Before we get started, I wanted to send a big thank you to the team at Granite Defense for putting on the Texas Robotics summit this year.
We just came back from the event which was held this week in Burnett TX. We got to see a lot of cool equipment, fly drones, drive underwater robots, learn about new technology and solutions.
We got to visit with our industry friends and partners and even meet with some of our students on Sunday night. We will be posting more shorts in the next few days of what we saw.
Your first story this week is a story from the UK, which we don’t normally talk about, but we wanted to cover this one as the consequences could have been catastrophic.
A Drone pilot was fined for flying too close to a Hawker Hurricane.
You can see in the image playing on the screen that the drone was REALLY close to the plane…
To make matters worse, the pilot and ground crew had no idea the drone was in the area until a photographer began going through their pictures at home.
Don’t risk it, this could have resulted in people dying… Please don’t be that guy.
Your second story this week is AUVSI’s new “Green” program.
No this isn’t like a green vehicle or green energy, but an unmanned vehicle classification
If you’ve heard of the DIU’s Blue UAS program, Green is essentially the same thing but validated by AUVSI instead of the the Department of Defense.
AUVSI’s goal with the Green program is that remotely piloted vehicles including UAS are tested to determine if they are secure in terms of cybersecurity.
In addition to becoming Green, the process adds a streamlined entry into the Blue Program.
We’re hoping that this program doesn’t have the same restrictions in terms of country of origin and instead uses metrics and standards to determine what vehicles comply and which don’t.
Your third story this week is Aeroscope, which is DJI’s built in remote ID.
Basically Aeroscope is remote ID built into every DJI drone, and DJI also makes a ground station to see the locations of each DJI UAV in the area.
If you want to learn more about Aeroscope, check out this video we did with Aerial Armor.
Getting to the news now though, DJI has discontinued Aeroscope.
There currently isn’t a replacement available on DJI’s website, and we aren’t sure if this is the end of Aeroscope, or if a new product will take its place.
With remote ID around the corner, much of the information transmitted by Aeroscope is duplicated in Remote ID.
We’ll keep you updated if we see anything else about this story!
And your last story this week is the FPV Freedom Coalition and Flite Test Community Association are teaming up to petition to the FAA to raise the registration requirement for drones and R/C model aircraft from 250 grams to 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds).
The push is designed to help reduce the number of aircraft that you would need to be compliant with Remote ID, which is tight to registration requirements.
This would lessen the burden to equip unmanned aircraft, especially those that are homebuilt, with expensive and heavy tracking equipment.
We invite you to visit www.raisingthelimit.org for more information about this effort and to see how you can get involved.
