Man, I finally got a chance to get in an Atom 3 this summer on a small french race track. It was amazing, so .... ufo, not seen or felt ever before. That whine felt like it wanted to suck the helmet, hairs and shirt through the scoop. The braking was stupid strong without aero, I don't know it felt so wrong to be in that "thing", but so glad this exist.

I have been hoping since you started getting some rarer cars you would get one of these eventually. This is my next "dream car" unless somebody can convince me out of it. But they are so rare I have never even gotten to see one in person. They just seem so insane and they aren't THAT out of reach price wise.

They used to have a 3.5 L V8 that made 500hp. Only added 55lb to the weight of the car. That thing was insanity. Not that over 500 hp/ton in this is anything to scoff at. You definitely seemed to enjoy that little monster.

It's got a similar p/w ratio to gt1 race cars, which usually were around 600hp 1100kg or 2420lbs

I'm just starting to get to grips with mine and it's crazy how different the experience is in different settings. I've been a passenger with a pro on a race circuit and it's savage compared to other supercars. Last week I took it on a drift track with the same pro to practice some car control. Great fun and learnt a lot in under an hour but when he drove it around the drift track it was awesome and terrifying as a drift machine in equal measure. Then drove home at under the speed limit on the motorway and it's very very intimidating due to how exposed you feel. Then finally I took it for a blast on some local country roads on a sunny evening last night with no helmet and no windscreen and it was just fabulous without going over the speed limit (lots of pot holes and still very cautious). Now counting the hours before I can go out again. I can't imagine a better sports/super car.

If I ever want a high-fear, vomit-inducing stress situation; I'd go for this. Surprisingly well-mannered among the usual, for a vehicle designed to be a track weapon and a bare-boned brute. This starts living where I shift up :D Those whistles .. Also those accelerations

Not joking with the power to weight ratio thing. Did a calculation this is the equivalent of 777 horsepower in a 3000 pound car. And 3000 is considered light for most cars.

I owned a Honda CRX for a while, and it showed me how much fun a light car can be (2200 pounds). This thing is almost half a ton lighter and triple the horsepower!

So something cool just happened. Rewatched this vid yesterday just because I was lusting over an Atom 4. I’m a truck driver btw and when I watched it, I stopped in Virginia on my way to Massachusetts. Mind you I’m from Atlanta and I’ve NEVER been to MA before lol. My route up here took me around 495 from 90 east all the way to 93 S. When I tell you I instantly knew where I was at. Like the ramp onto 93 looked so familiar and I knew it was that chicane corner from this video. And I didn’t even know the video was filmed here. My jaw DROPPED from the coincidence 😅

Because I know that you don’t understand their appeal (as mentioned in the Mercedes “limo” video) and I know that I also don’t understand them, so maybe you and some other people can get to know the Slingshot a little better! Plus you and Topher are one of the best car reviewers here on RU-vid so it’s best if one of you two were to review one, rather than somebody else!!

I always find it funny when car guys experience even remotely decent Power to weight ratios, motorbikes give you that even from rather underwhelming bikes, then again combined with the usual lack of wind protection it really desensitises your feeling of speed, it's a bit of a shame because nothing under 700hp/tonne will ever feel crazy fast to you anymore... That does look like a weapon on track though, but not sure it's "90 grand" good.

It's crazy how little wind noise you got at highway speed. Audio quality was great! Arial had the right idea putting a windscreen on this. Still crack up watching Clarkson's face melt when he drove the older one years ago.

Yeah, after that first, first gear pull and hearing the sound of that Type R motor, I now know I need to drive or own one of these.

If I were not so damn old, and arthritic and if I didn't have kids not being long out of college - needing a step up on the housing ladder, I can put my hand on my heart and say I would buy one of these Atoms. They are motorcycle fun, without the necessity for an organ donor card. I drove one of the original Atoms on the Isle of Man (no speed limit) about 15 or 16 years ago. It was a high specification version, with a plated LSD, 300hp (from memory) and every accessory availabl. At the time, i had a Ford Sierra Cosworth, ( about 280 hp) and could out accelerate a genuine 1966 289 AC Cobra. This Atom was on a totally different performance level. Things were happening faster than they could be processed by my feeble brain. I got out of that car tingling from head to toe. I've ridden Norton motorbikes in the 60s and they were fun but this Atom could be described as swapping from weed to coke. Whatever it costs to rent one, DO IT! Even if it's $2 grand, it'll be the best 2 grand you've ever spent. No "Lady of the night" could provide such excitement.

despite being fast and exposing you to the elements its still safer than a motorbike.

Rippin' down Lowell St. in Carlisle, MA! Caught a glimpse of an earlier gen Ariel Atom on Worcester St. in Springfield. Rippin' as well and video of it going by my Acura TL. I've only seen one, so I uploaded it. Insane when you're right next to it!

As a Brit I can proudly say that we without a shadow of a doubt make some of the best cars in the world. And the Atom is one of the most insane. Didn't realise it would be road legal in the USA. Excellent road test. Scenery not too shabby either. Where in America is that?
