I was a teen in the US when these made their way to all the car magazines. Decades later my mind still hasn't fully wrapped itself around the concept.

On an episode of the American tv news show “60 Minutes” Tina Turner was one the subjects, and she owned a red LM002. She insisted on taking the reporter for a fast ride in the South Of France around winding roads, it was absolutely hysterical, and she was one fierce driver!

I loved Lamborghinis back in the 70-80s. Absolutely mad styling and functional which has been sadly muted in recent times… The LM002 is a pretty awesome beast

Hi Giacomo! :) I don't know where the fuel tank capacity information to the Wikipedia came from, but the LM002 in its standard form has a 290 litres fuel tank and as the official consumption in catalogues was rated 20-40 l/100 km, there was an optional desert tank-kit which extended the capacity to 540 litres. So you had better chances to reach the next location with re-fuel opttion. Eventually the Army of Morrocco has bought 60 of them for its generals and chief officers and some of them were equipped with heavy duty machine guns at the back.

Jack you always surprise us with the most unexpected and unique cars.. Your channel gets better and better . I know about YT statistics and the average popular video time but i feel like extra time could be an option for your videos concerning the importance of the cars you present. Or even a part two on some of them exploring unique mechanical aspects or features with a touch of storytelling. That would help the channel grow beyond it´s current size. Cheers.

The LM002 is one of those cars everyone would love to have a go in, purely to say to their friends that they had. It's just a mad thing and we should have more cars like this.

I looked at a used one in Seattle WA. USA - they came with "Sand Tires" which you are not showing. There was a ridge built in to the sidewall to keep the sand from going into the wheel well. They were $1000 USD per tire he told me in 2002.

Such an absurd vehicle. Truly an original concept, different from anything else. Very much a "true" Lamborghini, although completely atypical. Can't even mention it in the same sentence as the Urus- a mass market poser car based on a VW. Anyway, different times I suppose. But it's great to see a fresh review on this monster - keep the vintage exotica vids coming!

They really were a unicorn car ,,, Looks a lot like an H1 Hummer though , but years ahead of its time. Wow ,, very interesting video , well done , and what a rare chance to drive , there cant be many of those left on the roads .

The LWB Land Rover 127 with the ubiquitous Rover V8 that I used to drive in the early '90's made more noise from the transmission and mainly the tyres than it did from the exhaust, it was almost electric in it's lack of exhaust noise.

Always liked the LM002! One of these was featured in one of the later season episodes of Miami Vice. I believe it was the two-part "Mirror Image", but may be mistaken on the title. Great video! Been quite impressed with the vehicles you have been able to showcase for us! 👍

Fast Lane got quite an early run at the LM002 I think, and took it to the Land Rover test track where it did great. I remember them having fun as the only thing on the road which Range Rover drivers found intimidating, uttering comments like it makes them look like Sinclair C5's.

I remember sitting in a black one at Christopher Jackson's near Knutsford back in the mid 1990s, he was an independent prestige/sports car dealer, I think it was his own toy, remember being blown away by the size of it but also amused that it had the same tail lights as my Alfa 33!

What an absolute gem ! I think the styling is beautifully brutal for an 80s car if you look at the cybertruck this one is more modern . Didnt know about theese now its another dreamcar. Thank you so verry much for showing this to us , Keep it up .

The most important point of this car is that Hummer H1 project were largely copied from Lamborghini LM002 at the time. The origin of the Lambo project started to satisfy some Arabian Frontier patrol specifications. The project envolves some important developments on tyre - Pirelli develop a tyre only for this car that car run flat at 200km/h in the desert. Was the first run flat commercial tyre. Brakes also were developed with new technologies to stop this giant at top speed. In fact, was a development project that was top notch at the time in many aspects. The presenter seems to ridicularize Lamborghini but, clearly, is very poorly informed on the project story, goals and results. LM002 is still today a very desirable car and the quotations are very high.

Everyone who drives them reports that old Lamborghinis have an absolutely shin-snapping clutch, and in this one you say that the clutch engages pretty high up. I used to have a 5-speed swapped Mercury Grand Marquis and the clutch was very much like you described - a strenuous exertion to push on, but with a mercifully high bite point. It was fun to drive and pretty much the coolest car on the road, but add that clutch to the really uncooperative gear lever (I thought the transmission was jammed at first!), it was just something I wasn't always in the mood for, so I sold it. Good times...

This car is often called a Suv,but is a pure and rude off road. The Rambo Lambo was the most extravagant and strange object that you could find on the road. A car with many faults,awful turning circle,heavy clutch,tragic fuel consumption,big outside and with poor room inside and,after all ugly,but absolutely unique and distinctive.So unique and distinctive that an ugly styling became beautiful,futuristic and ahead years if you think that the Hummers became cool with a similar styling twenty years later. And if used offroad this thing was capable to go everywhere. This is what a Lamborghini should be: excessive,extravagant,exceptional. The only ugly car which is beautiful. The only car full of faults that is perfect. And,I think,one of the few cars that every petrolhead dreams to drive once in the lifetime. So you are a lucky guy.Thank you for another great video.

TBH, I loved that hellish monster (the 002) back then, and still love it today. Let's not forget that 7.7 sec to 100 and a top speed of 205 km/h were insane for such a massive off-road vehicle back then, no competitor came near. When joking with friends I always said, imagine you're driving at 160 on the Autobahn and get light signs from a truck behind inviting you to step aside. Another great review of a very unusual vehicle Jack. I think the separate left and right engine bank lights reflects that the Lambo V12 is managed electronically as two conjoined six cylinder engines. That was just from something I got from an Iain Tyrrell video.

While they didn't let us have M1's on the road here in the US, a very well connected BMW Dealer in Hermosa Beach, CA near where I worked, had one in his dealership in the mid 80's! I was in love! When I was about 12 or 13 I used to play a PC game called "4D sports driving" (who remembers that!) and one of the cars you could choose to drive was the LM002. I'd never heard of or seen one before that and so far have never seen one in person. Very cool though :)

Ah, the good old Rambo Lambo. There was a white and a red one of these in my area here in the US when I was younger. They were really something else compared to what was on the road at the time.

I think you might have it right about the tractor theory Jack it would make some sense. This car might look at first glance like a 'dogs breakfast' but by today's standards it is not that bad. It is more like something an army might roll up in but the whole design does make you smile. You might not want to do too much off-road activity with the price of the tyres and the fuel consumption but 'in for a penny in for a pound' would have to be the mantra! Thanks Jack for another great review and do try to get a drive in a Range Rover of the same era if you can. 👍👍

You could even say that the LM002 was plagiarised to create the Hummer! Knowing the top-spec Mercedes G-Wagons were also aimed somewhat towards the same market, maybe you should drive one of those for comparison (along with driving a Hummer)?

The fuel tanks were inboard at the back and you had to climb up to fill the tanks...at that time in the UK the fuel pump automatically stopped at £80...so you had to go into the kiosk and pay before commencing to fill up....Portman in London was the first to import the LM002 into the UK and that was featured in a car mag under the title Rambo Lambo...and they pitched it against the Overfinch Range Rover...they took them up to Scotland on a train transporter and it only just fit.

It's interesting to look at this and see the direction where large SUVs went, not just Range Rover but the Merc GL, Audi Q7, and even the civilian Hummer. I know mad-engined SUVs continued to be sold but the mainstay was the 3-litre diesel V6s in Europe. I've driven a GL63 and it's a complete hoot, and I've thought long and hard about buying one, but I've (so far) stuck with my 3-litre diesel simply because 10mpg is just too much to get my head around. I remember reading about the LM002 when it first came out and never could understand what it was for back then however it makes more sense these days in terms of its size, even if its choice of engine still seems crazy. That said, I always understood the Lambo V12 to be a tough reliable engine so maybe not such a crazy idea.

Probably more power than low torque beacause of the 4-valve engine. In those days there were no Vanos etc at Lambo nor Ferrari, revvy engines! Pretty cool car the 002!

5:25 The braking scenario is the same on my Land Rover Defender from 1991. I might say that drums are cheaper and easier to install but that can be hardly the case here. Dynamically, discs are better able to cope with braking as the weight of a heavy vehicle is transferred to the front. This Lamborghini is definitely a large mass which undoubtedly lurches onto those discs which will need to handle a larger portion of the braking force. I guess this is one answer. I am sure some oracle will put me right. Power to you!
