Both are brilliant albums, Real Thing is more of the outgoing album, and Angel Dust is very dark. Those will always be my favorite albums, with King For A Day being in a very close second.

I was 15 when this came out. I would ride my bike to school listening to my Walkman and FNM. This was the first music band that opened up my eyes. Angel Dust is my number 1 album of all time. When I saw Bill and Ted and when Jim Martin came out of the telephone booth. I stood up and cheered. I play my music at 47 still loud in my car. As a angry teen in the early 90s. FNM was part of my life. I would roam the burbs and vandalize cars and building while listening to FNM. I called off work during HS to race home and watch the premiere of Small victory on MTV.

A truly fantastic record from start to finish (the amount of solo headbanging i did in my room to 'Woodpeckers from Mars' in my teens!). And know I also know there is a beautiful human being that helped putting it together. The ability of music to speak to the soul of many and create communion is truly a gift of humankind to itself. The Morning After is an underrated masterpiece of a track. Can't believe you guys didn't do an in depth discussion of Zombie Eaters. The part where the growling bass kicks in is the real epic on this album. Back when power ballads were all the rage, that one was a monster. Long live The Real Thing and FNM. 🤘

Bought cassette of this on family vacation summer 1990. I remember listening to it in the dark, after everyone went to bed, when I was supposed to be asleep. Mind blowing... it really expanded my listening boundaries.

I'd agree with the expanding my listening boundaries thing, I'd go as far as saying Mike Patton's attitude to music in general was what opened me up to trying different styles. Watching FNM play Easy at a show blew my mind, a rock band playing easy listening? Patton and FNM are gods.

I was at a sleepover at a friends house and saw this in his dads collection. The album art grabbed me so I asked if we could put it on and was instantly hooked. My favorite album, from my favorite band with my favorite bass player. I listened to this album when I took my dog to get put down this year... I listened to it when my grandfather passed away almost two years ago. This album has gotten me through everything and was my motivation for learning how to play bass. I've been playing almost 30 years now and can't thank you enough for the care and energy that you put into this. All of your efforts and all of your talent during those sessions are still playing today. Thanks Matt.

Quite simply one of the greatest albums of all time. Angel Dust is arguably more influential, but The Real Thing is close to perfection.

Is it though? At the time Angel Dust wasn't as regarded as it is today, & a lot of people thought it was a bit of a let down from The Real Thing. It also took them a long time to release it. I think TRT is '88 & Angel Dust was 93, after grunge had exploded on the scene. The Real Thing was so radically different than anything before it, that it inspired a lot of musicians to be. Genre smashing had never been done quite like that & suddenly everyone could see all the possibilities. Although tbf, you did say "arguably" so this is my argue against that take, lol, -Cheers!

@@JeighNeither I'm gonna have to say as someone who lived through that era that, yeah Angel Dust was massively well regarded when it came out, from critics to so many bands of that era. The fact that the buying public didn't buy it as mush as TRT, means they missed the point, and TRT sales were based on casual rock fans, which have always been mercurial, but among those in the hard rock/metal community, it was and still is a huge deal of an album.

Matt Wallace had no part in producing King for a day. It was Andy Wallace, who at the time was producing bands like Slayer, Sepultura and White Zombie. It's the only album of FNM that Matt Wallace didn't produce and that's why it sounds so much slicker than any other FNM album. Still a great album!!!

This album got literally stuck in my car's cassette player one summer right after it had dropped, so it's basically all me and my girl listened to for months on end. I became enamored with every track in one way or another, and as a musician I still hear them in the stuff that I write to this very day. I can't express the impact that TRT had on me back then, and it still sounds fresh when I listen to it today. What an amazing achievement! Thank you for this vid, thank you Matt for your outstanding work, & THANK YOU FAITH NO MORE for being the soundtrack to a great chunk of my youth. Cheers!

Absolutely one of the most influential and ultimately formative records of my life. It definitely shaped and changed the way I listened to music from that day forward. I can remember the first time I heard it like it was yesterday. My only criticism of this is that they didn’t cover every song.

Same, I had the exact same reaction & at age 13 it changed my entire musical trajectory. Before there was hair rock, with splashes of alternative brilliance from bands like Janes Addiction & heavy stuff like Metallica, but after this album it was like a door into the right timeline opened & we all walked thru.

Thank you so much to Gibson TV and Matt Wallace for doing this. You made my day with this video! I’ve watched it twice already. Faith No More were my Beatles and their music changed my life in 1990 when I bought this on cassette. I immediately saved up for a CD player just to listen to this album and Introduce Yourself. Matt Wallace seems like the kindest, most humble human being for someone who has accomplished so much. It was especially great learning more about him and his techniques. The Real Thing remains perfect to this day. The drums sound huge while the vocals and guitars sound in your face. It’s the perfect hybrid of late eighties and what became the early nineties style of production. I still can’t believe Mike Patton was 20-21 when he wrote the lyrics to these songs. Apologies for the long comment, I’m just so happy.

Based on Matt's comments about "The Real Thing" track, I think Patton is a largely underrated lyricist. Most can agree he's an excellent and diverse vocalist, but, as he put it, his ability to detail the "human condition" largely goes unrecognized. As a DJ in college radio during this era, bands like FNM, Primus, Limbomaniacs, Fungo Mungo, etc. (several of whom I got to interview) were mainstays of my radio show. This was really fantastic. Thanks!

my first introduction to Faith No More was them opening on the Justice for All Metallica tour. I honestly didn’t give them a chance since I had just gotten into metal and Metallica was my favorite band. A few days after seeing that show a friend of mine who was with me at the show puts The Real Thing on in his car. I immediately was drawn to it. He made sure to not tell me who it was until he was sure I liked it. So confusing and so awesome. Been a huge fan ever since

It’s such an amazing sounding record. It’s big, bold and very present on the top end. One of the greatest snare and guitar sounds ever for a rock record. But you can’t date it to ‘89 like so many of the hair metal recordings from then. A true instance of capturing the sound of a band instead of mostly capturing the time the band was doing it.

Fantastic album. My personal favorite, which I'm sure is the same for many is Angel Dust. But, The Real Thing always has a special place in my heart. So many good memories. this album created the 90s for me. not 1 rock album since is as good as The Real Thing. yes, there was a boatload of incredible stuff in the 90s, but IMHO the 90s would have never got there without this.

I was in my second year of high school when Epic came out, and it hit me at just the right spot! I was(and still am) a big Van Halen, Def Leppard, Rush, Metallica and Epic' combination of heaviness, pop and progressiveness in it musicality just hit me hard. I was singing those songs in my head all the damn time in that era! And I know Jim Martin was never part of the core of the band, but FNM has never been the same without him, and the classic Sabbath/Metallica metal style songwriting and guitar playing he brought and had to fight to get into the songs at times.

Meh, I think The Real Thing has been more influential, especially to musicians. The entire musical landscape changed after this record, because people heard what was actually possible when you smashed genres. Angel Dust wasn't nearly as respected when it released 5 years after this record, as it is today.

@@JeighNeither I remember when both Real Thing and Angel Dust came out....and The Real Thing absolutely put FNM at the forefront of "Bands to keep an eye on because they are going to take over" I distinctly recall Angel Dust coming out and confusing a LOT of people...who essentially wanted Real Thing Part 2. In many ways the fans who simply wanted another "Epic" jumped ship and those of us who were totally on board for how immense and insane Angel Dust is...embraced it fully. The more radio geared fans were left scratching their heads but I also recall a lot of new fans who love more outsider music really came around and started to see how great FNM are. You're right though...Angel Dust has been one of those albums that seems to have picked up a lot more interest as yesrs go by...because honestly.....can you name another album that sounds like it?! I have a massive music collection and I have a lot of pretty bizarre albums...but Angel Dust....is....well......its just Angel Dust and its amazing.

@@JeighNeither Angel Dust was released 3 years after The Real Thing, not 5 - and that was only because The Real Thing took so long to take off. The Real Thing was the huge beast on a commercial level for sure but Angel Dust was way more critically acclaimed artistically and has aged a lot better. Angel Dust was the album the band wanted to make.

Great story! The Real Thing has definitely stood the test of time. I had it on cassette as a pre teen. The tape was blue. I'll never forget it!

Thanks Matt. The Morning After has always been up there for me. That drum/bass intro is perfection and kicks so hard. First track i play when buying new kit as my ears know it soooo well.

One of my all time favourite albums. To hear the passion, drive & effort that went into creating this masterpiece which was a huge inspiration in my life is exactly how I hoped it was. It was new, we had never heard anything like it & changed the music scene for ever. So many bands swear by it. Every time I listen to it, it takes me back to my early teens & great times.

Awesome interview. From Out of Nowhere is my FAVORITE song of all time. I'm surprised that it's Matt Wallace's least favorite on the album, but to each their own. An extremely amazing album for sure, but , in my opinion Angeldust is a MASTERPIECE.

Faith no more, that album was that one in a million bands/albums that you listen to, but it's like listening to 10 different styles/genre's of great music. All in one package deal. It changed how I thought about music. At the time I played in local bands, bars and clubs every weekend. I never had any illusion of fame or anything, it was just fun. The most fun of my life. That album made me rethink everything about how I played and how our band played. Great video

What incredible work Wallace did on this record, one of my very favorites of the era and probably one of the best-sounding rock records ever. I admit I was a little surprised to hear his criticism of "From Out of Nowhere" - what he singles out as a fault is probably what made my hair stand on end and immediately push this band to the forefront of my attention. It's the patience, in a song with such urgent energy and immediacy, to hold back that soaring chorus (post-chorus?) until well into the song, and then to unleash it fully only at the end - and then to snatch it away again, leaving the listener wanting more. To me, delivering it all upfront would have made it sound more formulaic - as it was on record, it instead stood way out from the pack and made me rush to buy the album to find out more. It's a credit to Wallace that he supported the band's vision on the song structure (and of course, made it sound so incredible). This listener agrees with his lightning-in-a-bottle assessment - every member of the band was astoundingly on the money throughout.

I remember being a big metal fan when I was younger and my family was really big into rap, would not want anything to do with metal. I was looking for something different and that's how FNM was announced on Headbanger's Ball. I immediately jumped on the album when it was released and I loved it. Man, I thought Patton was so cool in the Epic video. I have been a fan of them and almost all of their side projects.

The Real Thing changed everything for me musically. I could not understand why I liked that album so much. I didn't realize at the time how incredible it was and still is today. Faith no more taught me a lot about music. This why I say Faith no more is my absolute favorite band.

This album was a huge part of my early teen years. Growing up in a family full of audiophiles from my grandparents to my parents to me and now with my children music is and always will be an important part of life and when I first heard this album upon it's release I was blown away with the quality. Put this album on through a good set of studio quality headphones and enjoy.

This record is definitely one of the most forward thinking releases. Words cant describe how FNM changed the way I view and produce music these days. In fact, I use some of Patton's adlibs in my music. It's just so perfect. Thank you so much for this fantastic interview/doc. This is everything to me.
