I would say he is more trying to prevent the flammes from extinguishing by doing slower movements. You can see it also on the snare, he hit it so little
He is not playing softer, for the fire to burn his sticks are wrapped with foam soaked in flamable fluid, that foam is dampening the symbal sound. Matt never gets exhausted.
