Hi guys. This one broke me. Really difficult song to analyze in one take on a second (if you count the actual track reaction) listen. Far too many time sig changes and very note dense. Can't wait to transcribe some Neil and attempt a cover when I get some time. So yes... disclaimer. I realize this isn't an exhaustive breakdown of the song. Hope you dig it regardless! I love that he broke your brain. What is cool is that in their final tour they played the anthology in reverse and ended with their earliest stuff and he reverted to his old kit as the show progressed. INteresting note is that "Tom Sawyer" was one of his most difficult drum parts due to the physicality of how he played it. There are some cool documentary pieces where he explains this difficulty.

This is a typical Rush song that trying to dissect in just one listen is like going to a Calculus equation to solve with just a basic math foundation to work with. There is so much and takes multiple listens to see both the genius in what they are doing and just how much is put into the song

Neil Peart's prodigious talent was rivaled only by his prodigious humanity and equanimity. His body of work - music, lyrics, books, interviews - are the measure of a life well lived, for which he justifiably holds our love and respect. And yes, I am paraphrasing his lyrics from "The Garden."

I started playing the drums back when I was seven years old and today I am 55.... I started playing the drums because of the inspiration that Neil Peart gave me when I was a young man... To me, there is no one that can touch Neil on any day of the week on a set of drums and in my own opinion he is the best drummer of all time and never will we find such a musician of his level and skill of timing or caliber ever again.

9:43 is another trademark Peart lick, that triplet hemiola down the toms. Please dig "Subdivisions." Not only some of Peart's most relatable lyrics - an outcast/weirdo anthem - but one of his most meticulously arranged drum parts. Rarely if ever did he hit all the high points of prog chops, head-bobbing groove, and radio-friendly accessibility in one track. It's made for radio, despite the fact that if you analyze it, you quickly realize that it is a Swiss watch of a song.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

I have found, the thing I learned most from listening to NP and The Boys for so long is phrasing. Where Neil starts his phrases and where he ends them. How to do a long fill and not get in the way, or call too much attention to myself, or step on the other player's parts. Where to fit, when to fit, and how to show off. Thanks, Neil! Great vid, Mr. Rooney! ❤🥁🤘

They have a way of organically playing odd time without it feeling like odd time. A lot of groups of 4 and 3 to make 7, amazing feel! Seamless!

That fill is an 8th note build up to a flam tom burst with a high hat punch followed by a descending flam tom fill in 6 or simply put, a triplet flam pattern down the toms. Then they go back into 4 to cue the guitar solo. Prior to the fill explosion it was simply a double ride pattern split between the high hat and the ride in 7/8. Neil uses the double ride pattern in a lot of songs, especially when they are grooving in 7/8. Subdivisions on Signals is a perfect example. Holla!

Hey Andrew, I appreciate your new interest in Rush, having grown up in the 70s Rush was a big part of Canadian culture…I’m a drummer and honestly my influences didn’t lean toward a drumming style like Peart, I was into drummers like Danny Sapherine, Steve Gadd, John Bonham, more free flowing styles…but now I still listen to classic Rush and I’ve learned a deeper respect for what Rush accomplished as a band, I remember when Permanent Waves came out, it blew me away!..especially Natural Science, I believe they were way ahead of the time, so thanks for your channel, I love your outlook on music and drumming!…all the best

I like the explanation you give around 5:15-5:45. There is actually a drumeo clip (about 5 cool things Neil does) which explains the whole playing the beat with the left hand then switching to doing the same with the right hand. The guy doing it totally breaks it down & then plays it sped up. Its so freaking cool. I am a non-drummer but sub-consciously I know neil is killing it even if i cant explain why and when someone informed & skilled pops up to demo it.. well thats a thing of beauty.

That right there @6:54 . . . was a "1979" moment, that I didn't discover till I bought the album in 1981 _after_ buying "Exit... Stage Left", "Signals", and then going backwards in their catalogue. Changed my life a 2nd time, the 1st; Kansas - "Point of Know Return" album in 1977, it started me on my Progressive Rock journey and realized at 14, what music could be. Natural Science & "Jacobs Ladder" are my fave deep cuts on this album next to "Freewill" being one of the singles, but Alex's solo in the track is my all time favorite (and what Geddy plays on bass, and the Professor goin' NUTS on the drums _during_ the solo!).

Listen to Mystic Rythms, there isn't any odd time but as the song builds, Neil adds more and more sounds. He utilizes his left foot to trigger an electronic clap sound. The end result is a very layered drum composition which is highly underrated . Rush has 150+ songs and RARELY does Neil " get in the way" of lyrics or overplayed. 1 of the greatest song composers , in my opinion. I enjoy watching Neil play these as much as anyone. But the thing that really astounds me is the work that went into creating these iconic drum performances. When you watch the entire Taking Center Stage (an entire concert of isolated drums), you realize how intricate each song is. I'm sure quite a few drummers could play this song perfectly. How many could play 25+ Rush songs in a row perfectly? Not many. How many could create those parts and replicate them every show? Only Neil. The under-appreciated thing about Neil are the subtle details that you might not notice until you've heard a songs dozens of times.

Neil's perfect timing and the flow he maintains through his fill-in sections can be taken for granted after DECADES of listening to Rush. A good analysis like this gives jaded listeners a fresh look. Rush neophytes should take a "deep dive" into Alex's guitar playing. Rush's monster bass & drum sound couldn't exist without Alex's style. Hypothetically, Alex would be the hardest member of Rush to replace. Mike Portnoy or Jeff Berlin could fill in for drums and bass, but you couldn't just take a stock hard rock or metal player like Zach Wilde or Joe Satriani or such to fill Alex's giant oversized clown shoes.

The most amazing thing for me, is that Neil doesn't play this song EXACTLY as he used to play on the record, but not because he's not capable of anymore... I think is the way he saw that the drum lines would fit better on this song, as he style of playing changed over the years! The fills are all there, in every live you seek! It's just incredible how he thinks and memorizes all of his drum lines

Fantastic break down as always Andrew and it’s awesome watching you react like we all did when first we herd it. Neil’s incredible power gets lost in the shuffle. I think ghost rider he would break a stick every time he played it.

I totally love how Rush would come out with an LP, go on tour & play their songs note for note live! In an interview one of them said that when they tried to cut some songs down they would end up taking more time vs just playing the whole song. Keep on rocking the Rush. I will suggest to you doing The Necromancer from Caress of Steel. Do the album version or maybe one with lyrics. There is no full, great live recording of it. I had really hoped they would have pulled it from the vault for their 40th anniversary tour, but sadly it's 1 song that I never got the chance to experience live. BTW, YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY!!!

@@AndrewRooneyDrums if you want to hear the Ping Ride, the best example I can think of is Neil playing Witch Hunt on the back Simmons electric/Tama hybrid kit. It lives up to its name. I bought my set of Sabians before the Paragons came out and got an AAX metal ride. Sounds a lot like the Ping, but the Ping is just a bit sweeter. Still the Sabian is amazing live (finally got to hear it from audience perspective when I provided them as backline for a charity gig). Cuts through absolutely anything. You's be hard pressed to find a Rush album without at least one song where Geddy and Neil don't lock in together, and not just on the bass drum. There's a bunch I can think of where Neil does a fill and Geddy mimics it on the bass.

For your personal entertainment. There is a DVD Neil Peart put out called A Work in Progress. He breaks down his equipment, and how he prepared and put his piece to the Rush puzzle together for the Album Test For Echo album. I say for your own entertainment, because as a drummer I think you'll find it informative. I love it, but it might not be enjoyable to some viewers. P.S. This was also when he went "back to school" to work on his technique with Freddy Gruber. Thanks again for your breakdown! Take care ✌

Funny, I'm not even a real drummer. I love the hell out of it, but I can't play for the life of me. The parts that are blowing this drummer's mind are already so ingrained in my head it's no big deal. I just think to myself, "Welcome to Neils world. Come join me. I've been here for the past 37 years."

may have already been said but would love to hear you analyze any song off of Test for Echo. Neil went "back to school" and took drum lessons and sort of revamped his own playing style. The results are obvious and very different, circular in nature. Thanks for doing these. I feel like a proud papa talking about his kids with a friend. :)

Your discussion of the left vs. right backbeat was fascinating for me, a guitarist (i.e. non-drummer). That's the kind of stuff that us amateurs don't understand whiteout your help. I seem to notice that he is double footing the bass drum more in this live track than in the studio version though.
