Driving the world's best road in a Porsche 911 Targa GTS

As some of you may know, last year I decided to embark on a crazy road trip, driving from my home in Bournemouth on the south coast of England, all the way up to the Arctic Circle. The adventure involved 5,000 miles, taking in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. My car for this adventure of a lifetime? A Porsche 911 991.2 GTS Targa.
This video forms part of that trip, with previously unseen footage from my blast up the famous Trollstigen mountain pass. This gem of a route from Molde to Geiranger is a relatively unknown entity, but I believe it to be one of the best driver's roads in the world - here's why!

Great video. Also check out Stelvio Pass in northern Italy. Its a very famous one, so full bikers, cyclists and what not. But in the winter maybe...cheers!

Thanks! Stelvio is fine, providing you don't need to share the road with much slower moving traffic (which is rare). At the right time though, it's ace.

@@9WERKSTV I look forward to it. I wish i lived closer to roads like these! We have some nice ones in the north east of USA but nothing like those roads. Keep up the good work and never stop exploring.

Great to hear you used to be a local boy! And as it happens the Elan valley is one of my favourite roads in Wales, nice fast section by the reservoir then tighter sections to the lead mine. Lovely.

Without doubt the roads around Victoria in Australia are infinitely better driving roads. They have a centre line so you don’t need to worry about head on crashes, there are constant corners with barely any straights for sometimes 100km’s. Because there are few opportunities to go really fast speeding is less of an issue and you can drive for an hour and not see another car!

I’ll give my two cents here. You described a good road well. People often refer Stelvio as the best. And certainly it has beautiful scenery just like Trollstiegen. However, driving-wise straights followed by a slow hairpin are nothing but boring after the third hairpin. Another thing about Norway is that their police is even crazier than here Finland. The speed limits are ridiculously low in Norway and speeding tickets extremely expensive. It’s almost a religious thing - they hate cars and driving. The best road I have driven is a local country road here in Finland (Im not going to reveal it publicly cause I dont want cops to get there.). Many people have said Black forest (Schwarzwald) road is marvellous. Col de Turini seems to have other bits than just hairpins too, Route Napoleon seems great. I’ve done the Pacific Highway One along the Californian coast and it has great bits but also way too much traffic. LA canyons are probably great with huge variety of corners. All and all it is hard to beat Nurburgring as driving challenge. It’s got a fantastic spectrum of corners and elevations. Done it three laps. The original Charade circuit (Clermont-Ferrand) would be wonderful. Ive also done the Targa Florio bit from Cerda to south and that would be woinderful but for the land slides. Im sure there are thousands of great local roads in the world but only few get the reputation of Stelvio or Transfagaranza or what ever it is. A good road has a vast spectrum of corners, beautiful scenery, elevations, sun - and you also need good company and life is good.

Really appreciate your sentiments! The 'Ring is fun, but on a tourist day it can be very, very intense - I personally wouldn't want that level of intensity every time. Part of the appeal of a good driving road is having the place to yourself (much like your local road that you won't reveal, completely understandable) whereas at the 'Ring you just don't get that! Agree with your suggestions for other great driving roads, they are all tops. Angeles Crest Highway was a fun road too, particularly if you're in an older car where it's all about sewing the corners together and keeping momentum. Thanks again for your input, really appreciated.

Apexjuha come to America my friend...no traffic, no cops, and endless medium to high speed corners. #1 for me is the Cherohala Sjyway in NC/TN. The Ozark mountains in Arkansas are also a deserted playground. All you have to do here is find mountains in unpopulated areas.

Ripper experience & video. Couldn't help but wonder if a manual transmission and NA engine would have heightened the emotion of the experience.
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV 5 лет назад
I'd agree with that, if I were driving that road only. As it happens a turbocharged GTS Targa with PDK was pretty much the best modern Porsche for undertaking a 5,000-mile trip through some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. It really was a brilliant tool for the job.

Great car, great trip! I absolutely hate the sport exhaust system, though. Sounds like a coffee machine. And it is very annoying for bystanders, too. I would only buy a Targa 4GTS if Porsche Manufaktur is able to deliver it with a normal 4-piped exhaust.

Nah sorry. Not saying u don’t know what u talking about but surely futa/raticosa best driver’s road (no time to look at mere scenery). Ok not driven trollstigen but it’s not very long is it ?? 😀
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV 5 лет назад
I suppose that's the beauty of it: different people will have different takes on what they see as the best driver's road. Nobody is right or wrong, it's subjective. As for Trollstigen, the full-length road all the way to Geiranger takes about an hour and is bloody stunning! Unfortunately I had a late-night ferry to catch back to my hotel so couldn't get the entire route but it is absolutely worth visiting, that's for sure.
@peterkirton4580

I was lucky enough to drive that road in 2014 with a group of friends and like you I drove all the way from home. We got a lot of attention as you rarely see performance cars in Norway due to the very low speed limits - 50 mph - on all single track roads. I agree with you that the Atlantic road is disappointing except in bad weather when it is spectacular
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV 5 лет назад
Great to hear! I am amazed the Atlantic Ocean Road gets more publicity when Trollstigen - and many other roads in the country - are superior.

I have 2 comments: 1) why get an epic sports car with an auto box?! 🥴🤢🤮 are you serious my guy?! 🤦🏻‍♂️ and 2) i believe that driving a right hand car on a right hand road (or vice versa) is a recipe for disaster; you’re just asking for an accident! 🤷🏻‍♂️
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV 5 лет назад
1) it's a press car, I didn't spec it but found PDK most suitable for a 5,000-mile trip. 2) Lol
