Garey Williams teaches how to use a: push-pull , throw-catch or open-closed technique (All are the same technique but described differently) to play a double and triple bounce stroke on the Ride Cymbal. Garey explains and demonstrates the wrist, fulcrum, finger techniques used to develop this bounce stroke. Garey is playing on a Paiste 22" Masters Series Dark Crash Ride cymbal with an Innovative Percussion Legacy Maple 7A Drumstick.

In spite of how simple his explanation is of the movement, I'm discovering that it's difficult to actually do it after so many years of just relying on using my wrists for playing. I'm looking forward to that breakthrough moment where it finally clicks.

This is most definitely an aid to my learning at home method. I've been playing since 2009 but was just an indie rock drummer. Hit hard and keep tempo. As of 1 month ago i've been really hellbent on actually learning to play. Learning rudiments and such. I love jazz and figured jazz is the true path to mastery of the kit. You're the best. Picked up this technique fairly quick.

Many thanks for a very useful video! I have been practicing this, and I do not manage to avoid the stick from moving up and down, and I thus lose the balance point and the rebound. Would you have any tips on how to avoid this from happening?
@DrumsetArtistry
@DrumsetArtistry 3 года назад
Try angling your cymbal more to see if that could help. You are holding the stick a tad to loose. I can help you best in a private lesson.

Thanks for this lesson. I use a different motion: open-close then a tap. It works, but do you think there is a risk of injuries by doing this tap at the end ?

I notice at 4:07 you was switching the fulcrum from index to middle. Why did you do that?
@DrumsetArtistry
@DrumsetArtistry 3 года назад
I use a shifting fulcrum approach. Middle finger fulcrum for slow to medium up tempos. Front hand fulcrum for faster tempos.
@sanderberkvens6270
@sanderberkvens6270 4 года назад
Awesome!!
@alesanchez8492
@alesanchez8492 4 года назад
you seem to be using your index finger as the fulcrum. won’t this increase your chance of getting tendinitis? as opposed to using your middle
@DrumsetArtistry
@DrumsetArtistry 4 года назад
No. The opposite would occur if I didn't use my index finger for fast bounced strokes.

@sergeyn2214

When you show open-close without stick, you open all 4 fingers. But when you play, you open only 3 fingers. And keep stick between index and thumb fingers
@DrumsetArtistry
@DrumsetArtistry 3 года назад
Good eyes. It makes the point more obvious to the viewer the concept of opening an closing your hand so that you do it as much as you can when you place the stick in your hand.
