front and the 1st generation interior ! It would be perfect !!!!! Though I imagine the overall tech and handling is far superior now :) Great review
A brilliant video Hilton. Loved the dual camera approach. It is fascinating seeing around your city area. It's hard to beat the original XF on looks alone. I even preferred my last Tucson (ix35) over the new model, mostly for aesthetic reasons (to look down on people lol :-) Joking! Your new XF looks fab, especially in the silver colour. I try to remember to switch off my stop/start every journey. It's bound to cause extra wear and tear over the years. I must take your advice on board when I next change my car and consider a saloon. Happy motoring ;-)
Hey Andi, my friends used to tease me about looking down on people for having bought the CX-5 so I just had to insert a dig at them. I enjoyed the seating position of an SUV and easier to get in and out of, but saloons really are good these days, the E class, the A6, the 5 series, the S60 - Lexus has lost the plot though with that grille, but they are all masterpieces of engineering and it's a pity they'll all die off some day. I don't even think Jaguar will replace the XF - it will be the last as they bring in more electric vehicles. Enjoy your holiday in Portugal - the sun will make you feel alive again ;-)
@@carfanfan HI. I have just returned from the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, England where I went to see the annual classic car show. Over 3,000 classic cars and many from the 1960's, 70's and even 80's. Many old Jags, X-type and XJ the most popular. A wonderful standard of refurbished and totally restored older cars that were popular in the UK in their day. One of my favourite cars was the actual white Volvo P1800 driven by the late Sir Roger Moore in 'The Saint' tv series of the 60's. A fantastic day away but very sore on the feet! :-)
@@AndrewKNI You lucky fella! I love the Volvo P1800. I used to want one as a kid, a toy model ofcourse, but my mom could never find one for me. They are still beautiful to look at today.
As you Jeffrey my XF is the best car I have ever owned I have three models only problem now is my current Jag is the 3-0 D S Sport brake and to be truthful I cannot see another Jaguar that’s better , could try the F-pace but SUVs are not my preference if I buy a new Sportbrake I only really paid out thousands to end up with the same as I have got now but newer model can’t see the point.
I have a 2010 XFS (3.0 turbo 275 BHP). It is a beast in terms of power. Leather, wood and metal everywhere. Pure luxury. The only things I don't like is turbo lag in Normal mode and the seats are not sport type so no lateral bolstering. The DPF hasn't exploded yet so fingers crossed! The car I actually really miss is the petrol 2.5 X-Type AWD (2001), I think that was a better-looking car but it was very expensive on petrol.
Hey Alex. Start saving for the DPF because it will need replacing around 60,000 miles. But you have an awesome XF because the 3l Diesel is the pick of the bunch. The turbo lag is something we have to live because we love these cars 😉
@@carfanfan 60000 miles? Haha! I'm on 224000km already. I do hear something loose in the drivetrain especially on acceleration but the dealer can't work out what it is so I'll just live with it...
@@alexbowers4203 Agree, if you regen the DPFs they are fine. I have the same V6S but remapped to >300bhp and im on 84k miles with no issues with the DPF. Im gonna change to either an XE or XF on about 6mths so thanks for the review Hilton.
I very much enjoyed the honesty of your review. May I ask what year your older Jaguar XF was, the one with the head lights slightly curved. Many thanks and look forward to more reviews. In England the 1st XF was from 2008 / 2011 PS I must say preferred the look of your older model too. Cheers Hilton.
Funny you were saying about slow pulling away, I'm in the habit of manually changing down to 1st at stop junctions then holding change up to get it back to auto after hitting a reasonable speed, but it was weird at first... That it leaves the car in 2nd when stopping.. very strange
Yeah. I think it's programmed so it only goes to 1st gear on steep hills or for sport mode. But still, it's odd they do that in economy mode since it takes more gas to get the car off the line 😊
Thanks so much for a very relaxed review of the xf old and new. I am presently looking for one for my son ( hes 52 and I'm 80). he has a Honda Civic, but a couple of his friends have bought the fx and although my impression of Jaguar has not been so good, I am being converted by the various reviews I have seen. like this. I even fancy one myself. In general, The xf 2016 Portfolio seems favorite within budget and although he only drives a moderate mileage (8-10k} he said he wants a diesel rather than petrol, but you say the saving is balanced by the servicing costs? Wec were looking at 2L, but your indication the a 3L may be better is interesting. We need to drive a few models and at present we are in lockdown like many others. I dont want to buy without trying first, before the 14 day return policy as well. What is the crossover from OLD to NEW date? Look forward to seeing more of your reviews soon.
Hey Malcom. Thanks for your comment. The cross over from X250 to X260 was 2015 although most X260's were probably registered in 2016. The 3L diesel is a monster and very powerful. It's diesel consumption is only marginally higher than the 2L and for the massive difference in power it makes sense to get the 3L. The DPF on these cars do give trouble if you only do town driving. It usually requires a good blast on the freeway to clean itself out properly at least once a week. The petrols are very good too. I've owned a 3L V6 petrol, 2L petrol and now the XFR 5.0 supercharged petrol. All three are wonderful cars to drive and powerful. The XFR is the beast of the range and the XFRS is simply insane. The newer XF 2015 and up is a good car, but interior quality of materials used is not as good as the older XF. Ford America engineered the older XF so it has real wood, the best leather and real aluminum on the interior. The new one uses fake leather, black trim plastics they call piano black and some real aluminum here and there. I wasn't impressed with the X260 over the older car which is why I switched from my 2016 X260 back to an older 2011 XFR X250. They drive very differently too which is why you must drive both to evaluate which suits you best. The older XF X250 received an 8 speed gearbox in 2014 over the 6 speed but both are XF and very good gearboxes. BMW and Audi use the exact same gearboxes so they are tried and tested. They can also be serviced easily by anyone. The Forums are a great source of information too and one gets an idea of what issues other owners are having. Doesn't mean yours will give the same trouble. I've had my old XFR for a year now and done many trouble free miles. Not even one issue has raised it's head. They are underrated and thus the best kept secret 😉. Just make sure whichever one you buy, it has full service history. Any car that hasn't been looked after will become a headache.
Great Video my choice has been made I have an early XF S I am keeping I have driven BMW's for a while the last one being the 330 Ci M-sport manual great car to drive for the Sunday morning B road blast with great looks however the XF gives you the best of both worlds sporty B road fun and a great long haul companion and stunning to look at. for me it has that fizz........??
Hard to figure out what Jaguar's strategy is, I wondered about it too when I saw the change in the interior design langue. I'm a millenial (born in mid 80's, millenials are the people born from early 80's to about mid 90's), and I think that the materials and finish along with the ride quality are important in a premium car like the XF, but I don't call cars like these luxury cars. A luxury car to me means more like a GT car, maybe a Porsche model, a 7-series, certainly the R-R's and the Bentleys. The "premium cars" like my x250 are basically Mondeos with nicer materials 🙂 People ten years younger to me though, who still are millenials, do care about cars and driving much less in general but I do not understand how making supposed premium models more like run of the mill cars would increase their sales as there's nothing to justify the higher price anymore. The driver assist features, mobile phone mirroring etc stuff you can get on a Ford Focus. The young people of today who were born in say the year 2000 or later, they don't even get driving licenses much, let a alone have money for new cars, Fords or Jaguars, unfortunately, with the gig economy 😕
Thanks for your insights. Very interesting to get feedback from a millennial. I've noticed a small group of millennials do in fact love cars and car culture and know the difference between real luxury and technology, but most do not. In fact, most aren't even bothered to get a license because they have Uber and Lyft to get them where they want to be. However, I disagree that an XF is a Mondeo with nicer materials. The XF was designed a built on its own chassis and a Mondeo will never come anywhere close to the handling and poise of an XF - it was designed for true 50/50 weight distribution by Ian Callum and the XF was Jaguar's first departure from the old stable of boxy looking cars. The X250 was and is still the only Jaguar they designed which imbues true Jaguar qualities. Yes, Ford owned Jaguar when the X250 was designed and they did use some existing technology that was tried and tested in the Ford Crown Victoria, one of the most reliable cop cars on America's roads, but it was still a unique car to Jaguar only and Jaguar even used their own engines in these cars and Ford left them alone to basically do what they do and they did it well. Tata's influence on Jaguar has unfortunately come to the fore in the X260 and Jaguar had better address that with the X270 otherwise a great sedan will have come and gone because it's dying a slow and painful death. I don't think Jaguar will ever see the success again that they had with their X250.
Well I exaggerated there with my comparison, but I did have an Mk4 Mondeo before with a factory installed stiffer suspension and that car had amazing handling, I even got decent lap times on two race tracks taking the power/weight ratio into account (250 hp 2.5 l petrol engine). It didn't of course have the same comfort level as the x250, for travelling somewhere on a long route I'd pick the Jaguar any day. There's some track videos on my profile, although they were before I modded the exhaust so the car sounds like a diesel on those videos 😅
Hi Hilton regarding the dpf on my 3 litre V6 , a amber warning light will appear in relation to dpf regeneration, a 20-30 straight run will regenerate the dpf. I believe that if the fuel tank has less than a quarter of fuel the amber warning will not appear. Instead it will be replaced with a red warning to visit the dealer and also the car will go into restricted power. Unfortunately this happened to me, I was fearing a expensive replacement, my local garage flushed the dpf which cost £50. My advice to a person who is contemplating either diesel or petrol is if the majority of your driving is stop start short journeys purchase a petrol model, driving longer more frequent distance opt for the diesel and on such journeys the dpf will regenerate and will not be a issue. My 3 litre V6 is amazing, it is a absolute joy, ignore the 2 litre, 2.7 litre.....3 litre diesel is by far the best choice. Ps....I am loving your new Jag Hilton, I hope it is giving you great pleasure.
Thanks Gary. I sold my new XF for an older X250 XF. Got the XFR now and I love, love, love it. I'm currently having the wheels and tires sorted so next week, the car will be able to leap across the freeways again ;D. You are right, in summary, 3L diesel is a beast and should be bought if your commute is long, if you do mostly city driving, get a petrol. Good point my friend ;)
JagFan Hilton Sorry I worded my reply wrong, l over your new old car 🤔 I watched your video, I love the Polaris white, cannot wait hear your thoughts when the wheels are sorted, one amazing car the XFR, best wishes to you Hilton.
100% You totally get my review. Both cars are good, it's just a question of which of the two defined luxuries you want. Unfortunately, you don't get both in either of them. So a choice is inevitable.
@@carfanfan I think Jaguar realised, that the average age of their customers was somewhere between 70 and the graveyard. They wanted to get younger enthusiasts, customers, from this perspective, the X260 moved to the right direction. Exterior design of the X260 is dynamic, unique, unmistakable, the cabin, IMO is a step back from the X250. Infotainment of the X260 is in the space age compared to the X250. It's really a hard choice. Anyway... I chose 416 BHP over Apple car play. ... Damn, I should build a bigger garage to fit both of them in... :)
@@carfanfan XFR! WOW! Do you really mean 5.0 SC? That's a lot of a car, hope to see it soon! Take a good look aroud, watch for the traps, but if You find a well kept kitty, it'll turn the globe beneath the weels... I'm really curious!
Speaking as a millennial (albeit a resistant one): I would say there is some truth to what you are saying re contrast in perception of luxury.. However I know there is (potentially a minority) group who love the styling and feel of the old jags with a lot of appreciation for the X-types and early XF amongst the same group... I ended up buying a 2012 XF 3 liter V6 myself a number of years ago and have recently been thinking about trading in for a newer one but the style and the build quality of the newest XF's just don't appeal to me as much sadly outside of the F-type...
Good to hear you got an XF. They are underrated. Unfortunately, the car companies are catering for the masses and those few of us that still appreciate the finer things in life for what they actually are, are no longer considered. SUV's were born due to the masses wanting them. So manufacturers started making them. Now there's an SUV for every segment. Very sad that not only is the internal combustion engine's days number, but also the sedan. Imagine how bland the world will be years from now.
Hej Hilton, Do you know by any chance if its possible to "uprgade" the old 2010 headlights with the facelift Version from the new jags? (2012/13 i guess sry not sure) Gr8 Video as always, love to hear your opinion :)
Yes you can, but it's a big change. You must change the fenders, hood, grill, front bumper and front valance. It's too expensive to bother. You get kids that make it look more so which is a cheaper option
Here's two links to two videos that should help you. @@asemarida3503 yeah, the dealer's can order it from factory for you. If you Google it you will also find other outlets that sell it. Just Google the part number 😉
You must be sensitive to acceleration instead of pulling power. I am a diesel fan and feel my 2 l diesel XF has plenty of poke. And if you drive long distances at least once a month the DPF never needs replacing.
Thanks for your insights David. If you have any more information on your diesel, please do share it here for other potential buyers to take into account 👍
Hi guys, I am soon going to be in the market to buy a nice older model car. Ten years ago I had an Audi A8 and prior to that an SL Merc but this time I want something different. I live in Johannesburg, south Africa and have a spend limit of Rands 400,000.00 . I would love some impartial input from those on this group more mechanically competent than I because I can't decide between the following marques. What I enjoy is comfort and grace with a good turn of speed, reliability is a major consideration. Jaguar, either XF, XK or other. Can be 2 door but would prefer 4. Anything from a 3 litre to a 5 litre, can be petrol or diesel. Lexus, I am considering the IS 350 a GS 350 or the larger LS models. Volvo, S 80 or V 80 Infinity G 37 or Q 50 What ever it is it will be a model with low mileage and full service history. Any unbiased input that you could offer to help with my ultimate decision would be grateful appreciated. Kind regards Stevie Davies
I would consider getting a 2014-2015 Jaguar XF V8. The V6 suffers from continuous coolant leaks as the hoses grow older and perish, but the V8's are pretty robust and if you drive it carefully, surprisingly light on fuel.
Hilton Yes, you’re right. But If I buy a new car My car would be the new XF with the V6 Supercharged. This is a Great alternative. The engine is Jaguar worthy
Yeah I just had a subscriber telling me he just bought a diesel 2.2d and it went into restricted mode just after he bought it. I told him I suspect the DPF is full. He took it to a mechanic who confirmed the DPF needs replacing. It's an expensive part of maintenance he could have done without after just buying the car. Service history is very important on all these cars.
