Bala was my commuter station, from the early 60s through the mid-70s. The earliest I can remember, the line was a 2 track system, with station houses on both sides. The outbound side had a house attached to the station, and I can remember there were PRR employee's family living there, tending flower beds. I spent many a minute waiting on the inbound side in the waiting room, which was dark, and a little dingy. There was a ticket office on that side to buy your 10-strip, and the waiting room had a coal-burning stove to heat the place. Mahogany benches along the side walls, like those in 30th St. Used to catch MP-54s, and the first generation Silverliners inbound & outbound, on my way to school. I had an aunt who worked the ticket office @ Suburban, so there was always a stop into the ticket office there to say hello, before catching the 3:30 Manayunk home. In rush hour, the Manayunk ran about every 25-30 minutes. 52nd St. station was still a stop then, during rush hour, and I remember them building the Wynnefield Ave. stop.
she is still underpower at overbrook along with the other 2..i see them everytime i have class..i am still trying to get info as to why tht is..awesome video!!
7:35 nice hammer down acceleration. I'm not sure about the Silverliner III cars like the one in this video, but the Budd Silverliner IIs cars could accelerate at almost 2 mph / second. Not bad for a car that weighs 101,000 lbs and "only" has around 500 horsepower.
i kinda figured it would be too much for them..many still sit at overbrook and at the race street yard...indeed i shall..yeah these are great machines..i think with the right funding/time they could be rebuilt again..i mean they were built to last :-)
Scrap dealer can't handle what he bought. Keep an eye out for any preservation donation drives and give all you can to save one or more of these great machines.
