Driving the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, Austria

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is the highest mountain pass of Austria, 2571 meters at the highest point (at the Edelweißspitze). The road is in great condition and features amazing views! In this video I drive from the north to south, driving past the Edelweißspitze, and stopping halfway at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe for the views and some electricity. The road was constructed between 1930 and 1935.
At 27 euros (electric car; 37 euros for petrol car), it's the most expensive toll road I've driven in Austria, but well worth the money!

I did this back in 1972. Went down from the top by the funicular and walked across the glacier dodging the crevices. Such a hot August day but 🥶on the crystal blue ice. Lovely to see the full journey via such a quality camera. I filmed with a standard 8 movie.😀Many thanks for the beautiful memory.

Only if you're driving a convertible or something with LOTS of visibility. Big sunroof etc. The best way to enjoy all this is to....not drive a car. Ride a bike or even a bicycle, or simply be a passenger. Ignore the road and look at everything else.

We went up this and back down on a coach trip back in 84 week in Austria, was not so much traffic then but remember the road was so good for a mountain pass, walked onto the huge Glacier near the top well worth the trip, there was a lot of hairpin bends.

That was a real Delight to watch, an hour of the most beautiful scenery I have seen... I have driven through Austria many times, usually in a truck so limited to the Auto Bahn`s..... I could still see the mountains and wish that one day I could drive them..... It will never be.... but you have taken me there so thank you :-))))

My stepson and I drove that road in 2015 on a day that they were having the Großglockner Grand Prix. It was misting lightly at the bottom and as we were going up there was some light snow. We then broke though the clouds into a glorious day to the glacier. It was great to have the opportunity to drive it but also to see the classic cars doing time trials. We were able to go down the back side on the way down.

I travelled there in 1974 and the only time I ever saw a real glacier. Thanks for the lovely trip down memory lane and it is good to see so many cyclists and motorcyclists as well. This is an epic drive.

I love driving through the Alps with you! I like the sound of your car as you decelerate in the corners. I like where you have the camera placed, the way you plan your routes. My brother and I road biked this back in 2015 but we couldn't see all of the amazing scenery because of the cloudy weather. We got poured on coming up the back side back to the top and then they announced they were shutting the pass down due to incoming snow. Soaking wet, we did one of the coldest descents I've ever experienced down to the car near Fusch. We would have killed for some perfect weather like in this video. Gotta go back some day when it's nice like this. Absolutely beautiful area.

Thank you for these beautiful views. Perfect weather on that day. Except for the massive increase in traffic, it seems not much has changed in 3 decades... I hope I'll get the chance to go back someday, hopefully on a bike. Probably not up towards Edelweißspitze though. What kind of madmen build (and maintain) a cobbled road up there, so far away from everything? That must be a nightmare to keep in good condition.
