Danny has a way of making you feel like you are in the same room with him. He seems to be talking directly to the individual student. What a great teacher and great drummer.

Back in the early 2000s I was at a lesson with the great Joe Morello in NJ and Danny stopped by early to meet up with Joe for a visit. We both were in the waiting room warming up on practice pads and chatting! So cool...Well half way through my lesson Danny asked us if he could hang with us in the lesson room and watch! He gave some wonderful insight during the lesson weaved with Joe's. Afterwards the three of us went for dinner and talked for hours together. He loved Joe for sure. Thanks Danny! Steveo

I grew up during an exciting period for music in New York, the early 1980s. Danny lived here in New York and was very often playing in very small incredible music venues, sometimes the size of an average living room. Let me tell you, catching this guy up close and personal doing his thing is something you never forget. Plus, he’s a sweetheart, always took time to offer some advice or encouragement to young players, always positive.

I'm so thankful I took lessons from Danny back in the 90's. Changed many things about my approach to the instrument. I still have the exercises he wrote out for me and have passed them on to others. The two paradiddle exercise is great for up-tempo stuff (didn't show me that one!), but I use a triplet exercise to get young students used to just playing a slow-medium tempo spang-a-lang with basic comping in the left hand. It's eighth note triplets that are sticked RLL RLR RLL RLR, etc. Practice that on the snare drum accenting the R's and ghosting the L's. Then transfer the right hand to the ride and play the pattern. Hey...it's a start!

Danny, I have loved your playing for so long. Saw you with Pat M. in 76 or77 in Gainesville Fla. Y'all were touring on the 1rst album I think. Never forget it. Harold Jones was a big influence on me for the Switch in Time Basie chart I played in high school jazz band. Quarter notes on the ride? HH chick on 2, cross styk on 4. So simple yet so swingin. Hope all is well. William

I used the Harold Jones ride cymbal pattern in 1996/97 when I was playing w the Basie band after studying the records w/Harold. I always thought it opened up the sound of the rhythm section. When you are playing 380bpm on jumpin' at the woodside, it really helped to reinforce the quarter note feel w/the bass and guitar. Nice video Danny!

I studied with Joe in the same store in early seventies - 1972-1977. He also taught from Jim Chaplin's book as well as from Stone's Stick Control. He used charge $20/HR but he did not charge me anything. We become good friends. There was a guy - Steve Foster who not only studied with him but also used to help him with some of his daily affairs because Joe had a poor eyesight.
