Here's a really fun tune from one of my favorite Chicago records, VII. Written and featuring the great Terry Kath, this one has a lot of different sections the go between a more half time feel and a really cooking groove (or double time depending on how you feel the quarter note). I love Danny's use of the crashes and ride in this tune, both in the intro where he plays around over the verses, and later on toward the ride out where he uses them as parts of his fills. I tried to match up with as many of the fills towards the end as I could but as always, I try to go for vibe over complete 100% accuracy which in my opinion can sometimes hurt a good take if I'm overly focused on playing each fill completely accurate. What amazes me is how many of the fills the rest of the band is locked in with. There are certain accents (mostly on the crashes) that Danny hits where Peter and Terry are completely in sync with him which almost makes me think that some of the ride out was arranged even though it sounds like they are just vamping as Terry solos. There's so much going on that you almost forget there are no horns on this one!

One of Terry’s best It’s so great to SEE Danny’s flourishes after years of hearing them It was around this time that Laudir joined. According to Terry, they viewed Danny as a “lead drummer” and wanted a percussionist to keep time so that Danny could be creative Thank you once again for going deep into the catalog. Even during the Terry era this band was derided and I never thought I’d see the day when I could interact with hardcore Chicago fans.

Excellent Tate! Really enjoyed watching you play on a fantastic Chicago tune. I appreciate your playing style and attention to detail when it comes to covering Danny Seraphine’s drumming! Keep up the great work!! 👍👍👍🥁🥁🥁

Great works as always Tate! I but you stumped me today … I never played this Chicago song or even listened to it enough to remember it! 🤣🤣 but I think Chicago VII is my least favorite album … I love the hits and Skinny Boy … but I totally overlooked this one! Great drumming Danny would be proud!

Thanks Earl! It's worth another listen when you have the time! Danny had a lot of action on VII. Devils Sweet being the one that many fans reference!

@@tate_berkey yea, maybe it’s time to pull out the complete album and listen. It’s funny you found a song the one album I never studied deeply! Except the 17,18,19 … etc! 🤣🤣🤣

Loved this cover! Do you think you could cover a song by Joe Walsh called Country Fair? There are 0 covers of that song and the drums on that song are AMAZING

Great cover of a fantastic tune by my favorite band. What made you decide to go bottom less on your high tom? Also, Really enjoyed your interpret of the delicate cymbal work. What size ride do you have?

Thanks! I took off the bottom head on my 10" tom because Danny Seraphine often used a 10" concert tom next to his 12" rack tom. It is a very unique sound and I wanted to get as close to it as possible! My ride is a 21" A Avedis Zildjian.

Tate, I don't get where this deep familiarity with older music is coming from. I'm 46, so a lot of the songs you cover are familiar to me. But you're from an entire generation away, and you're still in to this stuff. Are you getting it from your parents or something?

I have always been into older music since I was very young. Yes, I a way I was turned onto it by my parents and grandparents who are music lovers, but its not like it was forced on me in anyway. I took to the drums and as I continue to learn, I continue to look to those who I feel have truly mastered the instrument and where they learned which continually leads back to jazz musicians and contemporary musicians from the 60s-70s.
