Driving the Dalton Highway to the Arctic! Fun in the Midnight Sun & Fairbanks AK | Go North Ep 11
www.mortonsont...
This episode takes us further north yet again, above the arctic circle. Before getting there however we stopped in Fairbanks to join the festivities on the summer solstice. We raced in the Midnight Sun Run 10k foot race that winds its way through Fairbanks and is a party as much as it is a race! With the sun up so late we were staying up very late and left Fairbanks for our next adventure at 10:00 at night to start driving up the Dalton highway. We were planning to drive this highway mainly just to do it as it is the only access by road to the arctic in Alaska. We found rough, and sometimes muddy road conditions, but beautiful scenery in the Brooks mountain range, the last mountains before the Arctic ocean. This road follows the Alaska pipeline that pumps crude oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez and we took the opportunity to learn all we could about this pipe. We did not drive all the way to the ocean but turned around after the brooks range to head back down through Alaska and into Canada. Before getting to Canada however we used our first Boondockers Welcome in Alaska!
Boondockers Welcome: www.boondocker...
Edit: The pipeline is 48" in diameter, we accidentally said 24"

After almost a year of COVID, watching the Midnight Sun Run and all the shared drinks and high-fives and happy people literally brought me to tears. I miss big events like that; I hope I get to see something like that in person again.

In 46 states it would probably be 24” or less but in Alaska it’s 48” and in Texas it’s 36” lol Everything is bigger in Alaska lol When there years ago I was amazed at how many sparrows there were until one “stung” me and I discovered that they were actually mosquitoes lol Cheers mate and happy trails

I loved this video! I visited Alaska in 1992. In those days private vehicles were not allowed on the Dalton Highway. We went to Prudhoe Bay with a tour group on a special bus. The tires on the bus were rugged and huge. But despite that, we had a flat. The lug nuts were so tight that even with a large breaker bar, the driver could not loosen them. Fortunately, a trucker stopped and had an impact wrench strong enough to do the job We stayed overnight in Coldfoot eventually making it to Deadhorse on the North Slope at Prudhoe Bay. We did get to experience the Arctic Ocean with an escort. Some hearty souls ventured into the icy waters. Not me! We spent the night in spartan accommodations to say the least. The next day we flew a commercial jet back to Anchorage. The airport was large to handle transporting the large oil equipment. One nice part about the flight was the pilot did a 360 around Denali (formerly known as Mt. McKinley) which is the highest peak in North America. It was spectacular! My trip to Alaska was very memorable! We saw Grizzly bears, moose, bald eagles, even musk ox. What impressed me most about Alaska was the vastness of the state. The immense landscape was unlike anything I had experienced before. I'll also add I hit every salmon bake I could find. lol

Another awesome episode Tom and Cait! Love every single one. Great to see you having so much fun, and your videos just get better and better! Love all the learning that comes through your episodes as well as the visually stunning beauty of Alaska! Thank you so much for all of your hard work in putting these together - we know what a MONUMENTAL task it is to do all that driving, travel, and try and have fun through the experiences, then capture it all on video/drone/photo (taking 3x as long) and THEN coming back to the camper to write a script to narrate, download and collate all the footage, edit and deliver this!? Truly exceptional. That is dedication. Sending love to you all...we miss you and look forward to seeing you again in person.. but in the meantime, KEEP ON HAVING FUN! Love Ya! Julie & Marc xoxo

Enjoying another installment of your journey. I hesitate to be critical, but I saw you running a red light. You should never do that. Those red lights tire quickly, and should be walked at a leisurely pace, never run a red light. With the Midnight sun, I reflect on the Al Pacino, Hillary Swank, and Robin Williams film, "Insomnia." It generates a considerable apprehension for living in the never-dark.

We started in July and drove from FL to Deadhorse Alaska, up through Montana, WY, then back into the states via Washington. We must have been just a few days behind you. I think you should have continued to Deadhorse. We pulled a 15' teardrop, that we left in Fairbanks, and just drove our jeep; spent the night in Coldfoot both directions and enjoyed the nightly talks at the Ranger Station. Coldfoot itself has some unique history, though it was expensive. The restaurant is quite nice and the assortment of patches/stickers from world travelers is amazing. We met a RU-vidR (photography) whom I follow and we enjoyed a nice chat. We continued to Deadhorse and stayed in a very nice hotel and our room included three buffet meals. Couldn't complain. As to your comment there was no where to camp, several people on our Arctic Plunge tour were driving rigs like yours and had no difficulty finding parking/camping slots. On your way out, you should have stopped at the Yukon River Crossing - the first place to get gas on the Dalton. Quite a story in itself - a bear broke in one season and spent all winter in the restaurant; using the clothing etc., for sale as bedding. Unfortunately, she attacked the staff when the season began and had to be put down. As for gas, you are correct, Yukon River Crossing, Coldfoot and then at Deadhorse.

This was a Fun video especially the Midnight Sun Fun Run. IMO a truck Camper like yours is the best RV for the Arctic drives. We took our Class C up the Dempster to the Arctic Circle and had enough. So we did not continue to Tuk and turned around. Guessing we were there about the same dates as you. We’ll see....

June 2017 I checked off a bucket list item; to attend the Midnight Sun ballgame in Fairbanks at Growden Field. Prior to the game drove the Dalton Hwy for the first time to Coldfoot. After the game headed to Canada and drove Dempster to the Yukon/NWT border. Two years later returned to complete both hwys to their ends. Dipped in the Arctic in both countries.

I've watched several of your production videos, which are of high quality and have gotten some information that I haven't seen before. I do feel that the both of you sold yourselves short by not going all the way up to Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay and taking the tour would have giving you much more insight about the future of the Haul road which isn't as much in question as you guys brought up. Looking towards more of your videos. My wife and I have been through Canada and Alaska in 2015 and 2018, we're going for a third trip in 2021.
