Panama Canal reduces daily freighter transit limit due to lack of rain. The canal normally receives around 36 ships per day under normal operating conditions. The Panama Canal Authority said it will reduce the daily limit allowed for ships transiting the global waterway due to the continuing drought, according to a statement.

Typically at this time of year in Panama, lake levels are rising. However, this year levels are falling. In spring and summer the water level was the lowest since the beginning of the century. “This does not mean that freshwater lake levels will dry up for good, but according to meteorologists there is no significant improvement in sight for the next month. “And with the El Niño phenomenon beginning to intensify, and all existing climate models indicating that the phenomenon will continue to worsen for the remainder of this year and early 2024, this is a long-term concern.
