Useful video for learners. A lot of the faults seem to be related to lack of planning far ahead, like looking too late at roundabouts (stopping then looking) and not looking round / through the corner to judge the sharpness. Probably also related to the positioning issue, if you are not looking far ahead then there will typically be positioning issues as you notice things too late.

At 12.38 the SatNav says "in 300 yards CROSS THE ROUNDABOUT - third exit". In tom tom talk, cross the roundabout means follow the road ahead. If the tom tom said "go right at the roundabout - third exit" that would require a lane change on approach because it is a right turn as disclosed. If you are confused look at the map on the unit. If tom tom says "go right at the roundabout second exit" it is not telling you to follow the road ahead. The unit always tells you the direction of turn at roundabouts, "go left at the roundabout" "go right at the roundabout" and "cross the roundabout" and then discloses the exit number it is a simple system. The first bit is very important to think about as it gives advice on which lane and signalling. The exit number is very important once you get to the roundabout. Cross the roundabout confuses many people who do not speak tom tom. At 15.20 the "Go right at the roundabout - second exit" is because it does not include the bus/cycle route as an exit. Refer to the map if you are confused.

Hi Howard, really good video. I have a question, in the video where he was in the right hand lane and wanted to move into the left lane. Should a driver not check his mirrors and then apply a left hand signal to inform others that he's looking to get into the left lane? Or is it like when you're moving off and vehicles are approaching from your right side and you wait until they have passed, then signalling if necessary. not confusing them. But here how would the driver confirm his intentions to get into that left lane without signalling. Maybe if it was a long stretch of road and he had plenty of time then he could wait for a safe gap when cars on his left were a reasonable distance away and then mirror checks, signal and move into left lane. But if it's only a short distance and he wishes to get into the left lane but vehicles are preventing him, how could he achieve it? As sometimes those drivers in the left lane will realise his intentions and give way. Could you please give me some advice, thanks Howard
@How-2-drive
@How-2-drive 5 лет назад
Thanks, yes I see what you mean. If he'd signalled then the other drivers may hold back and let him in. Svet was looking for the vehicle to pass and then wanted to get back over. By the time this had happened I advised him to stay in lane as soon the Sat Nav would ask him to turn right.
@Dan1418
@Dan1418 5 лет назад
12:25 should be a serious fault as he turned into the wrong lane. The correct way is first turn into the right lane as he was originally in the right lane, then signal left to the left lane.
@LiveFreeAndLoveNSN
@LiveFreeAndLoveNSN 5 лет назад
you're right but if he checked his mirrors before turning into the left lane and saw it was safe to move over, then it's fine. if he hadn't of checked or if there was someone on his inside turning into that lane then yeah it would have been a serious. but the examiner would have been able to see whether he checked mirrors before he did it and whether there were any vehicles behind him that could have put them in a dangerous situation.

I nearly always do what he does at 9:45. I rarely use the handbrake, even on hills. This is because the car I use, I can rely on using the brake and clutch to pull away safely without any roll back. However would this be a fault at all if I were to do this ? Thanks again :)
@How-2-drive
@How-2-drive 5 лет назад
No its not a fault as long as you are in full control of your vehicle. If waiting its best practice to use handbrake to reduce wear on the clutch. If a PAUSE turns into a WAIT = Handbrake

A mock test where you are getting help from the examiner? I find these mock tests are never as real as the real thing.
@turtletrading4207

9:45 Who does that? I would have instantly failed if I was pressing my clutch with brake without selecting neutral each time I stop. 11:25 this is not a driving fault at all because the student is not endangering anyone in this case. It's a perfectly legal move. I kinda stopped watching from there on.
@How-2-drive
@How-2-drive 5 лет назад
Thanks for commenting. Its NOT a driver fault to leave in gear with the footbrake on whilst waiting on a UK test. It is however best practice to secure the vehicle and release the brakes to be courteous to drivers behind and reduce your risk of being shunted forwards. The second comment you make about lane choice - NO, if there are 2 lanes going in the same direction then we should use the left lane as we drive on the left. If we wait in lane 2 and the lights change green we potentially are causing the flowing traffic to pass on the left, therefore a risky undertake. Its a bit like driving up a 2 lane dual carriageway in lane 2 without making progress, inviting drivers in lane 1 to pass on the left. Hope this clears up some of your concerns over driving standards?

@@How-2-drive Maybe I misunderstood the nature of the fault. There is no problem taking either lane in this case as long as we enter the same lane after the corner. The student exited into the left lane right away while taking the right lane as an entry. In that case the fault you gave him is justified. When he entered the right lane he should have just continued driving in the right lane and then changed to the left lane once he is on the new road by signaling, mirror check and so on. To sum it up his entry was not the problem to me, it was the exit.
