I don’t play drums, so this is extremely confusing to understand. It would be much easier to follow if you included the the real time hits alongside the rhythm. Also instead of describing where the snare goes, you could include a longer series of text indicating the position of the snare in the sequence. Since you said dynamics are key, maybe indicate that on the hits as well with >.
This is how I explain Tool riffs on guitar when people get hung up on the exact time signature or the exact way it is counted. "You need to feel it, not count it, keep playing, it'll make sense." I'm showing them tablature with timing, focusing on the patterns.
You and Mark Heron (Oceansize) are probably my favourite drummers of all time. As a guitarist that records at home, I alternate between the two of you for my midi drum writing inspirations.
Haha, so true 😂 - I felt the impulse to let people know this was a single unedited take as 99.9% of drums for heavier music these days is either programmed or edited to the grid. There’s nothing wrong in doing this for production reasons, but it seems kinda rare to show a human performance these days for this kinda stuff
