Thanks for the video. It inspired me to get my Part 107 certification. I passed the test about a week ago and got my temporary license today. I have never had any intent of making money from my drone. I mostly just fly it for fun. The main reason that I went through the process was to become a safe drone pilot. I just don't want any trouble from anybody. Also, the knowledge is very valuable. Whether you fly for profit or fun you need to know how to read a FAA Sectional Map and stay out of restricted air space. Something that I had never thought of is we live close to a major regional hospital that has a heliport on the roof. Because of our proximity to the hospital I can only fly my drone to 200 feet AGL instead of the normal 400 feet.
I took my test last month, and I got a 97%. I also did a course through Drone Pro Academy, and I watched a lot of RU-vid videos. It was an easy process, but the test will try to trip you up a lot of times. I took two soild weeks to study, and it went very well. What I'll say to you both is that if Chris is licensed, Sara doesn't really need to get it. She can still fly the drone as long as someone who is Part 107 licensed is supervising her flight. So that's a plus.
did a test 95%, test is easy. studied two days. 3 hours a day before sleep. Used one RU-vid video and few online free tests, consider that English is my third language i would say i every one should do it, its like a test for a driving license.
@@oleksandrmokrohuz5182 great job on that test score! But for anyone unfamiliar with the Part 107 test, it is MUCH more difficult than the driving license test. For example, Part 107 has 60 questions, 3 multiple choice answers per question and often the wrong choices are designed to be tempting answers if you just apply slightly wrong knowledge. You will never walk in and pass just applying common sense or with luck. The test is designed to defeat that. And the pool of knowledge you could be expected to draw from is not shallow. Driving a car is something almost everybody has seen since childhood. Aircraft and airspace rules are not typically experienced. But just means it's more of an accomplishment to earn!

The part 107 license is lifetime... you do not have to take the test again. You have to take recurrent training every 2 years online to keep your certificate valid and current. Congrats on passing the test. Great Job.
This video was well done and super helpful now that I am so close to purchasing and operating a drone! Sharing your experience and knowledge is a real gift. I spent nearly 20 years flying in news helicopters and started (and managed) the news helicopter program for one of our local affiliates, so I can fully appreciate why the FAA wants drone flyers to be licensed for commercial use. I was part of the local FAA safety group who developed the local flight agreement for 'low flyers', which included news, medical, police, and banner-towing helicopters. Not everyone cares to be as mindful as you.
Just wanted to add a pilot’s perspective on this topic. When drones first came out, there were a number of near misses (and a few incidents) of people flying drones near airports. Personally, in the first couple of years after drones were introduced, I had a couple of near misses with drones. Mostly kids thinking that flying a drone at an airport was the right place to fly them. The flight restriction areas and the 400’ ceilings on drone operations were introduced to minimize the possibility of an airplane being brought down by a drone. I have seen pictures of planes that incurred damage from a drone strike. Now that said, I looked over the FAA materials for the 107 certificate and found that there was a lot of materials that overlap the private pilot certificate requirements. Not sure there is a need to have that level of understanding of our airspace system. But it is there. So… if you pass the 107, you might as well finish getting your private pilots license! 😁
@@revealingfacts4all Drones aren’t being singled out. Any of the TFRs that are being issued clearly call out the same restrictions for model aircraft that drones are subject to. I think the big difference is the camera on drones. The FAA defines as any drone operator who makes money on their videos as commercial operations and requires the license.
Not to try and be controversial, but the 400 ft ceiling has been around for a long time with AMA. It’s the 100 foot separation between puddle jumpers and drone operators because PP are not supposed to go below the 500ft demarcation and of course, we are not supposed to run above the 400 AGL. I was just saying that to a friend. But with the ever expanding capability of drones I think it's good to think ahead. You're not supposed to fly above 400 feet but you certainly can. I just started with my first drone, but if I was going to be doing anything commercial I think I would want full understanding of any way I could cause harm. A 100k fine would suck, but a guilty conscience costing some poor person their life isn't something I ever want to live with.

As an aspiring content creator, I found this video to be the most straightforward and easy to understand explanation of when the FAA deems it necessary to have a Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot License. I am also an aviation enthusiast and have studied extensively towards the Private Pilot, Instrument and Commercial licenses, so the acronyms, terminology, different airspace designations and so forth are familiar to me. Your video gives a clear pathway on how to obtain the license. I live in a large metropolitan area that is all Class B airspace. Nothing happens within this airspace without clearance from ATC. The FAA’s objective is to keep everyone safe by avoiding midair collisions. A bird or drone strike can lead to catastrophic loss of life to not only those in the air, but also to those on the ground. The windscreen on small private aircraft is very thin plexiglass and such a strike can instantly incapacitate or kill a pilot. We’ve all seen the news stories showing what happens when even a small plane crashes into a house or building. Let’s all keep it safe and learn the rules of the airways. I would recommend that anyone flying a drone get their Part 107 license. You will be a safer drone pilot, stay out of legal trouble and who knows, you may just be able to make some money as a drone pilot doing work for realtors and others needing your services. I will be contacting Pilot Institute to get started on my license.

Why aren't ALL drone operators required to get a license? ....because there is NO difference between doing it as a hobby and doing it to make money, zero. Completely inconsistent. So apparently it's not about safety, but is about making money for the faa.

I understand the safety issues and Chris and Sara are wrong when they say the FAA isn't making money. I would guess by now there are thousands of drone users and you times that with what 160.00+ I herd it was over 200.00 in some states. And the number of drone pilots will just keep increasing. But, it is what it is. If you plan on making money with it, the law is, you have to pass the 107. I think it's sad though that if you don't pass, you lose your money. It's not costing the FAA anywhere that kind of cash to have a person hand you test then check it to see if you passed. If they're going to keep your money no matter what, give the person like 3 tries. Just my opinion is all.
@@chrisandsara Is the license good nationwide? In two years, I'll be traveling around the country with a drone posting the footage on RU-vid. I'll be testing in KY, my birth state, so am I going to have to come back here every two years to retest?
The certificate is issued by the FAA and is valid throughout the USA. Pilot certificates are issued without a specified expiration date- they are good until they are surrendered. To exercise the privileges of the certificate, the pilot has to take retraining every two years. This can be done online.
I truly appreciate this video. You two are awesome and very informative as far as the new FAA process. I purchased a drone 5 years ago and have played with it a few times over the years. The last 2 years I've not flown it (shut-downs, work, health issues, etc). Recently due to my retirement I've once again turned some attention to my "toys," the drone being one of them. WOW. The new rules are hard to follow. I did register my drone and am now thinking about getting my 107 license. It still leaves me with no place to comfortably fly my drone. The local forest preserve does not allow drones on or above their properties, and many other state and local laws get in the way. I've got a lot of money and time into this "toy" and hate to just sell it (at a huge loss due to it's age) I truly appreciate your video. It's clear and very honest (and not judging) which makes me feel a bit better about having a questionable "toy." It irritates me the rules are so strict, I know of a few people that have done some really stupid and dangerous things with their "toys." That is what the FAA is trying to prevent. FWIW, you make money or are compensated flying a drone, by definition, it's commercial flying. Not recreational. And who knows what prompted someone to report them, haven't watched the video and don't really care. Although I'm amused that someone running what appears to be a professional RU-vid channel was totally clueless about FAA regulations. To be in this hobby/line of work/whatever you want to call it, you'd almost have to have your head stuck in the sand to be that oblivious.
@@chris2790 Found the person who reported them. That being said, just because they fly drones from time to time in their RU-vid video doesn't mean they have every knowledgeable information about it. Flying drones aren't their main source of content on their channel. And it's not like companies like DJI go out of their way to tell people to get commercial drone pilot licenses. The whole problem with the "intent" bullshit. The fact that you have to comment that you didn't watch the video and don't even care makes you just a dick. Who goes on someone's video not watch it then go to the comments to act like ass? If you're going to at least criticize someone do it in a way that's not so condescending.
Guess 95% of those anonymously reporting are those who have the investment as they have passed the Part 107 and you are essentially competition skimping on the investment to maximize profits. They probably don't report EVERYONE as they don't know, but they also know what is prohibited. When they see footage of prohibited activity...that they can't do, legally, it tell them that the individual probably doesn't have a Part 107, or worse as the FAA finds out they do have a Part 107 and should have known better.
I just passed my Part 107 test today. As long as you study the test is fairly easy. I will say that at least 50% of the questions on the test was on material I hadn't covered in my studies. All things considered I still scored an 88%. Registering for IACRA is very easy and I made sure to have that taken care of before the test. Happy flying! James

My question: now that you've obtained the license, I assume that in every future video you upload here, you need to put in the disclaimer what your licence no. is, or how does the registration work? (The alternative would be that the FAA has a database matching your license no. and your RU-vid URL, and the next time someone who doesn't like drones reported you, the FAA would say "No, get lost, they're licensed".)
not so many civilians reporting drone flyers to the faa. most likely other youtubers and creators who hate the competition or don't like your channel. or someone who bothered to get their license and is upset you didn't bother. i'm ok with the license but the sport has to exist as a hobby so the faa doesn't have total control over drones. if 99% of the time you fly requires a license then the 1% hobby is going to die and flying drones will be a strictly commercial operation. at that point, you're going to start to see why you don't want to faa in your business at that point they start ordering extra paperwork like flight plans and maintenance records, additional fees, different levels of licensing with priority to big business, expanded geographic restrictions, higher fines, points and license suspensions, remoteID, insurance carrier requirements, and most importantly they will order you to waive your rights during your interaction with local law enforcement so the faa won't need an army to enforce all those rules. flying a drone will be like driving a freight truck across america. as soon as kids and newbies are no longer flying and only adult businessmen operate drones trying to make money.....
Make sure you put the expenses of the course, travel to and from the test, as a deduction on your income tax. Cost of a rental car, deduct it. It should be classified as a required expense.

Not sure how outgoing and open you two have been with people in your new town/city about your life (RU-vid channel, etc) but you've reaffirmed my decision to be very low key about my life and what I do..don't want to attract the wrong kind of energy. The fact that someone took the time to actually call the FAA to report you two SPECIFICALLY!!.. blows my mind. That seems more far fetched than the FAA cracking down on RU-vidrs. As a licensed private pilot (tho no longer active), I can say the FAA is similarly a stickler in limiting what flights you can and cannot do with a private pilot license (compared to a commercial pilot license). You have found the healthy way to understand what the FAA at its best is trying to do: keep the skies as safe as possible.
Frank is right, if somebody with a private pilot license gets caught operating an air taxi or some other commercial endeavor, they get in trouble, big trouble... For example, couple years ago I went down to South Jersey to take a ride on the cannibal queen, a 1940s stearman biplane. The pilot is a commercial pilot but operates the queen on a special living history flight experience exemption. I asked if he could just pick me up at the local airport near my home and he said oh no no the FAA wouldn't like that...

I guess the thing that pisses me off is someone turned you in to the FAA in the first place. You folks strike me as being pretty smart, and know not to fly drones in and around airports, and the obvious, but to be REALLY frank, and I'm hoping other people read this comment as well, there's a lot of people out there who need to mind their own GOD DAMN business and let people just live their lives and do what they do. Great video! Appreciate your attitude. If I may add a personal thought - I live in Japan, and I can fly my drone without a license, commercially or otherwise, as long as it meets certain basic requirements. There are more conditions than the US, but overall I feel more free here. It's unfortunate the U.S. is actually behind Japan in this, imo, which is why I think it is appropriate to criticize the FAA. Not to say anyone should be mean or disrespectful, but the regulations are an unnecessary burden and it needs to be fixed, especially since they are based on outdated data and tech analysis. I'm totally on board for requiring a license, I just don't think it should more complicated (or expensive) than getting one to drive a car, which is 1000x more dangerous. I think it will get easier in the future, but who knows when. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience, and best of luck on your adventures.
@@chrisandsara Honestly it's amazing to me that Japan is so reasonable with drones. Many things are a bureaucratic nightmare here. On the flip side, getting my Japanese driver's license was quite challenging!
Anytime someone thinks they can judge your intent, they are on extremely shaky ground. So shaky in fact that I would call their bluff and fight them in court if they pursued their course. It is difficult to prove the intent of a person’s actions when they have no proof of intent. Intent is an unseen thing.
In any other country, a fine of $140,000 on an individual citizen for this type of thing would be tossed out of court. Then again, we're the only country in the world where people can go bankrupt if they get sick.

Excellent info! Thanks so much for this, I just bought a DJI Mavic 2 but now had to cancel the order. 🤦🏻♂️. I just wanted it for short clips around our house when working and filming for our videos. But if I have to go through all that, it's not worth it, I wish they could make it more reasonable, but I guess they have to have these rules since others have messed it up for the rest of us previously. Too bad really. But you guys probably saved us a scary call or fines from the FAA. We have to play by the rules... but it's sad when little guys like us can't even get a drone for cool footage while we work on our own property. Maybe someday...
I mean, you can still 100% get a drone and have tons of cool footage, just don't post it/monetize it. Remember when we all had photo albums for fun and memories and not clout and ad revenue? Yeah, same idea.

I'm part107 certified going on three years now. I appreciate your video and encouragement on how quickly you can get a license! Regretfully there is so much more to this discussion that you are "flying over!"It's like watching a movie with implausible plot holes! What you neglect to mention is the word SAFETY! The part107 test doesn't teach you how to fly a drone. It teaches you how to operate SAFELY.... You don't take the test and forget about it.... you must be all about safety before the drone launches and practice FAA guidelines at ALL TIME! Say it with me.... SAFETY-SAFETY-SAFETY-SAFETY-SAFETY-SAFETY-.... That's the real INTENT of the FAA is to keep the airspace safe no matter what any pilot's personal intent is. Fly safe!
If that was true there wouldn't be the caveat of "intent of hobby" in the first place. Because you should be flying it safely even if you're intention is having fun.
This popped up in my feed, good info. It’s crazy because my husband is a helicopter and airplane pilot but probably would still get fined for flying a drone!?! Fortunately we are international vloggers right now (and always look up regs where we are at), but when we get back to the US, Keith will definitely get the drone license. As your husband is already a licensed pilot, passing the drone test should be a breeze. BTW, you need the license only if you make money from doing so, as puts your use into the "commercial" use category. Flying a drone just for personal use and fun does not require a license.
@@chrisandsara This experience reminds me of a saying (I forget by who or the exact wording) about how accepting rules seemingly reasonable soon has people mired in rules and not being able to do much or anything without permission from the government. You should no more have to have permission to make money with a drone than someone does to make money with a hammer. And, yes, it is a money grab by the government (among other things) and it works out to nickel and diming people to death. They want $12 for this, $50 for that, another 12 cents per gallon of gasoline, etc. Now if someone does harm with a drone they should punish them severely, but has you weren't and aren't harming anyone (being sensible people) that you could even possibly face a $100,000 fine is truly outrageous.

Practically speaking, you weren't harming anyone and it really doesn't matter if the FAA has "secret agents" or just that people are informing on you to the FAA since the result is the same. You can't post ANY drone videos on RU-vid without a part 107 license. Even if you have monetization turned off. The FAA position is that as long as there is the potential for making money you must have a part 107. This applies even to hobbyist.

Knowing you are 100% legal that day. I feel like the FAA will be similar to any other government agency and constantly update their rules and regulations. I choseaw enforcement as my career, and every June since 1997 I spend 40 hours in an in-service class to stay up to date with current laws. Good luck.
I also used Pilot Institute for my drone certificate, it was the best thing to do. It's like studying to fly a manned pilot. Didn't know the fine was that much. Wow!
@@riggermortisfpv526 Sub 250 gram drones are NOT exempt under Part 107. Any drone used for commercial purposes must be registered regardless of weight--the FAA says. The exemption only applies to hobbyists. If you want airspace authorization using LAANC or Kittyhawk apps, you still have to register the drone--even as a hobbyist.
@@riggermortisfpv526 They are not exempt from the regulations, just registration. Sub 250 gram quads have to follow the same rules as everyone else or one of the rats will report you.
I keep seeing these videos people reporting creators... Unless you were clearly breaking a law, this is kind of a low thing to do to someone... Hence why I'm getting my part 107 next month, so that there are no questions, when i hit 1k and monetize my channel!
Let's move the clock ahead a month and congratulations on passing your Part 107. You have a significant investment in training, time, and knowledge of the law supporting your your RU-vid Channel. Now re-look at your own question. You see your competition, other RU-vid creators, skimping on the investment and reducing their cost by not getting the Part 107, you know they are violating Federal Law at a minimum. Perhaps you see blatant airspace violations - prohibited parks, over public gathering, etc, where even if the had the Part 107 they would know it was inexcusable. Would you report them? Suspect you wouldn't report each and every - but the air footage that you know is a blatant violation it becomes highly probable that 1) they don't have a Part 107 and don't know better and worse, 2) they do have a Part 107 and blew the prohibition off.

That's correct, unless they continue to delay it. It was supposed to be out on March 1st but then they delayed it and delayed it again. Unfortunately I'm going to pay for the recurrent test instead of doing the free training 😞

I took the online course a couple of weeks ago. Took me about 2 hours to read through material and take the test. You have to score a 100 on the test but 1) you can review notes and 2) if you miss a question you can correct your answer right there. If you aren't current there is no reason anymore to not be since it's so easy now.
I watched the full video guys. I have just ordered my DJI air2s and will be practicing and in the meanwhile, I subscribed to take the test. @@williambaldwin1757 Actually, it's the other way around - you need a license to fly, UNLESS you are flying for recreation. The government carved that exception to allow hobby flyers to NOT have to get a license. But if people are going to abuse it, watch that exception go away.
I stumbled on this and boy am I glad I did. I live in Thailand and have my licenses here but I'm coming back to America Sep-Dec and plan to do some drone flying. I thought that the "hobby" exception would work and I registered my drone for that, but now I'll got for the full Part 107. I'll be in Nashville at the start of my trip too. Thanks so much.
Great video, guys! I (chad) got my part 107 a few years ago and it's expired. I've been waffling on whether I need to renew it or not because it did seem like a grey area for the definition of "commercial" use. But, what you said on "intent" makes sense. I can't seem to find the actual verbiage in the regulations that defines what commercial operation is. Any chance you have a link?
@@andrewdoesyt7787 .....If you actively have applications out or are required to have your 107 right now for a job opportunity, then yeah go ahead and renew it. But if you just have it "just in case" then i would hold off, there are more restrictions on you as a 107 pilot by far. Some will say yeah but thats only when your getting paid not when flying for leisure, then your considered a hobbyist. Sounds good on paper and all that, but the way the FAA is overreaching lately, they are considering less and less things as "hobbyist flying". They recently busted a youtuber who was 100% non monetized, but he had enough flight footage posted that they claimed he was "building his brand" which today has a value attached to it. I only do side jobs here and there, so maybe its eaier for to say screw the faa, many of the things they're doing is unconstitutional, and the only reason their getting greedy with control now is because they have the backing of big industry, whom many are literally investing in fleets of drones for their future. Not just Amazon, you wont see home delivery for at least a decade, railroads, energy companies and agriculture will see the biggest uses of drones first, and they don't want us hobbyist or part time job pilot peons clogging up their airspace. Paramotors, from what I understand, don't even need to be licensed or the pilots have to have any certifications.
I'm a private pilot (SEL). I've experienced at least one bird strike and I've encountered plenty of birds above 400' AGL. There are a hundred 10 pound geese up there for my 1.5 pound quad. When I was younger, I did a lot of model rocketry. Said rockets might achieve 200mph up to 3000' AGL (for the one 3 stage I remember). Impact energy = 1/2 m v^2. Most of my rockets had pointy plastic nose cones that I'm betting would have gone right through the wing (and fuel tank) of any 172 or Pa-28 I flew ... while blasting flame out of the engine nozzle. Personally, I'd rather collide with my own DJI FPV than go up in a fireball. I have no issues with the FAA requiring a rating to fly commercially, over 400' AGL, or beyond visual line of sight. But to ban such operations entirely is an attempt to eliminate risk, not to manage it. Also, there have been very few drone - manned AC collisions, and never a fatal one that I can find. I believe that the whole intent definition is just too broad. And deciding what’s commercial is too subjective. People with backbone need to sue the pants off the FAA until get put out highly detail definitions. And giving $100,000 fines to everyday citizens is beyond Dept. It’s bullying. There are too many sheeple out there.
Why would anyone report you to the FAA? Your drone footage is not 'hurting' anyone as far as I can see. But most importantly, why would they report you instead of contacting you directly to say you may be flying ilegally? That's what a nice person would do. I've been playing with the DJI Mini for a while but I just bought the DJI Air 2S for an upcoming trip to the South American Andes in Peru - on my return, I am planning to get the commercial license. This is why I have delayed getting a drone, would be great to have that for my Travel show but ya, the footage would be mostly for my youtube channel. I will wait till I am ready to get the part 107. Are you really going to lie to the feds, when telling the truth doesn't cause you to get in any real trouble, and you just have to stop or get a license? @@stephenpowstinger733 That interpretation is up to you, the faa might disagree with your interpretation and that is fine, and that is when you have the right to hire an attorney or if you know an attorney , or happen to be one, to defend your interpretation . I see to many people automatically folding to said gov entities. When they go un challenged people lose more and more of their rights. I get everyone doesnt want to deal with that or cant afford to and that is fine. But I dont accept rolling over on everything like that and saying they might interrupt it different. Monotization of a RU-vid chanel, vlog, blog etc that makes anyone money is a use that clearly requires a 107. Though the FAA definition of commerical is quite broad and non specific using it making pics or videos that add to a business that provides income to anyone even a friend is clearly commerical. The biggest place of turn ins is angered by standards or people who hold a 107 and pay for insurance that see another flyer cheating the system they have to pay overhead on.
Need passengers to be a commercial and it 1200 feet and above is a commercial airline raider it may or not detect it so when signed up you been registered so if it is detected on raider and is in a commercial airline space it in there traffic zone there for may or could get into trouble most likely warnings
@@namename6866 sorry not according to FAA. Look at remotely piloted flight definitions. If upon takeoff anyone or company will benefit even the pilot recover non monetary compensation it's considered commerical use. If I take some aerial photos of my house from any altitude with any weight UAS and use them to sell the house or advertise rental it's commerical.

In Thailand all we have to do is register the drone get insurance and the license is just sending in a bunch of forms . Thats for any drone with a camera .... Only cost is the insurance and that was 45 dollars a year .

Excellent video! What I would add is that it's not the FAA that is mandating these rules, it is the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) that provides these directives. The FAA simply applies them, as do the aviation authorities in the rest of the 172 countries that comprise the UN. I live in Italy, and I have to follow the same exact rules.
There was a time before these "drones" hit the air waves where us RC pilots could go to our local field and fly without ANY FAA oversight. All we had to do was abide by a simple set of rules laid out by the AMA and be a member. Thats it, nothing more. Join a club, fly our planes, and be left alone by Big Brother. Thanks to a few idiots flying these "drones" into the airspace of airports and striking a few planes and helicopters, or flying them over people and general public, now all us RC pilots who spend days, weeks, months hand crafting our planes to fly at the local field now have to have special transponders and such and have more Fricking oversight and fees and numbers to display etc. etc. Thanks a lot. This isn't in regards to those who ARE doing it the right way, but to all the others who think they will never catch me and fly it where ever they wish.
As Always a hand full of idiots who ruin it for the rest of us. Years ago I used to fly radio control planes at a big club. Never had any FAA visits..now they seem to hide in the bushes I've been told with their ticket fine books at the ready...

It is not required to take a study course. That's up to the individual, it's their choice if they want to pay for instruction. You can get the learning information from the FAA directly, use the web, and learn on your own. As with most professional instruction, if you want information packaged in a concise and clear format, and you have an instructor to help with questions, then there is typically a fee.
that's a scary fine! I was working on my part 107 test and almost took it, however the testing center wouldn't let me take my payment, next thing you know we are full time living in our camper and I couldn't find the time to reschedule. Looking forward to following you guys :)

Once you understand the regulations you understand why it’s in place. I get it. I’m for less government but you get a grasp on the seriousness of thing and why there are rules.
In the Netherlands it’s the same. You need 75% to pass the test. I just passed, applied for my license plus the sticker one needs to have in top of the drone so it is identifiable and then ordered my drone finally (with insurance) just last night! 🙌🏾. Great information

The UK laws don’t distinguish between hobby or commercial. Based on type of flying and risk, you do A1, A2 or A3 class and then you can notch it up to GVC which includes a flight test.
