No shame. The love is definitely shared. Faith No More, & Mr. Bungle completely redefined my notion of music, & art. Believe it or not Mr. Bungle was my gateway to Faith No More. I remember the day my friend brought over the self title Mr. Bungle. It was like a new universe of possibility opened up to me. Blew my mind. First time I got to see Patton live was with early Fantomas. They played House of Blues in New Orleans easily over a decade ago. My friend, & I got to the venue early that day. The same friend that first introduced me to Mr. Bungle. We were walking up to the venue, and spotted Mike hanging outside on the phone. He’d just hung up so we decided to introduced ourselves. Asked if he had a moment, & ended up talking for what felt like half an hour. It was the most wonderfully normal conversation. Just the three of us nerding out about music we love. I can’t explain how awesome it felt to just be shooting the breeze with my at the time musical Hero. After a while I believe Buz, or Dave called him in for mic check. As Mike said bye, and walked inside. Trevor walk out to grab some cables. He saw that we were just chilling with Mike, so he stopped to say hello. Ended up hanging with him for a good 10 minutes before we all had to make our way inside. That experience meant more to my friend, & I than they could have ever imagined. My folks were both professional musicians so I’d meet my share of famous individuals before them. This meeting was far different. We’d idolized these guys for years prior. Listened to everything they’d ever put out, and dug into the artist that influenced them as well. To me Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, Trey Spruance, & Danny Heifetz were the greatest musicians on planet earth. I’d never been so nervous in my life, Mike, & Trevor treated us as complete equals. Not as fans, but as the fellow musical nerds we were. One of the coolest days of my teenage years. A decade + later my friend who now lived in NYC as a musician posted a show flyer on his webpage. He was scheduled to preform at John Zorn’s venue The Stone. Flashback to the conversation he, & I had with Mike Patton all those years ago. The topic of discussion that kicked off our nerd fest was a recently opened venue owned by John Zorn - The Stone.

I saw Mike Bordin play with Ozzy and Sabbath at Ozzfest 1997. He brought a unique perspective to their material. Especially, his take on the Tommy Aldridge parts (who I love as well). At the time, I only knew Faith No More from their radio airplay but watching Bordin was simply awesome. The open-handed technique is so cool to witness and he was probably the first guy that I really noticed who played that way as well. Last comment I have is the tom grooves that you pointed out - I absolutely love those as well. They're underappreciated and I don't know why. I work those into my drum parts quite a bit but my bandmates don't seem to understand any beat/groove that doesn't include a hi-hat/cymbal on top.

It's funny hearing you talk about personal preferences and how they affect your playing. I'm a multi-intrumentalist and find I prefer different things with different instruments. I'm a hair bigger than you but I like my kit spread out so I can have my arms (and legs) stretched out instead of close and tight. I almost never like my elbows at a 90-degree or less. That being said, when I'm playing guitar or bass I like really low action and a more narrow nut (whether it's in a 5, 6, 7 or 8-string guitar/bass) despite the fact my fingers have a harder time fitting into chords. I don't mind an extended range, in fact I prefer a 26.5" on a guitar and a 36" on bass, but I don't like a wider nut like the ones found on a lot of PRS guitars and such. It's weird how we find these little things that only make sense to us. Stay safe everyone. Cheers.

@@JunkdrummerTV I understand, I was just trying to point out that the entire band wasn’t trash, and appreciate the review on Bordin. He sparked my interest in playing drums and Carey sealed the deal. There’s definitely Sabbath influence in FNM, but they definitely do everything with originality.

As a drummer I totally bit off of Mike Gordon from a young age. Like you said, they influenced so many musicians. From big time rockstar's. To local musicians.
