When I was a kid in Florida in the late 50s and early 60s, a lot of road work was done by chain gangs, who worked from dawn to dark. Basically they were slaves. You don’t want to know how little and how poorly they were fed and kept hydrated. Where we lived I watched these things happen. Saw men collapse with heat prostration. It was awful…never forgot it.
