Prior video that discusses the history of Jaguar:
• *SOLD* This 2001 Jagua...
Review of a 1971 Jaguar E-Type:
• Driving the Most Beaut...
There is something about a classic Jaguar, other than it propensity for breaking down, catching on fire, or driving the owners insane with electrical gremlins. When the whole car comes together, and everything works well, there is a joy and elation unlike any other kind of car. Jaguars, more than any other, convey something on their owners and drivers that few other cars can match. There is a richness and elegance to the car, combined with an agility and sporting feel that seems the very definition of motoring in the classic sense.
This Series II XJ6 was the last Jaguar made to feel this way. The cars that came after it were not bad, and in fact many were more reliable, but none possessed the direct lineage back to William Lyons, the founder of the company, and the cars he buried his heart and soul in to.
In-depth review and test drive of a 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Series III. Vehicle is for sale at Autohaus of Naples, on the web at www.AutohausNaples.com, or at (239) 263-8500.

I remember going into a Jag showroom with my father in the late 80's and seeing this car. It was a magnificent work of art. I remember sitting inside surrounded by the luxurious leather -- the smell -- the ambiance -- the sumptuous walnut dash. Yes, you definitely had big repair bills, but the ride was unparalleled. Like a little Rolls. It was a dream. Thanks for doing this one!

When the Royal Yacht Britannia was last in Toronto, I took my young children out of school and drove them to the pier to see it in my mother's 1987 XJ12 Vanden Plas. The police just waved us in past the barrier and even took pictures of us with the car beside the gangway stairs. That car was a head-turner and just like Bill said, it was as smooth to drive as it was elegant to look at. Good review Bill and thanks for bringing back so many good memories of that car.

I bought and then sold mine for $1600 about ten years ago. One rear door didn't open and the other side's window didn't work, but everything else functioned and my only repair in a year of owning it was replacing a coolant hose that failed. It had class and power, and was a far better driving car than I ever could have expected. Loved my Jaaaaag.

Sorry Bill, slight correction if you'll permit a Briton to chip in. Regarding the V12s: HE stood for 'High Efficiency' which meant 15 mpg rather than 12. As if the people that bought the V12s gave a crap. Also, the Jag gave you something the German marques simply didn't have - style and class. Pininfarina's restyle for the S3 made, IMHO, one of the most beautiful saloon/sedan cars ever made. Mike in Newcastle upon Tyne where it's a bit humid (this being an island) but not too warm. I do wish the birds would stop crapping on my car as soon as I've washed it though.

I owned a 1985 4.2 sovereign -To close the hood correctly, you should stand infront of the car & place one hand in the centre, up near the top, and give it a firm, but gentle shove from a half-way closed position - not too hard. Any other method can cause damage to it.

My e-type had a strange inverted bump, close to the front of the hood. I discovered later that it was quite common, and the result of mechanics leaving tools on top of the radiator, which was very close to the underside! Imagine the pressure when that long and heavy front hinged hood was closed!

The Vanden Plas was basically the US version of the Daimler sold in Europe. The same car, just a bit more luxurious with burl walnut etc. My favourite difference is that the instruments are slightly more recessed. I love your passion for Jaguars. I have owned many my latest being an X308 long wheelbase V8 Sovereign. The Queen also owned one and was chauffeured in it and also drove it and this same model was also the car of several UK Prime Ministers. It is such an elegant but powerful car and still turns head even though it is now 22 years old! Here's a bit of anecdotal history. My father designed the new storage for the V12 Jag engine at Sandy Lane plant in Radford, Coventry when production was increased and my step father held (and probably still holds, if he was alive) the average speed record around the Nardo track in S Italy for a standard 4.2 Jaguar when he was chief test driver for them! I remember when he brought the Big Cat Jag race car home once and sitting on an orange box as passenger as he took me for a drive in it. Those were the days. This was back in the 1980's.

I WILL have one again.... some day. But besides all the backseat fun I had in mine, there's a few things that will stick with me forever. One of the coolest things about these cars is looking out over the hood as you're cruising. One of my friends said to me one day on the way to school that when he puts his head close up to the dash that "this must be what it looks like driving and looking out the windshield of the Batmobile." Yeah. He was 100% spot on!

1988 bought a used XJ 6 III, 4.2 1980 model in Switzerland, it was a French import and had a 5 gear stick shift on a Rover transmission, very rare. White with blue leather interior, shifting tanks functioned with no problems, I loved to drive it on alpine passes, like Susten, St. Gotthard, Lukmanier and San Bernardino etc. Sold it after 5 years. Like the memories of these years back then. Thanks Bill for your work and lots of side stories. I enjoy your channel.

Those dealer added shopping cart door ding strips just ruin the lines of this car, but it's Christmas everyday on the instrument panel!

An absolutely gorgeous car despite being notorious for many problems. Love them regardless! Fun video Bill.

I remember seeing these cars in London when I was around 8/9 years old in the late 80's. I used to get a literal high from seeing the size of the engine on the back. They literally blew my mind those cars back then. Being from Ireland Jags just weren't a thing here back then. MAybe a few in Dublin, but that would have been about it.

I drove one of these back in the early '90s, a wonderful car, such a smooth ride. I recently located a very nice example and was interested in buying it, the price was around $24,000. Then I started watching your videos on the XJ8 VDP cars, long story short a 2006 XJ8 VDP is being delivered to me tomorrow. Black cherry over black, 80,000 miles, converted to coil-overs, $14,000. I still like the XJ6 but also like the technology of the newer cars. Time will tell if I made the right choice.

My first Jaguar experience in 1954 was driving my uncle's 1938 3.5 SS100 before it became an unaffordable dream! I have owned a 3.8 S type, (not a 420), and an Xj6, both purchased used at around three years old. Both wonderful cars when they were running well. Alas, the running well bit could be intermittent.. They were reliable mechanically but what a crummy electrical system,!

Nice, Bill! I had a 1970 Series 1 XJ6 short wheel base back in the mid 90s - loved that car! :)

A well done video of the XJ 6. Not many are aware that the XJ 6 has 6 absorbers, not the usual 4 in most cars. 2 at the front and 4 at the rear. Hence, the excellent ride and body control. I bought one and only later learnt of this.

It has elegance and grace you don’t see in cars anymore. That rear suspension set up was a work of genius. Pretty sure the in board disc brakes dated way back to the Mk2 S-TYPE from the 60’s.

My neighbor used to own and work on new Jags, and drove them occasionally. He now restores 70-100+yo motorcycles that in his own words broken old machines are far less temperamental than a working Jag.

Great video as always Bill!!! You are 100% right, Tawny Kitaen was the biggest reason that XJ in the 80s is stuck in our minds. RIP Tawny.

Truly incredible driving experience. Bill's descriptions are super accurate. The appearance - nothing close to it, a real beauty inside and out. A true treasure of the automobil industry, one of a kind. Proper maintenance is the key for it's longetivity and enjoyment driving it - it's worth it

There is only one thing better than driving a Jag and feeling the "magic carpet ride." And that is handing the keys back to the owner. The bunny at the start of the vid is symbolic. You have to be one to own a British car.
