Progressive Drumming Masterclass - jaypostones-dr...
Let me start by letting you know that you're not the first person who needs help with their practice routine.
It's super common to feel stuck without a good routine and most drummers I speak to are struggling with theirs.
Fortunately, I have some great methods to help you set in place an effective practice routine. Three important steps to put in place are:
1. Do not create overwhelm - set realistic goals.
2. Remove obstacles from your schedule that might prevent you from practicing.
3. Make the process of practicing fun and rewarding.
The next thing is to identify exactly what to practice. For my drum students, I help them remove the guesswork from this process entirely.
For example, are you practicing with intention (learning something for a specific reason, such as a live performance or recording) or are you trying to improve a new pattern or rudiment? Perhaps you want to identify new ideas organically within your own playing (this is where I get most of my ideas these days).
These are very different types of practice, and I offer my insight and process with each of them within the very first lesson of my Progressive Drumming Masterclass - so that you're set up and ready to go.
The second lesson in Module 1 of the Masterclass covers setting up an effective practice routine and how to stick to it.
I'd love to speak to you in more detail about this if you're open to learning.
If so, please check out the information at the link below, and book a call with me at your convenience to get started: jaypostones-dr...

At first, I was disappointed that there wasn’t any actual drumming in this video. This ended up being incredibly insightful and I really appreciate your honest take on routines. Thank you, Jay!

Thx for this valuable info Jay. I first stumped into your drumming career and content when i saw my teacher performing nocturne. The first 2 advices were really beneficial as i always overthink and overwhelm myself when achieving such goals as if im forcing myself to become the best drummer overnight while comparing myself to other drummers. I have several obstacles but through this videos you helped me to remove these distractions. Thank You.

Organic practice is the bomb! Glad to hear I'm not the only one leaning on this. My teacher of many years focused on rudiments almost entirely and over that time I collected kilograms of hand written exercises. In hindsight it seems like a "brute force" approach to unlocking flexibility. Later I joined a band and we've spent the last four years investing entirely into our ability to jam together and recording audio of the entire process. There are around 1500 recordings as a result, most of them are original (and rubbish) but there are some gems. Stalking your Spotify playlists at the moment to see what you jam to and I see Pisces by Jinjer in stuff you want to learn... Did you know they released the "Live Session" version with the enhanced drums on Spotify? Long message but hey, thanks for what you do and I'll eagerly await the next time you're in Brisbane Aus. You guys KILLED The Zoo! Being in the mosh for Acceptance towards the end of the set is a memory I'll always cherish. You're a true inspiration 🙏

I've never focused exclusively on rudiments. I've certainly never sat down with a music book - I find that approach to be way too broad and vague. Instead, I slow down ideas and figure out specific sticking patterns that I need to learn in order to play the song efficiently - and then just learn those. Doing this cuts to the chase, teaches a specific new skill for a specific reason, is immediately used in a musical sense rather than just as a rudiment on a pad, and tends to become a recallable pattern in my expanding drummer vocabulary after not too long. Win :)
